Poundland £5 PIR sensor LED tape

This product has three parts which could be used independently.  A USB to power jack cable, 2m of 5V LED tape that can be cut on every LED and a universal PIR sensor with jack in and out, that can operate between 5V and 24V.

The wide voltage range of the sensor and its adjustable time makes it worth the £5 pack cost alone.

Which makes the 5 to 24 volt input a bit odd don't you think? 24 volts and the supplied led strip would likely last seconds before burning out. Sorry I thought it included a regulator. Happy to ship the over heating one to you if of any interest? Merry christmas and hope you have a great time. Having a brother with an almost unlimited whiskey collection should make the festivities fun anyway ;) keep smiling and keep safe.

That's odd. I wonder what's shorting out. The 12V thing is definitely going to overdrive the LEDs as the unit is just a switch and not a regulator. If you put 12V in you'll get 12V out.

I bought 2 of these sets from poundland both faulty in different ways. One instantly and continuously draws a lot of current and gets finger burning hot in seconds. The other kind of works but whatever the input voltage is so is the output voltage! The lights are quite bright at 12 volts! Do you want both sensors for autopsy?

Most of the led tape I've ever used comes on reels which resemble 1/4" open-reel tape spools except the plastic they are formed from is very soft and floppy - presumably made as cheaply as possible. Might be interesting to try it out though...

Most of the LED tape comes on that style of spool these days. I'd guess they may be the same ones for surface mount component tape too.

Big Clive

Am I seeing things, or is that a magnetic tape spool for small reel to reel machines that has found a new purpose ?

Most enjoyable! I like how the parts are so usable. Interesting stuff

Canada and Australia have some lame import laws too 😭

Heres the PIR module on LCSC for $1.1/ea https://lcsc.com/product-detail/Infrared-Sensors_Senba-Sensing-Tech-BS612_C389589.html

It passes current continuously via the inherent MOSFET diode. The circuitry still sees the same polarity. Swapping it back restores normal operation.

Big Clive

Yes. The unit switches the input to the output.

Big Clive

Is there anything to prevent you plugging the power into the output, and would that cause damage if you did?

Tapewolf

I can see what was provided working with the 5V input. You don't say but I presume if you use a higher input of say 24V you will require a different lighting strip so as not to risk burning out the LED strip provided?

That thing is quite good value....we have nothing of the sort at my local dollar store, but us Canadians usually get the shaft on value for money

Simple Electronics

Looking forward to this!
