Not a video (yet) - can you guess what it is?

Mystery device that I'm currently running tests on.

It's notable that the clone has balance circuitry unlike the original device it's based on.

I have to say that it looks extremely technical.  Like a sci-fi prop.

It's from a scrapped power bank, but you can buy the bare modules on eBay. This one is only running on a single pair of cells to test their capacity.

Big Clive

Where did you get the board with the USB sockets on, Clive? I could do with one of those! 💕

Photon Phil

Morse Code Repeater?

Andrew Donaldson

Before reading the comments I thought it looked vaguely like a sonar pulse rangefinder :)

Wireball MacCarter

I must have missed something as it says, "Video unavailable"

Andrew Donaldson

Looks like a rechargeable Ryobi tool battery pack. It looks to be full of 10 sub-C sized cells.

Guessing its a power bank with a couple of USB torches plugged into it.

Raven Luni

Looks like a lamp for use with a power tool brand charger.

Steampunk device soon for sale on Etsy

Andrew Donaldson

A light that will last decades?

Simon York

From the comments I'm reading so far Clive, it may be worth considering doing a video about how an average user can go about re-balancing / saving dead battery packs. I certainly have a few Ryobi ones which haven't had issues so far (touch wood) but it would be good to know how to rescue them if they were to go kaput.

It looks like it has potential. Very similar to my oil burner.

Big Clive

Looks like a Ryobi battery pack

David K

Clive ! you need this in your life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2OmUBpn66k

yes a ryobi battery pack, hint part number on back left. The usb power module???

richard ockman

A military style ration pack? 😋

Peter Luijer

Some sort of tool battery to USB? That'd be extremely useful. And you could 3D print whatever make of battery pack connecter it was going to be attached to.

Ross Robertson

If it has spent any time in salt water, Mavis will be completely wrecked. DC electrolysis and salt water make short work of PCBs.

Big Clive

Chainsaw battery! Clone of an 18V makita with a stripped down usb module and 2 usb led light modules?

Definitely looks like a Ryobi battery.

Matt Tester

Are you making a powerbank from the chainesaw battery... Or is it a batery upgrade for a sex toy.

Pierre

I dont know what it is but do know what I would love it to be, the electric part of a submersible for Scrufdog s hunt for mavis project I would love to see the technical family get behind developing a remote operated submersible, he cant do it on his lonesome but I bet if the Teck Family got behind the project, someone could do the control electrics and one do the 3D printing of the body, you get the idea, I know Scrufdog would not ask so I am, any chance of organising this Clive. it would be fun watching this come together.

Looks like a battery pack for some kind of tool system but with extra LED lights attached,

Matthew Beddow

Rocket powered raspberry pi 😋

It looks to be a Ryobi battery pack, with the module from a USB style power bank, and then 2 USB LED torch modules plugged in.

TopEndSpoonie

Bedside reading lamp ;-) or a "Insane-a-tizer" pocket torch Thee big lump on top I guess is the charging adaptor for a cordless drill charger. That is quite a lot of Li-ion cells. I remember the usb aluminium lamps from years ago.

John Harrison

It's a USB power bank module on the pack with two USB LED modules similar to those previously seen on the death daleks

Jason Brinkerhoff

A stripped power tool battery pack with LED flashlights attached.

Frank

Is it s test rig for tool batteries

I've rebuilt quite a lot (official and clones), so far they've all had balancing though.

DrSquirrel

modern ryobi still use the post design.

Kate Cole

thats a ryobi drill battery.

Kate Cole

Well it’s not Dewalt / Makita or AEG, seen the insides of too many of those, but at least my spare 18650 collection has grown significantly. Surprised with the older AEG (or whoever they are now ) a glass bead thermistor used right on the edge of the pack - a gentle knock on site and another “it won’t recharge “ battery to fix

RDM

That seems to apply to many other brands too.

Big Clive

It's obviously a Flux capacitor.

Bas

It's not a Lidl one. It's a clone of a prominent brand.

Big Clive

Some of the failures (seemingly low capacity) are due to cell imbalance issues.

Big Clive

Have you been to a Lidl?

Lorcán Adrain

Dyson vacuum cleaner battery.

Matthias “Thias” Wiesmann

Definitely want to see this one! I've never had the patience to reverse engineer one of these and have several that have failed.

HarveyB

Made from powertool 🔋 pack

A big ass powerbank?!

A mediocre spot welder with the leads missing, obviously.

Power tools battery pack with the vertical center post. On a more abstract level, I'm seeing a space vessel with the bridge in the center and the 2 powerful plasma reactors in the back. Love that glowing LED effect here.

Raphaël

Power tool battery pack. Can’t wait for this one =D

A 4AH 18v lithium battery pack for a power tool, but design to fit in an old school nicad tool as it's got a center post.

Stuart Goggin

It is clearly a personal peanut butter maker, for those who like fresh squeezed peanut butter.

Mark Trombley

A mod to one of those old torches with the big 1209 6v batteries?

Snorkers

Actually, this

Jeremy Impson

He's done teardown and hacking (different colored led) video on them. I bought a bunch and changed one to be IR to use with my IR camera Raspberry pi module.

Jeremy Impson

Is it even possible to have ryobi tool batteries for long without at some point needing to disassemble it to recover from a too-low state of charge?

Also, podraces

To close together. Maybe ball light

Simon Deards VK3FSPD

Ryobi battery. I can see it on the PCB. I like those USB lights. Never seen them before

Simon Deards VK3FSPD

Some steampunk goggle light thing...

It's a boob illuminator, one light each.

PeteyPak

Something, something, rare earth magnets

A weather manipulator, to make it sunny all year long.

Andrew Donaldson

It's a cordless bank for a "chooching" device

Most likely Ryobi (See: https://notsealed.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Ryobi-18v-battery-open.jpg)

Hog Duske

It looks kind of like a taser with that bright blue section, I see that it's not though.

Spectrum DIY

Looks like a drill battery pack attached to a power bank module.

Gunplumber

Flashlight

Looks like a power tool battery with the protection circuitry on top. :)

Fluxcapacitor V2.x

Mike Weijmans

Looks like a powertool battery
