Little explosive extra...

This video was sent to me to put on the channel.  It's quite a "moment" when a stray screw goes into a lithium cell in a DIY power wall.

https://youtu.be/pRaGIHFLeUg

The original owner of the video will be getting 50% of the advertising revenue to put towards buying new lithium cells and underwear.

I'll be releasing this on the main channel straight away as a little extra.

Little explosive extra...

My nephew, who is a radio amateur for 40 odd years, had his house burnt down because he neglected the danger of charging batteries..

Problem is he does not look too shocked or surprised when it happens. Perhaps hes always doing it Perhaps its Electroboom really!!!

They needed an explosion proof bathtub for that.

If you believe the timestamp in the top right corner, this happened at 6am. Perhaps they appear so laid back because they were "tired and emotional" after staying up all night.

AlfaGuy

How is that other guy calmly sitting with his face in front of something on fire that could blow up again?!

Sound ridiculous, you got love some peoples enthusiasm, just hope no one sues him when they get splattered with paint and their old Grandma dies waiting for the defibrillator to charge.

DC Allan

most hilarious. Would love to hear what was said. What they need is an explosion proof pie dish (copyright BCDC)

DC Allan

Not if they had a smoke alarm ;)

Mike Page

πŸŽ‚ BTW ...did you make a wish when you blew it out?

Phil in the kitchen

Loved the "Oh, I'll just bow it out" technique of putting out the toxic fire!

WHAT THE.....? If sitting there with the potential to have your face burnt off isn't bad enough - D. Stuart... in your 50+ years of dealing with things like this... didn't the fact that it was venting toxic gases not have the two of you (and the unit) high-tailing out of there faster than a poked rat? - https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-09784-z

"I'll just put this over here with the rest of the fire"

Here in Sweden there's a guy who's built himself his own "little fire engine". Lots of dubious stuff involved, but in the spirit of good intentions and bad execution he's also funded and installed AEDs - automated defibrillators in a number of public places local to him. All well thus far. But he's modified them. To prevent theft, he's put them in locked cabinets and fitted them all with pyrotechnic paint charges, like in cash deliveries. And because the proper battery packs are "too expensive" he's taken to opening them up and building his own... DIY batteries in a defibrillator... that'll be ideal.

Power Wall is the Tesla term for whole house backup battery. Think something that holds the kWh you need for daily/peak/ prolonged power outage from the utility πŸ‘

The shock and fear generally contract the muscles, actually gripping it harderπŸ––

Holy πŸ€―πŸ€―πŸ™ˆ That’s good noone was hurt. Hard to believe only that module was damaged. That mounting plate looks like slate... non conductive heavy insulator. This is an example of why power wall gets ample space, or its own shed with two kinds of backup venting/ power cutoff

Cerity

Thank you for the info on the power wall. I have 5kw of solar panels which currently feed back into the grid but would like to have a backup for when we lose connection which is weekly and sometimes for many hours.

Sure! Discovered that surplus, extremely low 'mileage' 36V scooter packs were out on the market for $1.20 a cell or so, and needed tov replace my aged 12V lead-acid setup, so i did some digging and figured out a setup. There are a _few_ 36V lead-acid based UPS units out there, cheap, without batteries. (The Minute-man Enterprise 500VA and 1000VA ones are my faves. Sine wave, easy to connect external batts to.) A li-ion 10 cell series pack has almost perfect voltage levels to work with these. Wire a batch together, paralleling each set of cells between packs. (Have to balance carefully when doing this!) then add a quality BMS. Each of those 8 pack racks is about 3.5Kwh of storage. Use a Cisco 48V 1200W router P/S and an accurate buck converter to charge them when running for a long spell. (Inverter generator for a few hours in the afternoon/evening to run them up, then batteries all night.) Just picked up a 3000W 36V inverter to handle refer/freezer and, if needed the water pump.

My complexion was several shades darker 'till a few scrubs, and my gym shorts had molten plastic burn thru them, but no real hurt. Tho not great on the lungs and me inhaling to blow out the wood fire was stupid. But still alive here...

D. Stuart

Not really. I've done several of these type setups, first time screwing a cell. Hopefully the last. But 50 years + of dealing with large and small 'incidents; mechanical, electrical and chemical, I've just learned to react carefully, assess things and then deal with it. Knowing what 'sparked' the situation, figured that there was enough thermal mass to keep things from cascading as long as we got it loose and cooled off quickly. Don't think it damaged more than one other cell. Still need to check on the pack, tho. Been busy and wasn't up to fighting with it again for a bit. Somewhat shaky afterwards... But the replacement's in place, now to wire it up when I get another free day. (Gotta have 'em. The utility was down over 8 days in January. Electric scooter batteries keep me in lights, comms and a bit of heat when PG&E's thinking about dropping by our neck of the woods...) But the reason this video was posted was not just because it's exciting, but to remind folks that these things can be really nasty if not respected. (Drywall screw thru 18650 cell is a baaaddd idea!)

D. Stuart

Wow. When watching I couldn't help thinking "Stop Holding The Thing That's On Fire".

Nani Isobel

What is a power wall?

Mark Trombley

Dangerous Stuff this Elastictricity specially with batteries the bloke with the drill didn't seem bothered at all

I want to know more about the power wall design they made

Simon Deards VK3FSPD

That’s insane holding like that while on fire. It’s like when those Electric cars go on fire - have to wait until they burn out all their charge. Crikey.

did he put it in the pie containment dish??

Aaron Nadler

Remarkable how they both kept their composure! Glad that it appears they weren't hurt.

Totally unfazed, make you wonder if it is a regular occurance. I would have shite myself.

"Well that wasn't a wooffle was it? " .. lol

Peter Stevens

Something tells me doing this sort of project in your living room is a bad idea.

Adam Christensen

Jesus, aside from a little duck and cover these two didn't seemly skip a beat on camera ... but yeah, a couple new sets of drawers indeed; and maybe a few stiff drinks to unclench those butt cheeks.

Peter Stevens

Just a spark calm down just makes your hair curl a bit if you have any πŸ˜„

Steve Nuttall

Eeek, that's pretty terrifying.

Jrandom Bob

Wow, i wouldnt of just sat there holding it.

I wish their was audio on this!

Dr Andy Hill

Yikes! I'd definitely need new underwear if it was me!

Benjamin Hall

Wow! I've recently taken delivery of my first Hybrid car, Those lithium cells lurking under the boot scare me!

Dr Andy Hill

That sick. Must smell very sweet in there.
