Secret mid-week stream

Kinda short notice at about 21 hours before the event, but I'll be doing a quiet Patreon stream.

https://youtu.be/qwa2voxAKNM

Let me know if you have any subjects or questions you want answered in the stream.

Secret mid-week stream

Everyone will eventually get it. This is inevitable. But what is not inevitable is a 2-3% fatality rate. Be happy most countries are doing better than the USA. Though that bar is pitifully low

Cerity

Return residents from Britain/South Africa in quarantine and some missed protocols with cleaners. Bunch of people in the quarantined hotels have it so it’s not hard to imagine that it was going to get into the community at some point and eventually will.

Highly appreciated for the stream

There's another stream on Saturday.

Big Clive

I wonder how it managed to get to Oz.

Big Clive

Damn, we went into lockdown today - the UK variant of Covid has been detected in Brisbane Aus. Missed the stream with all the mucking about here. Clive, do you want to see a short video of my candle Christmas lights using your 3D models, on the tree?

Rob Googe

No. That's rocket science.

Big Clive

I've not had a look at them yet. They're in the long queue for a video.

Big Clive

The power supply will be maintaining the stated voltage by pulsing on and off, resulting in an audible tone at the pulse width modulation frequency. It should be OK. If you add an external smoothing capacitor it may help tone it down a bit.

Big Clive

It would need a separate power supply for the fans.

Big Clive

I think there are lights with modules where the RGB changing is done on board. But I've never seen them loose.

Big Clive

No. Not even when you hide your number.

Big Clive

They would be able to control the situation by handing out free candy and LED flashlights.

Big Clive

I just wanted to kick the doors in. I'm not sure what the other people were there for.

Big Clive

Aaargh, I've missed it! Currently locked down here with my mum (92) as part of our family to make managing her needs easier (she normally lives independently about 40 miles away and we visit weekly / twice weekly). Anyway she loves Scrabble and we had an extra game tonight (and I had extra (non Radium) G&Ts ) and clean missed my 9pm reminder! Sorry, meant to be there, I'll get it on catch up.

What year did you start doing the edinburgh tattoo ?

Hi Clive! I’m installing some led tape into my Fl Sun q5, should I add a separate 24v supply or could I tap off the internal PS?

Lee Goodair

A year or so ago, you reviewed some LED spotlights. I've got a pair of the Blue one, and I'm thinking to convert it to RGB color shifting. But, all the Luxeon/Cree/Etc I can find have power to each color, the color shifting is done external. Do you know of a version where the LED includes the shifter local?

Am I allowed to phone you up?

Basti Elektronik

If all of your BCDC supporters had a meet and greet at the US Capital on a dark and stormy night, what unique skillsets should the authorities employ to quell the BC mania?

Jim

Further to our discussion on the Lodine lights, I have been thinking about various cooling solutions; Mainly using some PC fans and/or heat syncs to target the chips. My question for that would be a safe way to wire in a generic-y PC fan to the light unit. Or, if powering the fans from a rechargeable battery pack would be a simpler solution. Thanks again for the advice already.

Jesse_Fish_45

I heard Clive was one of the very first people to storm the US capitol last night. But not for any political reason, he just heard there was a small supply of uranium gin hidden there.

FWIW I recently ordered one for exactly the same purpose, heat shrink and melting stuff - the cheapest one I could find on Ali, a "lefavor 858D". Before that I have been contemplating buying the handle alone (silly cheap) and trying to build the driver unit myself, but in the end I didn't bother. i think they all come with exactly the same handle with exactly the same heating element and thermocouple, so there is not really much of a difference. I would only avoid the ones that look like a laptop power brick, as they seem to be a pain to operate, and they don't have a stand (which automatically turns off the unit when you replace the handle).

horrovac

It is very fun, you get your messages read more often than in the main streams aha.

I've just recently became a patron and I'm very excited for it!

If it’s too obscure etc - I fully understand !!! I doubt most people would be interested in it

Hi Clive this may be a bit niche but it’s definitely technical and I’ll admit beyond me. I’ve been given and old ( very old) gen set it’s 3 phase but the generator is delta wound with only 3 taps ( the phases) coming out from the windings and the 3 brushes contacts disappearing into them. No nameplate AVR or anything ( and definitely no access to the individual coils). It’s a “farm special” so no protective devises at all !! The IR etc checked out and with an old 3 phase board, I’ve got a fairly stable 390v between all phases, frequency etc a bit variable but that’s engine related. My question is I have vague recollections when at Uni a long time ago of an external artificial star point arrangement using a resistor network. Any ideas / experience of that as only could find it for a given stable load ? It’s the neutral I’m after, at present I can think of a transformer etc but it’s a costly solution !

RDM

Oof. Best get a pair on order, to avoid needing to wait next time.

NightshadeLenar

You do need to check them - some produced the nominal voltage only when loaded down by the appliance they were meant for ( and were typically unregulated ) others are ac. There is a slim chance of a faulty one but they generally were very reliable.

RDM

Not sure I can make it after yesterday's insurrection. I still haven't slept.

Rocco Rizzo

I can't remember if this has been asked already... Can you explain how a microwave magnetron works?

Wim

My Hard Drive is on the blink, so I'll be sitting this and possibly Saturday out too.

Andrew Donaldson

I pulled out some old Power supplies (UK 3 pin 'Transformer Block" type with a twin core cable out ending in 3.5mm jack) to plug into those nice low cost Breadboard power supply / voltage regulators that take 7-12V in and drop it down to 3.3 - 5V. This was to allow some LED lights to be mains driven over Christmas. I fried one one of the breadboard power supplies when I plugged in a stated 12V power supply to the mains only to discover it was bashing out 20V ! Another one rated for 9V is pushing out 16V ! What would cause this? Age?, some internal component failing? I did find others that worked fine, but will be testing all mains connected low voltage power supplies from now on!

Have you had a chance to look at those Auto power off devices I sent with the Soldering frame? Just about to re-wire my workshop so would be interested to know if there's a way to modify the auto on/off timings... No worries if you have more pressing things to do just asking. Happy new year by the way!

Whippet Gas

Great! Got today and tomorrow off then working on Saturday and will miss the first hour of the Saturday stream. Always nice to be on time. Product question: In the market for a relatively small heat gun similar to your Yihua you've featured before but I don't need (another) soldering station. Any recommendations? Usage is mostly occasional for heat shrink and the like.

Not sure if this is a valid question: I'm powering a ~26W LED strip with a little 12V switch mode power supply and controlling it via PWM from an arduino. The power supply makes quite strange buzzing sounds though.. what exactly is happening there and does using a cheap power supply like that affect the life expectancy? (sorry if this is a bit basic, still a complete noob)

Martin

Will try and join for an hour. How's the IoM lockdown going?

Mark Gray

I'm off work Friday so the timing is perfect.

Best & Worse repurposable/hackable/usable products from Poundland, for those of us in other countries with similar stores?

Hugo Dahl

You mentioned the adjusted power Poundland lamp in your porch; are there any other wizzes you've installed recently, either at yours or for your neighbours?

Ymir the Frost Giant

Perhaps talk about the possibilities of making a supercomputer into a matrix display, you could play Tetris on one lol.

Clive - Thursday is my internet DJ show night. I'll pop in for the first hour. Please pick a normal radio tune I can play for you. If it's really modern it will be the first on and I will plug your channel :D

Nuts 'n' Proud

Yep, I was hoping you'd do one. :)

Will there be drinks? BigCliveMixology live stream :-)

Super cool! Well needed

So say the sane of us

Michael Thompson

Lovely! My question is How widespread is FM radio in the UK and do you like tube radios?

Basti Elektronik

On behalf of all the sane citizens, and residents, of the United States of America I apologize for our dear leader and his citrus hair. That is all I have tonight. We're a little distracted on this side of the puddle

Ryan Coleman

any ideas about what to do with old power and charging packs off computers , phones . tools etc..... perhaps a short vid on converting a laptop power supply into say a general purpose 12v or whatever you need to drive

John Catterall

Can I suggest mosfet vs. transistors. The pros and cons of each and what applications are better for each?

AWESOME! love the chill streams :^)
