I've just checked that out. It would be quite expensive compared to calcium nitrate. I'd guess the use of calcium nitrate in commercial glitter lamps is possibly due to its widespread availability as a fertiliser.

You read the steam comment out live, apologies for the double comment!

My wife is from Edinburgh and she was watching earlier and thought you sounded more Edinburgh than weegie. Do you think the Manx influence has affected your accent?

Mark Chapman

Thanks for letting me know about that

A suggestion for another Yagermunion toast : Tim Hunkin. Today especially, because next week he's starting a youtube series 'The secret life of components'.

The important thing is to separate the pins so they don't all need desoldering at the same time. For DIP components, cut the leads. For headers, remove the plastic strip joining them together. Of course, neither works if you want to preserve the component, but often the most important thing is to avoid destroying pads or tracks on the pcb.

Question for the stream: how the hell does one desolder a THT-Multipin component properly? I can do it, but it's always a faff and a brutal operation that leaves at least some damage. Solder wick doesn't work for me at all, I have modded my solder pump with a silicone tube nozzle, that works better but still leaves the pins mechanically connected to the board. I had to desolder 8 20-pin 2-row pin headers, and I ended up weighing them down with a weight hanging off some croc clips and heating the pins with a hot air gun at 350°. Is there any good way of doing this without (potentially) frying everything on the board?

I'm always fascinated by your glitter/lava lamp explorations - a combination of electricity, light, and chemistry. I wonder if you've considered strontium chloride as an alternate way to densify the solution? It's about as safe as calcium chloride, doesn't seem to be terribly expensive, apparently can produce clear solutions in water (not sure if this involves filtering or limiting the strength of the solution or what), and can take the density of a water solution up to almost 3kg / litre. AIUI, that's a fair bit higher than calcium chloride.

Very good! My USB glitter keeps rising to the top. I'll have to adjust the hot spot.

Andrew Donaldson

Ah a glitter lamp :)

How about a yagermunion toast to the Snow Moon? Sat February 28, at 8.17am GMT. Think it gets its name when there’s been a lot of snowfall.
