Early video release.

Given that Dave at EEVblog has "outed" my lighting system I'm going to jump that video to the front so it doesn't look like I've copied him.

I'll be doing a Patreon live stream this week.  I'll release the link to the stream shortly.

I used to put PCBs on the flatbed scanner and use that, the focus was amazing even for stuff a couple of cm off the glass. Haven't tried that in 20 years though... maybe the scanner I had was just good at that.

Paul Slootman

LOL good for you. GREAT chat with David Boom and the others on zoom.

DC Allan

I wonder if there's a good replacement with diffusion like this for ring lights for microscopes for soldering - I know SDG Electronics has been working on a better ring light, but the diffusion seems to really help

Tom Stone

I have seen both your’s and Dave’s. I think that Dave overdid it a bit though. I think that I could get as good results with either, but your’s is quite simpler.

Rocco Rizzo

I did a very very similar thing bizzarely, but I used two, and more diffused cheapo Polyprop bowls from a "$2" shop. The LED tape was stuck to the outer and the internal bowl pushed in to it for a snug fit. My tape is "3V" so I have 3 NiMH cells and a resistor in a battery box. I actually got the idea as I saw something similar being used as a ring light at an amatuer radio show in NZ. Though instead of the moden day tape, it had 5MM white LEDs poked in at strategic places. This was in 2003. Yours does a brillant job, I do love the way you print them out, mirror one side and then trace and explain on camera which is brillant for those new to circuits.

Anton

It's a good thing. It encouraged me to make the video about mine.

Big Clive

I watched the stream where you all got together and took from that that Dave was editing out your device to protect your method. Having then watched both your light box video then his, I conclude that was just show. By hiding your device in the live steam meetup, it merely set the path for him to "come up with a BRIGHT idea!". Your tub seems to do a better job! At least at the scale you are working. . :)

Broxie

That didn't show up on thingiverse. Maybe not visible yet? Some general purpose packers are useful. I use a stack of small PCBs to prop things up.

Big Clive

The zoom meeting link is in the description of my macro photo video.

Big Clive

I watched the zoom meeting also. Here is my spin on it. I will be printing in translucent PLA. the wedges are to help prop up boards the are double sided with parts on both sides making it sit uneven. Hope you approve Clive. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4755768

When will the video be released, Clive?

As you suggest she does some OT, also tell her that there'll be wine and chocs waiting for her when you bring her home (after Clive is done).

Ymir the Frost Giant

Mmmm. Maybe you've a right to be - but I won't do any stirring here. Not unless it's a nice cup of tea...

Ymir the Frost Giant

I will admit to being very slightly perplexed.

Big Clive

I thought you and Dave were buddies - you were getting on so well in the zoom thing!

Ymir the Frost Giant

I love that video Clive. I've always wondered how you got such nice pictures of the circuit boards. Very clever.

❤️👍

@seán thank you. I have never liked Adobe products going way back to the 80s? Am I right thinking they would have had something on my Amiga 1000? Or maybe I'm thinking about my shit 286sx I'm making training videos for an online course we are running for scientific types and not tech types so it is only cutting videos together smoothly and I'm passionate about audio and using my collection of analogue rack equipment which I could just do on my computer. But it's more fun using old rack equipment

@alfaguy I am definitely going to look at alternatives. I only tried Adobe because my partners kids gets free adobe through being a student. I'm also looking at a laptop that has a fast i7 or i9 with a good gamers type GPU and a screen with realistic colours. It's a whole new side of computers for me. I'm used to just making websites and doing boring business stuff. People keep telling me I shouldn't probably get the new very expensive MacBook Pro. they are very good. $4000 AUD starting price for the 16" but I could get a windows 16" faster and better for $3000 AUD I have been happy with my surface pro 3 for many years. It is a really nice small machine. It's really fun making video when I'm only responsible for the production. I have got some nice big led panel lights with adjustable temp and high cri. I can use my nice microphones and I am going to use my old audio rack equipment. I have an aphex aural exciter and a bunch of compressor and DSP and EQ equipment that I have for my ham radio. Going to be fun.

Dam, wife is on lates so that I will have to go and get her in mid stream :( Lighting things through tracing paper tents is the method that the photography magazines do articals about, your tupperware is exactly the same :)

Do you have an alternative software package that will do the same job, Handbrake maybe? I've found everything Adobe to be terrible.

AlfaGuy

I liked Dave's light box. Good to see him use some second hand parts and a cardboard box. I'm used to him using expensive camera equipment 🙄. I love how you can get fantastic results with everyday equipment that most of us already have. I have discovered that I'm going to have to buy a very expensive laptop to render videos for some online training courses I'm running. I tried to render a short 1080p video in Adobe premiere Pro and it took 4 days and it still dropped frames and looked really shit using my surface pro 3 which is fast enough for everything else i do

Great love to have Patreon stream

N. Shaun Tremayne

Sadly I will be preoccupied, but regardless I send my love to Clive and our technical family 👪

Michael Thompson

looking forward to the stream!

watched the zoom vid today really enjoyed it

Ha ha ha!
