Questions and answers?
Added 2021-09-06 21:44:10 +0000 UTCI'm in Glasgow this week, so there aren't any videos coming from the normal bench.
I was thinking of doing a questions and answers video. So fire away with questions - technical and otherwise.

I'll have to investigate times around the world. The existing time is optimised for where the majority of viewers are.

2021-09-14 13:02:57 +0000 UTCwill there be any upcoming streams with multiple techy youtubers like the last one? it was a great watch!
2021-09-13 20:13:21 +0000 UTCWould you be willing to do a live stream at a time suitable for Australia? Would be great join the chat but it's a bit too early in the morning.
2021-09-13 10:32:04 +0000 UTCAre you planning any meet ups in the UK? I miss the drive from Liverpool to Glasgow or Edinburgh for the day.

2021-09-10 22:39:30 +0000 UTCYou have occasionally shown glimpses of your acting and singing abilities in your videos. https://youtu.be/tX0lKqguw7s is a hoot! Have you ever performed on stage or screen?
2021-09-10 07:29:47 +0000 UTCI already bought a battery and charger. Now I just have to find out if I can put it in luggage.

2021-09-09 17:11:44 +0000 UTCIt would be great to find a local industrial building. But all property in Glasgow is treated as if it's potentially a lucrative housing development.

2021-09-09 16:07:05 +0000 UTCHere's an odd thing. I have 2 new 2G phones that I use to call customers from doorstep when they don't hear the bell . Often, I hear their house phone ringing but dead in the ear piece. After about 20 seconds I get the ring tone as normal. If they answer I can hear as normal. It must be a 2G thing.

2021-09-08 14:15:01 +0000 UTCHow about a quick review of battery/cell types and how to test their capacity and pro Vs con of each type? Battery technology seems to change faster than a lead acid Dcell in my sister's "toy" drawer.

2021-09-07 19:06:13 +0000 UTCGreat list of questions, I am also curious about what it’s like to be a “famous” YouTuber? it must bring it’s fair share of unwelcome attention (other than the obvious crowd wanting you to promote their stuff).
2021-09-07 18:07:53 +0000 UTCif every single post made here ... comtains a few zillion questions, how many duplicates you will have to skip? Seriously: No question, but a wish: more "lets solder project x together". I miss those, kind of

2021-09-07 15:10:34 +0000 UTCLPL is great. I bought some picks and a practice lock (transparent) off eBay, before he had his own store. I think LPL undervalues his own skill when he embarrasses yet another lock maker - the lock would be fine in most circumstances as long as you know where LPL and his like-skilled friends are. Regular thieves would never pick it. Raking a lock is another thing entirely of course. For those of you who have no idea what we're talking about, look up Lock Picking Lawyer on You-Tube - vids are short, frequent, entertaining, and enlightening.

2021-09-07 13:53:30 +0000 UTCI found your video about replacing the echo card in the Centaur pinball machine interesting. What do you think of showing a bit more of the machine, specifically how the bits on the table, like the bumpers and flippers, work? Might be too much disassembly to get at them, I guess, but would be cool to see.
2021-09-07 13:53:16 +0000 UTC69 comments.. talk about being late to the party :P * If you could return to key points in your life- what would you change and why? * Did you had second thoughts about starting livestreams- in general- or even specific livestreams? * What was / were the highlights of your career- both as a conetent creator and at your day-job? * What was the worst hate-mail (and/or comment on youtube) you've recieved about one of your videos? * What are your top recommendations for starting a technical channel? * Out of curiosity- Are you, June and Kevin planning to make MBC merch? If you are- will it be something smutty, technical or a combination of them? * Did you ever had any problems allocating time for youtube/patreon/HVAC podcasts (e.g. being forced to delay videos, being unable to finish a video on time)? * What video editing software / tools do you use? Do you have an editor- or do you edit your videos by yourself? And... last, but no least- thanks for all the effort you put in your channels and in your content. The technical videos are interesting and educating, the shameless clickbaits are definettly doing their job and the patreon streams are a great way to "take the edge off" and have some laughs.
2021-09-07 13:21:30 +0000 UTCHe's had a fair share of stuff from AliExpress before. Wish is basically AliExpress with a middleman to drive the prices up. You find the same stuff on Ali but cheaper. 👍
2021-09-07 12:24:50 +0000 UTCLots of eBay items get torn apart; is there ever anything good on wish.com?
2021-09-07 12:15:26 +0000 UTCHave you ever done a "9 to 5" type desk job? Where was it and why?
2021-09-07 11:33:35 +0000 UTCI've heard that on the London underground, it's still possible to find mercury vapour rectifiers in operation. Have you ever found ancient and super cool electrical components still in operation like that?
2021-09-07 11:31:48 +0000 UTCHave you ever set yourself or something else on fire due to electrical short or similar?
2021-09-07 11:29:39 +0000 UTCSome electronics YTubers, (Mr. Carlson, Ian Scott, Dave etc.) use measuring equipment with 5 or more decimals. Seems like they can't get too many digits. Have you ever, professionally or hobby, had any need for more than 2, maybe 3 digits?

2021-09-07 10:23:25 +0000 UTCIt made me smile when you got so excited as you realized the potato vision on the last stream would be a good title background / thumbnail. I appreciate the difficulty of continually coming up with new backgrounds. Nice. Do you have a favorite windsock / enclosure for outdoor microphones that may be subject to strong wind blown rain If equipment gets really wet, how do you dry it out and how long do you tend to wait before powering it up in case water has got into switches, transformers, connectors, under chips, saturated the circuit board substrate. (long spell with dehumidifier / water displacing fluid perhaps) Any stories about buying powerful magnets off ebay etc and having them stick together, or to other packages, maybe to the inside of house mail box (All as I have experienced and been puzzled as to how they actually reached my house and the immense chaos they must have produced in their journey). Can you use an ioniser or similar to charge the spray from a whoosher prior to ignition and see the effect when aimed at a grounded (or opposite polarity) object and ignited... a T or donut shaped whoosh perhaps? An ionizer in an inflated balloon near a grounded object burst by a whoosher might be adventurous! Can one of your super high voltage ladders be triggered to flash over / spark by a Whoosher? Any nice effects if you combine a Vape haze with an ioniser? perhaps a whoosher or woofler? Any favorite methods of getting a draw string through conduits (Compressed air / Vacuum cleaner suction maybe?) Do you get a vaguely air tight fit when wearing face masks or just allow air to leak through beard? Do you get glasses fogging-up when using a mask and how do you reduce it? When using thermal cameras, do you use any particular technique for avoiding erroneous readings from shiny surfaces or similar 'transmissive' problems? I find Subway flat bread 'Wraps' taste much better than their Subway bread rolls which have a rather odd taste and smell that I've never entirely got used to. A Toasted Vegie Wrap with melted cheese on peperoni plus all salads apart from Pickles and Jalapeños is a favorite I never get sick of. mmmSubway! the salads are always amazingly fresh, very good franchise standards! Got any recommended coatings, clear tape etc to stop water ingress into cheap (and expensive) solar lights?

2021-09-07 09:26:12 +0000 UTCHave you seen the evolution of the LED neon? I have seen it being sold on Aliexpress and it now comes with different shaped light guides for directional light output.
2021-09-07 09:03:56 +0000 UTCIs there a safe/proper way to build a protection circuit for devices that tend to blow the fuse on power-on? I have an old laser printer that tend to blow the fuse about 50% of the times it's turned on. I assume it's lacking or has an inadequate inrush current limiter. I don't want to open it up and modify it, so an external inrush protection unit would have been nice. Would such device even make sense?
2021-09-07 07:31:39 +0000 UTCHow would you solder terminals onto a piezo? And us there such thing as a conductive epoxy or glue?

2021-09-07 07:15:52 +0000 UTCThing is in a repair lab/workshop as you may have isolating transformer. As I used to show off cutting wires and holding live then joining live bare connections.

2021-09-07 07:10:48 +0000 UTCI've had a few 'tingles' off high voltages during my career. Do you think that having experienced a few shocks makes you more resistant to them? I had a colleague in a repair lab about 40 years ago who seemed almost immune and would grab live wires for 'fun'.

2021-09-07 06:28:48 +0000 UTCI've repaired a football subs-board (dry/broken joint, and replaced 2 x 6v lead acid batteries). The charger was lost, but a 12v supply fit the socket, and seemed to do the trick, but I was wondering whether it was likely that two 6v batteries in series would actually need more than 12v to charge them? Out of the box, both batteries were measuring at around 6.2v across the terminals with my multi-meter. I wasn't sure whether I was getting a higher reading than expected because there's no load, or whether it would really need more like 14v to charge properly? Any thoughts?

2021-09-07 06:23:16 +0000 UTCI’m interested to know what condition your flat was in after over a year of not being lived in? eg. Damp/vandalism/damage?
2021-09-07 05:36:54 +0000 UTCHow about any discussion on embedded projects? Anything Arduino-ish, even though I personally favor a good old PIC12/16 or ESP32 these days more than ATmel stuff. Xmas animation projects were cool in that regard.

2021-09-07 04:44:02 +0000 UTCI have heard you mention lock picking in the past, specifically LockPickingLawyer. Have you gotten into the hobby much at all or just experimenting? If so do you find it disturbing how insecure most locks are? I got into the hobby because of Bosnianbill, very skilled lock picker and one of the first lock picking visionaries on YouTube. He even inspired me to do lock picking on YouTube as well although it fizzled out because I didn’t have any more locks to pick and I was getting my career off the ground. I would like to get back into it but much like electronics it’s a very expensive hobby.
2021-09-07 03:30:54 +0000 UTCA plasma globe is in fact, an ionizer inside a globe full of noble gasses. If you stick a neon tube on the end of an ionizer needle, it should also flicker, or glow dimly. The glowing filaments visible from a high-powered ozone generator's electrodes is the same visible discharge in ordinary air.

2021-09-07 01:08:58 +0000 UTCBend the tab back to 90 degrees as close to the weld(s) as possible. Pinch the strip as close to the battery as you can with pliers. Now start twisting slowly clockwise and counter clockwise (to the battery top/bottom) starting with a 5 to10 degree rocking rotation and slowly increase as the weld loosens. This procedure may take between 20 to 30 twisting cycles to break the weld, but 90+ % of the time will yield a very clean removal of the joining strip. Further, I have found that folding 0.25 to 0.3 inch (6.5 to 7.5mm) of the strip over itself 2 times makes for a adequate + button in devices that need that extra bit of contact metal.

2021-09-07 00:39:32 +0000 UTCWhat are your thoughts on everthing moving into microcontrollers and software? It helps make it easy for cottage industry / "maker" types to put together products quickly, but ultimately reduces the maintainability into the future.

2021-09-06 23:57:57 +0000 UTCI didn't spot those. Normally a little flag appears for a superchat above the chat window, and they will stay there for a time based on their value. I'm not sure if the smaller contributions just appear in the chat itself, so would be easy to miss if they happened while I wasn't looking. I'll try to keep my eye on the chat more in the future, but it can be very distracting when I'm talking about a specific thing.

2021-09-06 23:39:43 +0000 UTCHave you got any tricks or advice for sourcing rare or obsolete parts?
2021-09-06 23:31:12 +0000 UTCAs one that has suffered a small fire in my "shop" hobby/man-cave, I can recommend that method for clearing out old abandoned, nearly-abandoned, forgotten-neglected hobby clutter. Smoke damage is 1000 times worse than a small fire inside a closed room! Or so I've recently come to learn.

2021-09-06 22:53:25 +0000 UTCI have a 12v motor and a battery 12v of course, I need to set the system up to use near water what is the safest way to do this and would I need a cut off between the motor and the battery, the motor drives a propeller any ideas, thanks Clive.

2021-09-06 22:43:29 +0000 UTCWould you ever consider doing videos about more retro technology? You did one about a vintage security camera and it was fascinating. I work at an auction and forever see old tech that I think you could do a great tear down video with.

2021-09-06 22:19:17 +0000 UTC-Thanks to you I bought my very first ozone air purifier( the white charging one for fridges) I've noticed it smells similar to the plasma globe lamp. Are they similar? -Second, can we get access to older SNC streams here on Patreon?
2021-09-06 22:18:32 +0000 UTCIs there a good way to stop piling on side-hobbies and still feel like I'm progressing in each? Essentially, I have a hobby hoarding problem and don't want to give up on any of them, and I bet a lot of us here feel similarly. Cheers!
2021-09-06 22:12:29 +0000 UTCI live on a bridgeless island as well (Vashon Island, near Seattle). Quite a lot less remote than the Isle of Man, but I'm always fascinated by the challenges faced by living on an island. We have some here: delivery of large items; lack of enough postal carriers as people order online more; power outages. As a maker on IoM, what are a couple such challenges you've tackled over the years that you wouldn't have had on the mainland? Are there any that you've found insurmountable and just have to work around? Have you found advantages to being a maker on an island?

2021-09-06 21:52:14 +0000 UTCReusing 18650s from battery packs, any tips on dealing with welded nickel strips? I’ve been grabbing the ends and peeling them back slowly, and it was kind of working. Then I did one which let out a hiss when the weld popped … which is a nice sound when you’re opening an MRE ration, but I’m guessing not for lithium ion batteries. It was long dead and nothing happened, but it made me think there must be a better way. Any suggestions.
