The two-wire chopstick sanitiser

Having already reverse engineered the four-wire version of this, I thought it would be fun to look at the simpler two wire version.

I love the visual effect of the tubes in these, but they probably are quite electrically noisy. (As well as being audibly noisy.)

I pondered that, but wonder if the continuous supply from the cap dropper would keep it latched.

Big Clive

Would love to see a scope across the transformer primary. I'm wondering at what point either the ringing dies out naturally or the SCR unlatches.

nanofarts no less!

Michael Thompson

I wish my science teacher explained things like Clive... Farts and boobies.

Nuts 'n' Proud

I was thinking that looked like a relay position as well.

Michael Thompson

The 2W10 location is strange, the only thing I can find on this is for a half wave rectifier, it may be an option instead of the discrete diodes but the layout looks like a relay position. Maybe the labels don't line up properly and the board has options for both versions?

The Tinkering Shed

I get the feeling it's not radio friendly.

Big Clive

They're not very bright. They'd be better with a real crackle tube or a bit of LED fakery.

Big Clive

Thank you for exploring into the 120V side of things, Clive! These are interesting, but I think they would not like my radios. LOL

Michael Thompson

doubtful...

Scott Miller

I'll say! from what I can see, it would dump an exactly equal spike energy into the mains as it does into the transformer. 220nf out from the SCR in both directions! Nasty!!! Of course, I have one on order!!!

@6:42 .. BC breaks out singing ... "My hump my hump my hump my hump my hump my hump. My lovely lady lumps"

Chopstick sanitizer? hmmm, two metal sticks across the mains. Totally safe. lol

Peter Stevens

Got one of them yesterday. Changed the mains wires straight away - they were crushed in a few places. Bloody noisy thing but does seem to produce a fair amount of ozone.

John Carr

I thought it last time and I'll say it this time. These would make great SFX for amateur horror films.

Ymir the Frost Giant

They're not triple boobies - they're two boobies and a belly. Or something. Could be my nose.

If you can’t hear it, how do you know it’s working 👍 Trying to answer my own question here, at 1.3 W, would 100 of these be more effective than 1 100x larger❓ yes right because we’re talking the surface area interface of the tube to create the corona These explainers have made me somuch more confident tackling small household issues❤️ thanks always BC🖖
