The 110V version is VERY different

Having de-potted the 220-240V version of this odd Chinese fridge/store air sanitizer (a low level ozone generator) I decided to get one of the 110V versions and de-pot it too.

Very different circuitry to accommodate the lower voltage.

Technically speaking it could have been used for the 220V version too, but I guess the miniature voltage multiplier may have had cost benefits versus the transformer, high voltage diodes and high voltage capacitors in this version.

You never cease to amaze me with the clarity with which you explain the reverse engineering, such that it is easy to understand. Another top quality video and really enjoyable to watch. Cheers Clive and all the best for the New Year.

Mike Hughes

Wow that is a different animal entirely!

I think I'm a convert to the carbon fibre emitters. They seem very efficient.

Clive I used very fine insulin needles to make my ironiser. Clamped between two bits of thin copper. If you want some for a project I have NEW SEALED ones I can post.

Nuts 'n' Proud

very different builds would never guess, my guess might have included a buck type regulator in one if not both. Built to a very tight part and cost BOM

DC Allan

I think these units are all cost optimised to use the minimum required to achieve the result.

Big Clive

If using that, the negative lead MUST be connected to mains ground. If you don't it will create such a high voltage between the 12V power supply output and ground that it may arc over internally and compromise the isolation between high and low voltage sides.

Big Clive

I was going to ask if you thought the circuit dirrerence was because of the cost of the transformer. I was quite chuffed with myself that I got it right. Electronics not really being my field.

Dr Andy Hill

I should have said before, Clive, that your persistence certainly does pay off, and we're grateful for it. I would have zapped that thing to death in frustration several times over!

Electronic Gold Mine sells a 12 volt to 12kv negative ionizer module. I have gotten a few of them and they are pretty good, you can feel the ionic wind from them. https://www.goldmine-elec-products.com/prodinfo.asp?number=C9007

I ordered two of the 110V version. Both have longer fibers on the black lead. I think it's just random.

Bill Kerr

Technically speaking, I suppose a single electrode neon tube could be called a monode.

Big Clive

Yep, the 110V version I got was way more potting than the 240V you did originally.

You've got me wondering about the term diode - obviously based on 2, so triodes, tetrodes and pentodes are equally obvious, but is there a monode or would that be anodes and cathodes, and how about sexodes and so on? Or is a sexode something to whisper in your lover's ear?
