Fly chopping electric toadstool

Another of these dubious devices that may catch some flies, but probably not the mosquitos they claim.

I wonder how many people have bought things like this in the belief it will protect them from mosquitos, and have then suffered the consequences.

Nice enough case and fan assembly though.

Yeah, it looks a bit rough.

Big Clive

It looks like they used wood screws to mount the fan. An odd choice.

It's not a gay thing. The whole pink thing started when the power supply of a set of pink LEDs detonated forcibly in my hand, and I realised that electrically dangerous things are even better when they are a girlie pink colour.

Big Clive

I noticed that some advertise doing that, but possibly with higher power UV sources. Even then I'm not convinced they can put out a significant amount of CO2.

Big Clive

The idea of making it into an ozone unit did cross my mind.

Big Clive

I think uncle Clive is such a fun-guy.

Some of these really are supposed to work with mosquitos, the UV leds are for photocatalysis, not to attract the bugs. In a genuine device, there should be white TiO2 paint where the leds shine. The heat from the unit combined with the little extra CO2 made by breaking down random organic stuff around in the air is supposed to attract the mossies! Once they get curious, the fan does the rest!

William Taylor

its cute.. could so use the case/frame for a ozone machine ;)

It reminds me of the high powered mains powered units you used to see in food establishments hanging on the walls. They had quiet bright uv lights and did work. Fly Zappers I think they were called.

Doh! I've just worked out that the pink theme to the channel is a subtle hint?!

Vinegar and baking powder in a cap inside the base to create carbon dioxide.

I have one almost exactly like this, but underside of the cap in different, it is pink and 120V powered. The LEDs are dotted around the outside edge and lost most of their brightness within 6 months. Replaced them with 8 pack of 10W modules running at about a half watt. The fan died in about a year. Exchanged it for a fancy PC fan. It works pretty ok. Certain flies, moths are mostly what it's getting. The larger biting mosquitoes we have in NA do get trapped in it. The smaller non-native mosquitoes appear to be unaffected by nearly everything.
