Fixing the supercomputer

Not sure if this is a good video or not, but it's swapping the LEDs that had failed for red ones to show the status of crappy Chinese LEDs.

https://youtu.be/bI_zgZz-V40

I managed to delete the original start to this video prior to changing the LEDs!

You could colour code replacements according to how long they lasted, that would give you a MTBF map for that particular part. I wonder whether segmenting the time-to-failure according to a linear or logarithmic scale would give the most diversity (ok, make the prettiest patterns)..

The better automated theatre lights tend to have a lot of low intensity diagnostic indicators on the PCBs. They're extremely useful.

Big Clive

The effect of your hands illuminated by the panel when the lights were turned off was rather pleasing. Modern Supercompute clusters also end up with a lot of flashing lights mainly pover supply and node status lights. As well as the flickering lights on the interconnect switches. Also quit pleasing.

CLIVE Guess the next one to BLOW Competition give away suggestion (Prize all the dead LEDs set in resin) ;-) Entry to the competition is to post on Patron the location CODE R01C01 - R13-C18 All the best John

John Harrison

It was suiyanr. Unfortunately they were one of the few selling the correct type of LED.

Big Clive

Says the guy who looks just like a thug as well.

Big Clive

That would be another head shave.

Big Clive

Sometimes you have to add extra waterproofing to many of the outdoor LED lights.

Big Clive

Vintage BCDC, definitely worth sharing with the world.

Jason Brinkerhoff

This is a great - and as usual, relaxed - video that every one should have the change to enjoy.

Zeedijk Mike

Interesting. My maths isn't what it used to be, but that's got me thinking about plausible frequency and amplitude distributions.

Mike Page

All of the supercomputer talk lately has lead to me ordering some PCBs to build some of my own! (I have a cluster of several modern servers in my basement, they look far less impressive than this...) Agreed with everyone else that this is a great video!

I favour a regular reset, possibly synchronized to JagerTime. (Computer says DRINK!)

Mike Page

I think it's a great video. Also had to replace a few on my two boards. Changing the colours is going to look like the life simulator software we used to run on our eight bit computers

N. Shaun Tremayne

Terrible design

Michael Thompson

I like the video. Definitely put this one up. I'm sure people would love to see it. I understand what you mean about how a person's voice is not very indicative of what they look like.

Can you share the seller so we can avoid them?

Benjamin Hall

I think green or Yellow might look better! The thing is if Clive can determine if the failed LEDS are blue ones or redones. after all, they won't light up any more!

William Taylor

When a red one fails what colour should it be replaced with...

You do have very gentle voice. You remind me of a guy i know who does radio, similar gentle voice and also looked like a thug. He is a gentle giant if you know him.

Matt Larson

Streams contain smut "unfortunately" he says despite encouraging it, haha. I will download some streams as audio for listening in the car, hadn't considered that before.

Matt Tester

Came across this on Flea bay today!! You should have patented the Joule Thief BC!! https://www.ebay.com/itm/Joule-Thief-Emergency-light-electronic-kit/124614628668?_trkparms=aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D231489%26meid%3D68bb751db9c34d1e9bb6644ff2acdcfb%26pid%3D101195%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D12%26mehot%3Dpf%26sd%3D164759117113%26itm%3D124614628668%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DSimplAMLv9PairwiseUnbiasedWeb%26brand%3DUnbranded&_trksid=p2047675.c101195.m1851

Yes worth releasing to the public :)

Further thought on previous comment, use the voltage produced at the resistor load side to modulate a voltage controlled oscillator for that classic 1980s "im working on it" noise.

Great video as always Clive. As an audio enthusiast I would put a low value resistor in series with the supply and couple the load side of the supply via a capacitor to an audio amp/speaker to get an interesting random noise as the leds switch. The sound from initial power up would be great!

You definitely don't look like a thug but you do need a haircut big guy 🙂

The Tinkering Shed

You should switch that thing on after you started the stream, or reset it. I love it when they all flash in sync and then drift apart into soothing randomness. It's also a very good demonstration how it works. I guess quite a few people think there's a lot more to it's construction.

MrTridac

I bought one of those.

Andrew Donaldson

What 12V LED's would you recommend for outdoor water features? My pre-wired ones only last a year.

Andrew Donaldson

Around 1993 or so I worked for the company, Selecto-Mation that ran the "bio-rhythm" machine at Edmund Scientific (yes THAT one in Barrington, NJ) good times.

Michael Thompson

I had noticed LEDs failing on yours previously. I ran into this with my slow color changing ones in my A4, but everything has stabilized since the flakey ones have been replaced new ones. My "standard" A4 one with green flashing LEDs seems has fared much better by comparison. My original small version sent me has been great with no problems, but it was from a batch.

Michael Thompson

AvE is actually a 12 year old girl & LPL is a rather famous politician...

Scott Miller

I'll miss no.6 on the top row, it was very endearing.

Ymir the Frost Giant

You talk of the time when computers could predict your future... I bought a Kosmos Astro and a Kosmos I biorythm, both pocket calcs from the late 70s which told your fortune in the stars using 7 seg digits and your moods using 3 LEDs. Looking fwd to experimenting with them. From the time when uprocs first replaced logic chips in pocket calcs.

Ymir the Frost Giant

This is like Game of Life... for real!

Ymir the Frost Giant

What?!! Who ever said you looked like a thug that escaped prison. That is hurtful to all the thugs that have escaped prison! 😜

Lostngone

Never seen AvE and never seen Lock Picking Lawyer either. Men of mystery.

Derek Smith

Thug life 😎😂🤣
