Questions for the stream
Added 2021-01-23 18:35:20 +0000 UTCAny questions for the usual Saturday live stream? If I didn't get to your question last week, you can ask it again.

If you look at the PCB in the end (be careful if you have to cut it free from the silicone blobs) then you'll see a couple of resistors in parallel next to the driver chip. Removing one can drop the intensity and heat a small amount or a large amount. I made a video about it:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hu6y-qZfZjY

2021-01-31 23:17:38 +0000 UTCFor the makita portable bench power supply i am putting together.
2021-01-30 21:36:52 +0000 UTCThoughts on what i can use as a low voltage shutoff for using a boost converter fed from 18v makita battery?
2021-01-30 21:35:34 +0000 UTCHi Clive, did you modify the buck converter in the V-TAC lights on your live bench? Mine get quite warm and I would like to drop the current.
2021-01-30 21:33:28 +0000 UTCStill watching the stream. Perhaps a ZOOM virtual meetup? That would be cool. perhaps with breakout rooms for different interests (like led christmas displays etc)

2021-01-24 06:45:09 +0000 UTCThe stream was great, Clive. That lamp that was running on ~500 uA -- unless I've done the math wrong, half that current was coming through the capacitor discharge resistor, and only half through the capacitor. Wow, that's efficient.
Charles
2021-01-24 02:22:37 +0000 UTCwhen things go back to normal would you consider having a meet up in central England so some of us further down could meet you
2021-01-23 22:26:33 +0000 UTCi forgot im a patreon lol
2021-01-23 22:23:15 +0000 UTCIf a series capacitor lowers the current to a light that uses a capacitive dropper, presumably a parallel capacitor would do the opposite? And if so, is there a daner from capacitve loads plugged in near lamps (or cheap chinese chargers etc)?

2021-01-23 22:00:50 +0000 UTCWith Glastonbury canceled for the second year running, do you think the Tattoo will be canceled to for a second year running?

2021-01-23 21:08:43 +0000 UTCA lot of libraries are diversifying into other more relevant (modern) and useful community activities that are still in the essence of what a library is. My local library has been handed over to a voluntary group which have kept it open and raised funds to repair it.

2021-01-23 20:56:46 +0000 UTCI see LED power suppliers are usually advertised as constant current or constant voltage - what are the relative advantages? This was prompted by your recent tear down where there was both a voltage and current limiter.
AlfaGuy
2021-01-23 20:55:57 +0000 UTCDo you read books very often and are library's just going to close or become book museums?
DC Allan
2021-01-23 20:53:08 +0000 UTCPersonal heater - you mean like putting a jumper on? Clive's not an expert in home heating.

2021-01-23 20:50:12 +0000 UTCCan we have a Jaegermunion toast to the late Mira Furlan who left us yesterday?

2021-01-23 20:47:39 +0000 UTCAny thoughts on the announcement of new EV battery technology, apparently can be charged in 5 mins - that's an awful lot of power to be transferred. Charging voltage would need to be high (1000s of V?) street reticulation and domestic (60/100 Amp) installations could not handle it, public charge points would need sub stations alongside!! Is it in anyway practical? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/technology-55652512

2021-01-23 20:32:12 +0000 UTCHave you seen Ave’s makita 18v portable power supply? Its broken now but i have always wondered if there was someone in the uk that makes them or if there is a 3D print file to make our own. Would be really handy for techs like me .
2021-01-23 20:28:51 +0000 UTCAn A/S/L (Age/Sex/Location) poll would be interesting and a bit of fun later in the evening when the booze has been flowing for a bit.

2021-01-23 20:25:57 +0000 UTCI have a capacitor discharge tool for you. It's called a metal screwdriver with a plastic handle. Hold the handle, being careful not to touch the metal, and discharge the cap by holding the metal part of the screwdriver over the cap's terminals.

2021-01-23 20:21:59 +0000 UTCConnectors are quite small to solder, especially when you have big hands!

2021-01-23 20:19:56 +0000 UTCAre we going to be able to watch you convert your garage to a workshop? And also what building suppliers do you have on the island? Screwfix/B&Q
2021-01-23 20:17:46 +0000 UTCAre there any remarkable large or small lighting instruments used in the tattoo?

2021-01-23 20:07:49 +0000 UTCJust saw a article about drones powered by hydrogen fuel cells that have flight times in hours. Interesting idea. As hydrogen is consumed the craft gets lighter compared to battery drones.

2021-01-23 19:51:49 +0000 UTCFyi. Your in pretty much the average age range for clive viewership believe it or not. Between 20s and late 40s most of us. 😉
2021-01-23 19:43:19 +0000 UTCAs a somewhat younger (well, 30, but I feel that might be young for your channel), what's the best way to get properly into electronics, schematics and the like? Just grab stuff and start taking them apart/reverse engineering stuff?
Elizabeth L
2021-01-23 19:38:12 +0000 UTCany chance you could discuss / do a quick construction video on a home made CAPACITOR Discharge tool * or tools

2021-01-23 19:27:40 +0000 UTCWhat is the least technical / nerdy / geeky thing that your interested in?
2021-01-23 19:24:19 +0000 UTCas long as the work planned is not too much for a small iron l bought the one Big Clive reviewed a while back and it is a handy goto iron........use a power pack tho not your pc usb socket or a mains driven usb adaptor
John Catterall
2021-01-23 19:19:46 +0000 UTCWhat is the benefit of using thantalum or ceramic caps? Just wondering...

2021-01-23 19:07:20 +0000 UTCAre there any new board designs in the works?? I am going to try to replace some 3 inch automotive lights with a board design of my own...1st time so we will see
2021-01-23 19:04:26 +0000 UTCWhat is a good paint for small incandescent Lamps??

2021-01-23 19:02:43 +0000 UTCUSB soldering irons - worth it? Particularly the dirt cheap ones. I had some soldering to do a few weeks ago and my mains powered soldering station felt s bit unweildy. I have some automotive soldering to do soon, wondering if it's worth holding off and getting one of these lighter, smaller ones on USB, or of I should just suck it up and run a mains extension to the car, and be very careful with the fat, heavy iron I have at the moment,...
Steven Raith
2021-01-23 19:00:47 +0000 UTCyou can buy/have fitted, mains wall sockets with additional usb plugs built in now.
Jesse_Fish_45
2021-01-23 18:56:40 +0000 UTCUm that’s quite dangerous
2021-01-23 18:55:06 +0000 UTCWould there be a benefit to building new houses with an additional 5V ring-main rather than using separate power supplies for everything USB?
Simon Pain
2021-01-23 18:54:44 +0000 UTCYou've reviewed a few other power monitoring plugs, notably the one with the fancy control chip, but you still favour the HOPI. Do you like it better ?
adrian
2021-01-23 18:54:05 +0000 UTCWhy do you hardwire USB cables and not use connectors?
Earl Plotner
2021-01-23 18:53:16 +0000 UTCI hope this hasn't been asked before (and I have missed it), but if you gained god like powers (in the sense laws/laws of physics/time and e irrelevant to yourself) what would you do with them?
2021-01-23 18:51:22 +0000 UTCHow do ignitors for discharge lamps work? I know they put out 2-5kV spike pulses (depending on the lamp type and condition) but what makes those pules in such a small package? Also what does the timing in the ones that shut off after a while to prevent cycling of end of life lamps?
2021-01-23 18:49:24 +0000 UTCHave you ever seen sodium acetate based heat packs before?
Elliott Krimchansky
2021-01-23 18:48:36 +0000 UTCI know you have mentioned a few different ways to do it, but, what is the most reliable way you have found to applying the photoresist gel and developing PCB's?
Joseph Rockhill
2021-01-23 18:45:19 +0000 UTCThere is a couple already done.
Neil Tonks
2021-01-23 18:43:37 +0000 UTCSecond question would be what is the biggest scare that you have had with electric products/ in general.
2021-01-23 18:41:31 +0000 UTCHi BG! My q would be, is there a safe way to use a microwave transformer as a spot welder, for 18650s for example, and if so how to go about it. Thanks!
Dannybuoy
2021-01-23 18:41:18 +0000 UTCNot a question, more of a suggestion, have you thought about doing a series on electronic and electric basics? So instead of tearing down equipment doing a bit on basic electronic and electrical parts, how they work and mesh together.
Jasmin Redzepagic
2021-01-23 18:41:18 +0000 UTCWhat are your feelings on personal space heaters to heat a person instead of heating a room? Sorry if I missed it last week, I have to switch off at around 11:25 your time.
