Another buddha box - but with memory dump

I've looked at these units before.  They are sold for use in meditation, and have about 39 sections of music and chants built in.

This time I dumped the flash memory so it can be downloaded and explored if you wish.  The link is in the YouTube description.

Note that the memory is just 2 Megabytes, so the audio is a bit crushed.

I'm disappointed that the flower stem isn't a trumpet for the speaker

adrian

They probably don't care about the level of audio compression given the how crap the speaker quality will be.

Could be a Jie Li or WTV chip, but I'm very doubtful. I put the dump into a hex program, saw the lookups and what seems to be just random data after 9720. It doesn't seem to be: mp3, pcm, adpcm, ulaw, or any of the common ones. It could be something odd like gsm or even amr (doubtful). Odd as the Jie Li chips support ADPCM as well as the obvious mp3 and you can get 90 seconds of mono 44kHz. It sould seem just a much easier cheap throw-in.

It seems to be kept to a minimum with no obvious external pads. It's optimised to take pre-programmed memory.

I mentioned on the video that I thought it might be a repurposed greeting card IC. While looking on Amazon to see if I could find a recordable card with external memory to poke at the format, I found some modules that look pretty similar. But they have a button to trigger recording. I wonder if there's a trace coming out of that blob that is a recording trigger… thought it's probably meaningfully different due to the multi-track nature of the thing.

Hope someone can figure out the format. A follow up where you load the cheap shitty pink USB charger from China song into this would be amazing.

One ad. says 53 songs, yet identical items at half the price don't mention music. Which could be a disappointment for some, as the ads are showing the same stock picture with controls. In fact the sellers: yoyonstore and forestystore have confirmed to me that theirs don't play any music.

Played with the file. I think there are lookup tables in the beginning. Two sets of lookup tables though? Weird. The individual sound clips appear to be delimited by 13 (carriage return) and are in a headless format of unknown type. Also a lot of space isn't used. They could of put another dozen or more chants on there. What a rip!

So❓what is it

No potato-vision here. May be a YouTube glitch. If it happens to others I'll re-upload it. Potato vision being an old fashioned blocky image associated with older cameras.

Believe it or not, I was *just* rewatching the original buddha box video last night. Since I'm getting pretty well versed in decoding audio headers and such, I was curious what the flash might contain. And Big Clive delivers!

Potato??

Potatoes??

Gadgetman

Video started up in potato even though YT said it was 1080HD. Manually changing the res to 720 got rid of the potato.

It would be great if I could adapt. Improve the speaker, allow nursery rhymes for children, or upload your own soothing music and get rid of the chants. No Kids so an SD Slot for some music of my choice.

Jeremy Travis

Unexpected potatoes for first 30s - just me? Didn't happen on third play, must be YT tuning the data or something. Interesting BIN file. I'm not familiar with these things but can see some of the structure. There's probably an SDK with tools for compiling the image.

I wonder if the sound chip is related to the one used on this module, which has SPI flash support? Eg a chip on blob version of this dev board circuit? https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000979466254.html
