Bluetooth LED controller

I was looking for 5V 5050 LED tape and it was actually easier to get it with a controller bundled in.

The interesting thing about this astonishingly minimalist design is the microcontroller.

Am I right to be so cynical of the security risks associated with random stuff like this?

U should show the music feature aswell just add it in The end mb

Yeah, some things just don't need to be bluetooth. However, I think the bigger risk here is the random app on your phone. Much much easier to steal some juicy data that way.

I hate those controllers. I created some photography lighting using a controller like this, it was hit and miss that the app connected, sometime needing a complete remove/re-install of the app and sometimes they just stopped connecting. Then you have the security issues of the app itself. I would only ever use the app on an old phone that had been factory reset. All in all a complete waste. If I were to do it again, I'd use an ESP32 dev board and neopixel tape, although I never did find a power supply for 100 neopixels at 100% brightness, that's around 5-6amps....

I wouldn't even install a unknown app on my phone.

Well now, Bluetooth. I have had no end of headaches from the technology. As an implementor and end-user. Let's start with what SHOULD work: end user. It DOESN'T work. My fitbit connects only around 50% of the time. My car connects around 90% of the time. My freebie JVC speaker connects 100% of the time. The fitbit is particularly irksome. Why is this?! Bluetooth needs to reach three nines - 99.9% reliability - before I'll promote it. A client once demonstrated some Bluetooth function to me. It was a remote viewer, essentially. It took him ages before he got a stable connection. "What's it for?" I said. Silence. We Aspies can be like that.

You mentioned the boot pin being connected to the green pin and that reminded me that the WiFi ones I have flash the green if you sucsessfully hard reset it by cycling the power a couple of times.

"BT app wants to access your contacts and media storage."

Hagen

No, it's not about changing the light color. It's about an over-powered controller that could be re-programmed (flash memory) to do something else than intended. Like connecting to a laptop as a BT mouse or keyboard and do something on it. Or sniffing data from other BT devices. BT can reach far enough to reach a relay/storage device outside your flat/house.

Hagen

No, your comment is not cynical, but well-observed. Source: worked at a smart card company and then later at a company making embedded system debuggers.

I wouldn’t worry about the Bluetooth being insecure. I worry about the app on your phone sucking all it data out.

I had this exact strip two of them had dead controllers on arrival so I don't trust them full stop

I'm not convinced that hackers are roaming around sniffing for bluetooth data connections so they can change the colour of your LED strings lol.

evilution

I don't trust Bluetooth, turn it on to use it and off again. I got a phone virus via Bluetooth by walking near someone else that had it. Years ago so tech has no doubt improved but I'm a very mistrusting type lol

I have a couple of "Chinese" controllers myself and they are all based on an ESP So I have wondered the same thing.
