patreon

Patreon-themed phishing emails.

Just to let you guys 'n' gals know, that just like every other service, there are the usual fake "updated terms and conditions" type phishing emails from a completely random address being presented as being from Patreon.

I know you're all savvy enough to spot stuff like that, but I just thought I'd mention it anyway.

Wait so it wasn't patreon who I gave my bank details, Photos of my driving licence. Mothers maiden name and my ni number to?

It's a sad world we live in, and pass on to our successors. Took my chevy to the levee but it was sucked dry.

Ymir the Frost Giant

That's definitely been happening. Especially targeting those who have been out of work as a result of Covid, which is horrible. Instead of negotiating new ways to tax online activity it would be more useful to negotiate dealing globally with scammers.

Big Clive

They don't have any choice over things like that. I've removed most tiers from my Patreon to try and minimise American tax impact as much as possible. Supporters in Europe have been charged VAT as standard for a while. My location on the Isle of Man is a minefield as it's not quite the UK, but also attached to the UK. It's complex.

Big Clive

There's also seems to be a lot more spearphishing going on to lately. Scammers taking advantage of many working from home I guess.

Kadah

The only "surprise" I received from Patreon was the emailed statement that they may start charging tax on payments made based on location.

Any time I get a fake call at work I love pressing 1 and putting them on hold. It's the kind of hold that advertises to you so you know your robodial f'd up. I swear we get fewer calls because of that but management gets annoyed for "putting someone on hold who hangs up".

On a plus note it forced him to change all his passwords. Something that should be done every so often.

Big Clive

Thanks Clive I shall keep my eye out for the phishing

Ellis Garbutt

Funny enough I got my very first Nigerian spam today. Got loads of other spam but until today never Nigerian. Not sure if I should feel cheated or blessed🙄

Zeedijk Mike

Phishing - terrible business. If you give me all your credit card details I'll keep them safe from those nasty people ;)

Raven Luni

Emails - I look at the email headers to make sure. We had lots of cold callers when I was in the UK. A Truecall (NOT Truecaller) unit intercepts incoming calls and as if by magic the robocallers can't say their name and press the 5 key.

Nuts 'n' Proud

Glad you’re doing good 👍 that’s always fun the 🙈😁😭😂 emotional roller coaster

Cerity

hunter2 hunter2 Wait why isn't this working?

David K

The binoculars sound interesting. Lol

Simon Deards VK3FSPD

Thanks, Clive. BTW you turned up in a dream last night sporting a strange pair of foldable binoculars. Except they were two pairs fused, so quadoculars? It all seemed normal at the time. It's only been the once. I promise.

Mike Page

Use robokiller... or any of those apps. The usa authorized the FCC to enforce the rule for telcos to block spoofed numbers and indicate what’s a legitimate call on their networks

Cerity

Our youngest was expecting a Tax Rebate before Christmas and got caught out! Fortunately he lost no money, but it cost him an entire day off work to change all his passwords and account details, and as they say. Time is money!

Andrew Donaldson

Can't wait :)

Frank

Thanks for the heads up.

Gadgetman

So Patreon doesn’t actually have the inheritance from my estranged great uncle from The Ukraine? Starting to wonder if I should’ve held off on sending them 5 grand in Bitcoin....

The phone call scams are the worst for catching people out around here as I know a few elderly that fell victim. For the fake Amazon calls, I found the best way to deal with these is to press '1' to speak to an agent and place the phone in front of a radio. After getting daily calls, it's been a month since the last fake Amazon call after doing this a few times. 😄

Seán Byrne

Do you remember the old days when there was no spam, scams or even adverts on the 'net?

Big Clive

You Nigerian princes are all the same.

Big Clive

There is that. I usually do read terms and conditions changes on some sites just to make sure they're not going to do something terrible involving the Isle of Man.

Big Clive

Thanks Clive.

Simon Hopkins

Thanks for the heads up Clive, I recently made a schoolboy error and fell for an early morning text supposedly from paypal, as I had had a legitimate one of these before I just dived in, by the time I realised they were asking for too much information and the site I was on was actuall paypal.thebackofmyhead.pingpong.com. I had compromised my account plus 1 debit card / bank account. Thankfull I reacted quick enough to resecure my accounts, before being robbed. Won't fall for that again in a hurry. Make sure you are properly awake and dom't be an arse are the morals from this story!

Dr Andy Hill

Seems to be the day for it. My mum's had 4 fake phone calls from amazon today. It really grips my shi+

Simon Hopkins

I've had 2 of those "This is HMrC. There is a tax fraud case against your namE. Press.......1 now to talk to our agent or a warrant will be made under your name and you will be arressted immediately."

Thanks Clive, there are way too many scamming gits out there now.

Brendan Perkins

Next time please wait until I hook a few before you warn everyone 🧐

The Tinkering Shed

THIS IS CONFIRED BY VERIZON FBI AND MCDONALDS YOU SHARE WITH ALL YOU'RE COTACTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Steve Brace

But that prince needs his money so bad... oh I should follow up with that guy.

Michael Thompson

thank you, better safe than sorry :)

lImbus924

Sooooo..... I shouldn't go buy iTunes gift cards and send it to them? ;-)

Clive, Thanks for the heads up.

Jeff Larson

Joke's on them, I have no more money! I invested it all with a Nigerian prince and am simply waiting for the checks to come rolling in...

Adam McKnight

Too bad I did not win.

Frank

Seems strange. Who ever reads the T&C's anyway? Let alone an update of T&C's.

evilution

oh buy I won a BMW and $1.5 MILLION also n apple laptop. you fink it fake🤦‍♂️👌👍

DC Allan

so if i enter the long number on the front of my card, expiry date and security number on the back, i wont be entered into a competition to win £100... What a shame.

Jesse_Fish_45

Doesn’t say where to send my username & password. Instructions unclear 👎👎👎
