2021-02-26 20:37:40 +0000 UTCIn New Jersey, the power companies have mounted solar panels on utility poles. The intelligent inverters in them are designed to correct power factor on the grid towards one from either direction. They both generate energy and optimize the grid at the same time.
2021-02-25 23:23:34 +0000 UTCPower factor question. I generate 7.6kw solar power at peak sun, but my solaredge inverter show's over 2kw of reactive power. Am I providing free correction for my local utility?

2021-02-25 15:30:17 +0000 UTCIf you have used an appropriate gauge wire to make the repair then you should be fine. Just be aware that automotive environments can be harsh on electronics, and you may be revisiting this PCB for further work.

2021-02-25 12:23:55 +0000 UTCPre COVID I volunteered at a local repair cafe and thought it great that there was such a good supply of third party spare parts to fix broken Dysons. But after you see as many as I did come in for repair, you think - hold on - Why is there such a strong market for Dyson spares? Because the damn things break all the time. My 20+ year old Panasonic and 10+ year old Henry are still absolutely fine.

2021-02-25 10:53:35 +0000 UTCIn the UK it appears that more & more companies are turning to subcontractor employment roles. So the employed person becomes responsible for pension, health, insurance and so on, also has no rights as they are self-employed. The Gig Economy. I have become part of this and it is horrible. Contrary to this my son has landed a job with a Japanese Company and they treat their employees like family. When and how has it gone so "wrong" here do you think ?

2021-02-25 07:45:57 +0000 UTCI have recently bought an electric socket tester (HT107E), mainly to check the polarity of UK extension leads plugged in via earthed adapters to sockets in my Norwegian apartment. I was more than a little surprised to see the voltage reading of 165v, rather than much closer to the 230v it's supposed to be. What could be the cause of such a voltage drop?

2021-02-25 06:28:35 +0000 UTCHave put the below up before, might as well again. ---------------------------------------------------------- Looking for questions for this week? I have 2. 1st: This is one you might want to pose to the chat. Are there any lossleader electronics floating around on the market at the moment? It seems most have dried up due to Covid. Pre-Covid there was the "smart" speaker boom, where a number of the major players were handing out speakers at low or no cost to get people suckered into their systems. A good number always end up being sold as "new" secondhand on ebay/other marketplace, for a while they were a good way of getting speakers/enclosure/batteries + usb charging components for a lot cheaper than the parts individually. Can you ask chat if there are any good hack it to bits targets in the wild at the moment, thanks. 2nd: Trams (Trolleys in the US/Canada) typically are around 600 - 800 volts DC depending on the system (example the Manx Electric Railway is 550 V DC), and it wasn't uncommon for railways to use 1500 V DC. Up until the 1970's lighting was typically a number of incandescent bulbs in series, which were perfectly fine with this arrangement being simple resistivity loads (although if one went out, they all went out). From the 70's refits and new builds commonly had fluorescent interior lighting, what trickery did they use to get fluros working on DC? For everyone who doesn't know (Clive and many others would know this already) fluros with the correct DC voltage and drive circuitry will work but have a limited life as the mercury will all migrate to the negative end and stay there. How did they get around this? Was it as simple as using a rotary switch that swapped the polarity each time they were turned on? Something, mechanical such as a small rotary converter (motor-alternator) to make AC? Or something like a astable multivibrator (two transistors) switching a transformer to make AC (were they doing this in the '70? it would have cost $$$)? Thanks ----------------------------------------------------------

2021-02-25 00:16:18 +0000 UTCWhat components/ electronic items do you find are ridiculously cheap for what they are. For me it's the slow/ fast flash RGB LED's, and Arduino boards that seem crazy cheap for whats goes into them even going by cheapie Chinese stuff standards.

2021-02-24 23:29:44 +0000 UTCFirstly thanks for remembering callums whoofle. My question is what is your current recommended method of soldering smd's. Including processors and chips? Would you use an iron or rework station (hot air)?
2021-02-24 23:25:11 +0000 UTCI have one of those UVC lights with timers and motion detection like the black table top one you have but it's all on one board and I want to modify it so it can stay on for longer periods than an hour. It's in a large garage full of spiders and possibly snakes. I want to damage their DNA. Something with those led strips that are individually addressable and they come with controllers on eBay. They look interesting and I have one but not played with yet. Make some good room lights with better drivers and swap in high CRI leds and better heatsinks using eBay parts. I have made a few using adjustable speed controllers and different types of drivers. High power portable spot or flood light with a row or group of those clear spot lenses and xhp70 Cree led with adjustable brightness and lipo battery. All available on eBay. I have tons of ideas

2021-02-24 23:04:44 +0000 UTC---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It might be interesting to ask if any listeners that have had COVID-19 have been using a PULSE OXIMETER to monitor BLOOD OXYGEN levels and what levels did they see ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you use an OZONE GENERATOR to sterilize a room, is there a good way of removing ozone from the air before you breathe it in? (Maybe activated charcoal mask?) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you feel the need to start a RANT, mention the different types of CROSS HEAD SCREWDRIVERS - Phillips, Pozidrive, Type-2, JIS, Sel-O-Fit, French Recess, ACR Phillips...... 2021-02-24 22:45:26 +0000 UTCI bought some finest chinesium lighting. A 60w ring light. Can provide the link if you'd like. 60quid so I wasn't expecting much. Its got a generic 240v 60w driver that used to dim on a varilight pro dimmer. It's just stopped dimming. Not sure if dimmer has failed or if PSU is off. Best 60w PSU with teenie 2 pin feed to LEDs? Also was thinking of replacing the led strip with maybe a double loop to run more LEDs at lower power (the Phillips UAE LED solution) it's a good fitting well built just the led bit I imagine is cheap and will crap out so I'll start searching out the replacements now

2021-02-24 21:47:18 +0000 UTCFWIW I never thought much of Fluke leads. They're safe sure, but any good at zeroed continuity? NOPE. It's a specification issue. I did a stint at Megger recently and my desk neighbour brought in a set of leads they'd just tested in the high energy room. They had visible blow holes. "You should have seen them earlier, they were smoking!" I queried further and he explained these were Chinese leads but the British ones were even worse. Clearly for this test - like Fluke - they were focussing on breakdown. But that's not all that matters.

2021-02-24 21:18:39 +0000 UTC;-) I was looking at this. Jsut got the modules I need to try it out. I was thnking of using a H bridge motor driver with a 35v supply, initially hooked up to an arduino for testing the best frequencies, but later I reckon a cheap microcontroller would do.

2021-02-24 19:52:51 +0000 UTCWhats the state in Mainland UK in terms of Covid? In Austria they (gov.) ordered a news embargo to any other News Channel thats not the ORF, so nobody can make his/her own opinion because you only get one kind of information ( kind of scary because you normally only hear that from China/Turkey/Russia/ ect. )
2021-02-24 19:31:20 +0000 UTCFew days ago I repaired an automotive AC control module PCB that had a few broken tracks (they feel rotten, corroded) using bodge wire. The PCB worked fine. Is it safe to use the PCB this way, or I need to buy a new one? PCB just had some switches, Diodes, LEDs and a tiny transistor.
2021-02-24 19:30:38 +0000 UTCMy induction hob has randomly started tripping the RCB (when it's not being used!) When idle it seems to be drawing 380 ma (measured with UT210E) - it's a plug in unit supplied with 13Amp fused plug. This seems a lot for a unit in standby. Normally no current shown in Earth lead just the 380ma through the L & N. My thoughts are some input capacitor problems but I've not opened it up yet. Any thoughts from the electrical masses?

2021-02-24 19:24:27 +0000 UTCHow about: "Why do we get very good (and not cheap) multimeters supplied with absolutely shit test leads? (Possible Fluke excepted) .
