Exploring a faulty heating controller

Sorry - apparently I'm in heating component mode right now.  Normal service will resume shortly.

This is an attempt to locate the cause of a very common fault with these popular controllers.  It probably applies to many others too.  A notable moment in this video is probably the demonstration of how to detect excess ripple on a DC power rail.

I'll probably make a short and more specific video about fixing these in the future, that just gets straight to the fault and fix.

I'm just about to release the Dooby lamp video ahead of others, as the other Dubai lamp video has resulted in a lot of interest in lowering lamp current.

Exploring a faulty heating controller

I was thinking, if the rms voltage is 48v the peak to peak voltage is getting very close to running those smd capacitors at their voltage limit 🤔

Graham Eida

I often salvage components and keep them in a bag. But using second hand capacitors is tricky.

If parts if the screen flickered and became intermittent then that's a common problem too. You may be able to fix it by opening the unit, accessing the display and gently burnishing the edge strip on with a bit of heat to make the conductive glue stick again.

A kettle killed mine my dad visited and moved the kettle under the unit and the steam caused LCD screen to fail. The controller was the easiest and most common sense unit I have ever had. LANDIS GYR CHRONOGYR REV 10 Central heating (UK fitted 1993 - 2008) https://data.e-manual.eu/en/preview-manual-for-free-223041/central-heating-landis-gyr-chronogyr-rev-10/page-1.html I now use a NEST since 2015 3 bed semi, gas, radiators, combi boiler

Simple fixes like single blow fuses, are the reason for up to 40% of ewaste... consumerism doesn’t want to reuse. It wants to complete the cycle needlessly 😭

Cerity

A very useful tip for future fault finding- that's why we all love this Channel. Thanks Big Clive, yet again!!

I recon the dooby doo lights will be another hit

I just picked up a small dish washer that the past owner has the complaint of it not completing cycles and restarting. Hmm I know where I am going to look first. At the power supply of the controller. This is one of those dinky 50cm dish washers that are popular in tiny homes. And are not inexpensive.

Charles Bruckner

this was a good one

my company doesn't do these repairs well you nailed it

Michael Thompson

I've missed these kind of videos. Hope to see more

Dry capacitors are a fact of life these days.

Big Clive

Sometimes I do that to create intense moments.

Big Clive

I'm considering testing it with different dropper values to see what it can tolerate.

Big Clive

If it turns out to be the same model and problem then a 47uF 63V cap can be soldered to the two spare capacitor pads nearest the dropper cap, and laid up in the direction of the connection pins. It fits in OK. Leave the original caps in, they're very hard to remove without damaging tracks.

Big Clive

That's grim. Is it RCD protected? At that power without obvious burning I'd be suspicious that current has been flowing from live to ambient ground.

Big Clive

Darn, I didn't even think of the additional option of using 105C caps. I ended up repositioning that capacitor on the spare cap pads nearest the dropper cap, and laying it in the direction of the other caps pads. It fits in easily.

Big Clive

That's an interesting idea.

Big Clive

You really scared me when you were pointing at the board while it was still live!

Michael Dunn

Dry capacitors are almost as bad as dry Thanksgiving 🦃 🤣

Lostngone

Those capacitors were much closer to 560 than 680 - makes me wonder if theyre just buying a whole bunch of one value and selling it 2 categories because the next value up happens to be within the tolerance. As for the form factor issue, you could 3d print a new back for it (or just the bit you need after cutting it out of the original)

Raven Luni

Incredible - exactly the problem I've been having! Thankyou Clive.

I had a new boiler installed last week. They didn't replace my Honeywell controller. lets hope it lasts for a while longer. It's about 8 years old

Jeremy Travis

In the States we have a few line voltage thermostats but the majority/bulk of them are 24vAC with a sprinkling of battery powered models.

Yeah, that is a new one on me (I'm not an electrician of any stripe) but by gum that makes sense in my head!

Steven Raith

Interesting tip for measuring ripple. Awesome. 🤙🏻

After solving the recent drama we had with our central heating causing shocks in the downstairs shower, today I discovered why our electricity bill has gone mad. Two underground cables to a shed from the garage, one armoured and one not. The non armoured must be shorting somewhere as when it's energised there is a load of about 3kw! Shares in power ni will surely take a dive now..

Mark Chapman

Those caps have been difficult to order world wide. The handful of manufacturers not "in allocation" tend to be the ones who only sell direct to OEM.

neal richard

If some suppliers wont dilever to directly to you id be more than happy to re-send it to you.

James

Nice fix! If you can't find some 105 deg C replacements, I reckon you could affix the through hole part elsewhere and run leads to the pads as long as everything is secured. It's only low frequency.

Mike Page

I saw an interesting tip on a car video once. Loosely wad up some aluminum foil and close the lid on it. The foil becomes a positive of the empty/negative space available.
