Industrial switch-fuse teardown.

A faulty isolator/fuse from an elevator/lift.

Quite a ferocious over centre spring mechanism in the base.  It doesn't take much effort to rotate the common contact moving bar.  Most of the force is to pressurise the springs to ensure a fast and solid switching action

I've just bought a circa, I'm guessing, 1950's Simplex fused switchbox all built into a flameproof enclosure for a project I'm working on. I couldn't help but compare it with this modern version. I can't actually lift the Simplex which has a 4 pole set of knife blade switches and housed 3 30amp porcelain rewireable fuses and a smaller one, perhaps to fuse 240v but it had been bridged with cable.

There are two very scary springs in the base module.

It was murder, and I can prove it!

Thank goodness that powerful spring was contained. Unlike the wretched silica.

Andrew Donaldson

Really enjoyed that - yes the ‘clunk’ is such a satisfying sound / feel with those & bigger DBs etc

Excellent work Sherlock; another chapter for your casebook.

Should be sand quenched wire, iirc 👍 edit: Clive said its a ceramic disk insert with the silica sand that turns to glass at the disconnect current

Cerity

what does the inside of one of those fuses look like?
