Not much choice in lights this year

The pandemic has really limited choice of Poundland stuff on the Isle of Man.  I got some of these lights to see if the design has evolved much over the years.

It has a strange design flaw on both styles of PCB that they use.

Ah, nice to see you use percussive desoldering, I thought I was the only one ;-)

Gordo

Just looking on eBay there are a whole range of empty whisky bottle led fairy lights. Shame no one knows someone that can get interesting empty whisky bottles and make some lights from them huh?

Mark Holder

Another light that looks like the vile Fat Bastard had after stealing Austin Powers mojo!

There's a serious problem getting Chinese goods over to here, not least because of the recent canal blockage, and it's affecting Poundland too.

It's good to see Andy back.

Now I would have thought that inductor was just a resistor that ate all the pies! 🤣

Dr Andy Hill

I thought I'd mention Photonicinduction posted an update, including about new cameras and PC build for editing. Glad to see him back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUq0NVO0Q2M

I remember recently asking B.C. for tips on soldering, thinking that all my soldering skills had gone out the window, but in not realizing that I was facing awful lead free solder joints.

Andrew Donaldson

That was fun! Thanks Clive you rock man! I think these are the only solar lights I'm seeing on the shelves here my way too.

Michael Thompson

Please feel free to rant about lead free solder as much as you like. It is an abomination! After 40 years of soldering, with little or no problem using the good old Multicore solder, I now find I'm reaching for flux pens, turning up iron temperatures and waiting for heat to migrate to the joint and still having dry joint failures. I have to keep my soldering gun handy so that i can get enough heat into joints on larger PC pads where leaded solder would be quite happy with the 25 watt Solon iron.
