Power saving stand-in video

The video I was supposed to be releasing was about a cheap QI inductive charger for phones.  But I ended up spending way too long trying to hunt down the 16 pin chip they use.

I may have to treat it as a black box and just show the external circuitry.  (Which is still interesting.)

..or maybe the factory worker, realizing that this could cost you $100/year to have plugged in (if you utility co. bills on apparent power), did you a favour and wired it as green night light..

Gordo

So it is basically an unfused green LED-light that you physically can not plug into a UK socket. Nice!

I'm guessing, maybe, that the people building these usually put the cap in the circuit as the client requests but, in this case, the caps were so bad they had to make a quick change to the design. I'm assuming here that the people selling them are employing others to make them so the builders are just scamming a scammer.

I think it's a very common product with many companies including Walmart.

Big Clive

Ah, yet another product to use up those floor-sweeping-grade caps from the skip out back the Chinese factory. Nice that they didn't bother to put it in circuit.

Charles

? the two are literally the same link https://youtu.be/yA5G7kR_xa8

I HAVE THE SAME CHIP ON MY DESK!!! Sorry about the excitement... I was hoping to figure that out... I guess I should watch the rest of the video now.

So a half useful case a few components and not even a bang. Not too bad compared to some we have seen.

When I sold the family home in 2006 it still had (I guess) 1950s wiring (or 1930s even?) - solid core cables wrapped in linen inside very brittle lead sheaths, and every socket was round pins 15A or 5A, also dome shaped toggle action light switches in brown bakelite. Kept one of them as a memento!

15 Amp round 3 pin plugs with no fuse was the original UK electrical equipment I still have a few of his and the person living in his house now has not changed them over or the rubber insulated wiring ? I have mentioned it to them a few times that it is not safe, it is terraced houses built before 1900.

Butter knife - The UK 3 pin plug with protective seals was to protect people who would leaver out a plug with a knife, so I was told. UK back then had a lot of retro fitted surface mounted wiring and electrical fittings on damp walls hence the plugs could be difficult to remove due to a bit of corrosion / tarnishing of the pins and sockets.

THE YOUTUBE VERSION IS OUT OF FOCUS...Patreon version is ok

DELIGHTFUL! DIY BT speaker/LED night light in that case!! Wooo :D

Don't suppose the Qi charger was a Lidl £10 job? Picked one up this week, I'm sure it'd be fine if I didn't have a metal disk on there back of my phone for the magnetic car mount, oops...

Steven Raith

It's a dedicated QI control chip that deals with comms and driving the coil.

Big Clive

It does measure 5uF.

Big Clive

The original meet was about 3 hours, so there was definitely some trimming. Especially the bit where we were discussing the swear words frowned upon by YouTube.

Big Clive

I really enjoyed the video with my fellow Aussie Dave Jones etc. I'm sure there were some juicy tidbits edited out. Lol.. I must be one of the few that watches the videos from patreon posts. Cheers

Jim Hooke

I wonder if the cap is one of those mostly-empty-space jobs inside?

Wim

😁Circuitry is good. Unless the chip is essential to the charger❓ is it special purpose for the qi itself, or for COB package size ✌️👍
