The big (controversial) ozone video

This video is definitely going to upset the anti-ozone department of the flat-earther brigade.

It's main purpose is to avoid having to repeat the science of ozone each time I feature an ozone producing device.  But it also tries to battle the huge amount of propaganda on the fashionista "health" websites.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ymcJ9qKC7I

Let me know what you think about it.

I may have misunderstood the last bit of the EPA rant, but it's OK, because the rest of their science in that area is completely retarded and not befitting to an organisation of their status.  On a plus note NASA more than made up for it with tons of genuine and well researched data.

The big (controversial) ozone video

Comments

There’s a storm about to happen here. Going to go and sniff some ozone.

Nic Higham

I've done a bit more research and from a couple of papers I read they suggest spores need to be exposed to ozone in high concentration for >28hrs to have a negative effect, and the effect is minimal. Low concentrations actually benefit the spores germination. So it looks like HEPA is the way to go

Simon Howroyd

Clive et al. Advice if I may please? I've started a new hobby growing gourmet mushrooms. It relies upon having clean air, and I have Trichoderma (green mold) spores everywhere. Even in my still air box. Despite thorough cleaning. I'm thinking of getting an air purifier for either the room or a smaller one for inside the still air box (basically a big plastic box with hand holes.) Should I go down the ozone, negative ion, or HEPA filter route? Obviously cheapness will win. I'm tempted by the small rechargable ozone fridge devices but unsure of the actual efficacy of ozone with respect to time it takes to be effective. I don't mind a high concentration inside the box since I won't have my face in it, but it may degrade the plastic? Any thoughts or discussion much appreciated!

Simon Howroyd

I work for the EPA and I say your right!!!

For a next/future video, please describe how to make a ozone generator suitable for, say, 50m². Then we can build it, and run it on a 2min-on/Nmin-off schedule, if the room is smaller. I realize that you have a lot of ozone videos. It would probably be enough to reference the best ones 🙂

Those are very cheap on eBay. Mostly air inside with a tiny potted ioniser module and a simple PCB just for the two LEDs.

Big Clive

Similar, but that unit has a single polarity on needles behind a metal plate. I have one here.

Big Clive

Is this the unit inside a Sharp Plasmacutter? https://www.ebay.com/itm/143785902414

Dankie \ Thank you. I've been considering getting some of these for the very reasons you mentioned, this has convinced me to do so now. in the process of looking for a device I came across this very "safe" looking one that has its emitter hanging out the front. https://www.banggood.com/Portable-Air-Purifier-Cleaner-Negative-Ionizer-Generator-Remove-Formaldehyde-Smoke-Dust-Purification-p-1778872.html

The Honeywell electronic air cleaner on my furnace produced a tiny bit of ozone when the cells were re-installed after cleaning, and disappeared as it did its job of filtering out pollutants. Very effective, but quite a chore to maintain.

Frank

Any electrical arcing creates ozone, so there would be some generated by the dodgem car collectors and arcing to the metal floor. Another part if that smell is often burning oil.

Big Clive

love the video very informative i don't know if i am rite in saying this but i use smell ozone at the fairground on the dodgems as i remember mind you the old bran ant what it use to be LOL

Mort

Ozone water treatment is a pretty common thing. When you use an aquarium style air stone to fizz ozonated bubbles through water it has a strong sterilising effect. eBay is full of vegetable cleaning ozone bubblers.

Big Clive

I'd like to know more about how this one works, but don't fancy spending €399 to find out. https://www.tank-o3.nl/en Aside from wondering how well it actually mixes with the water in a tank, I'm also unsure if it's even a good idea - reactions with other things in water might not be desirable (bromide?) and what about degrading the tank, pipework, etc?

David Reader

It's nothing to do with disability. To retard means to slow down or hold back. In this instance it means it is bad information that holds back knowledge and progress.. It's actually disappointing that a google search for the word prioritises its use as derogatory slang for someone with learning difficulties. It's a common term used in technology. Your local Subway sandwich shop has a machine called a retarder that holds back the activity of the bread yeast until it is needed. Search for dough retarder.

Big Clive

In the video I do say 0.000001% (10 parts per billion). I calculated the breath size as a maximum of 1 litre as that is a typical breath even though the lungs have higher capacity. 1 cubic metre of air contains approximately 10 septillion gas molecules.

Big Clive

The only problem is that about 90% of the people out there arent really good educated in what we call in germany "MINT" (maths, informatics, natural/ general science, technique/ engineering) ...

Dominik Mueller

According to the NASA site the concentration at ground level is 0.000001 (one more zero after the comma than you say). I'm wondering at your maths though. 0.0001% (the wrong percentage) means that in 1 mole of gas (24 liters at 20C), which contains Avogadro's number of molecules (6.0222e+23) there are about 6e+16 ozone molecules (divide by 10,000,000). Say with a lung capacity of 6 liters (a really deep breath) means a quarter mole, so that means 1.5e+16 ozone molecules. So not the number one with 22 zeroes, but a one with 16 zeroes. However it's way past my bedtime so maybe I made an error somewhere...

Paul Slootman

Thank you Clive, I have a Ozone generator in my fridge now and it has indeed helped keep stuff fresh. I do not currently have one in my flat, but I open the fridge so presumably some escapes :) I will maybe take a punt on one for the flat if I can find something not to powerful from my mate Ali at a certain Chinese online shopping site. :)

Broxie

Taken aback, by the word 'retarded', it belongs to previous centuries. As a disability rights campaigner, I find it abhorant

Thank you Big Clive. 🖖

Ozone S.

I am using your "no shit, Sherlock" sound byte for my text tone. LOL

Charles Bruckner

This video was great - and you seem to have managed to pre-load the YouTube comments with your sane followers, and not the "ozone kills people instantly" crowd, so maybe it will actually convince some people.

Charles

California seems to have blanket banned all ozone devices as being harmful. And bizarrely, Canada may have made a similar decision.

Big Clive

It's worth exploring the full website www.nasa.gov

Big Clive

That's weird. I've never seen one with magnets. It looks like an ionic ozone generator with the rings possibly being used for their low corroding potential. The strong corona indicates a higher ozone output than a traditional ioniser.

Big Clive

Good timing. What was her reaction? Hope everything goes well. Medical science has come a long way.

Big Clive

I could tell you in advance that it would work. The effect of active components in air as produced by these units will damage the crown structures on the viruses and interfere with their operation.

Big Clive

Great video and very informative. I do wonder if the EPA are taking their lead from California. Many products sold in California seem to come with scary warnings about their cancer causing products... I think the best one I've seen was with the Brinks Padlock - which up was known to cause cancer.... Sheesh

Rik Kershaw-Moore

Michael, FWIW a friend also suffered significant wetware I/O issues and even some bad sectors in his headdrive after similar treatment. It took some time to rebuild his system but he went on to achieve a high level of throughput for the rest of his career. Being obsolete today he enjoys a comfy retirement in the country.

Bill Kerr

I would love a link to the NASA research about ozone!

Circuitmike

I can't fault the narrative - it tells it how it is without the woke namby pamby bullshit approach that seems to be the norm now for the easily offended snowflakes that have caused so much damage to free speech ! Keep up the excellent info vids alongside the usual highly entertaining banter, and we will continue to support you. This is an edit after writing the above, I followed the link and watched all their vijeos and this one sparked my interest :https://www.bosch-home.co.uk/store/plasma-freshup/how-to-use-freshup-on-fabrics?intcid=TextileRefresher%7EFreshUp_Overview%7EWebsite%7EContentTeaser%7EProduct_Details#/Togglebox=10616491-10616604-1/Togglebox=10616491-10616604-2/Togglebox=10616491-10616604-3/Togglebox=10616491-10616604-4/Togglebox=10616491-10616604-5/

I have this ionizer for over 10yrs. Instead of just rings, it have ring magnets. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1zAPmXiQC7nWVtm-dtaRnnfngU7UNPjJg?usp=sharing Works wonders imo.

Aleksander

Talking about Corona - our Sun has quite a large Corona too, only visible at eclipses, but looking quite "Crowny" with a little imagination 🤔

Zeedijk Mike

This is a very good and informative video. I doubt that it will "convince" (m)any anti Ozone fanatics though. They tend not to listen to/accept any information that goes against their "beliefs". But if this video can just convince a few, it's a step in the right direction.

Zeedijk Mike

Best wishes Michael, that is a unique ozone story for sure. I occasionally smell ozone as well laying here in a bone marrow transplant unit for the last two weeks. I think it's the super duper air filters above my bed. Clive gave me my most humourous moment here in the last stream. I had him on the tv when a nurse came in just as he went into his falsetto rant "Oh! You shouldn't do that, you'll get cancer...... Fuck em!"

Jim

Sharp tested a Plasmacluster on COVID-19 https://global.sharp/corporate/news/200907-a.html

Earl Plotner

The "chesty" bit is a bit concerning. These units are intriguing, but their output is what I would call "whole house". Considerably higher than traditional ionisers.

Big Clive

I can't tell my ozone story because of the I/O buffers F my typing sucks in my brain due to brain cancer and I have a great ozone story too. GODDSDAMMIT. That's basically I'm suffering from: wetware I/O buffering issues...will attempt to reduce baud rate: When I was getting radiation treatment I noticed a smell (yeah I though wondered it was my brain) but the second day I realized it was ozone! -So when I gave my theory to my doctor that ionizing radiation was splitting some of the air molecules and creating ozone in my sinuses my doctor gave me a odd look and he said, "that is the current theory". BOOM yeah... I told you it's only I/O buffering ... Of course this took like 40 minutes to type... Much love technical family. :D

Michael Thompson

Yes, that's fine.

Big Clive

It did rant at the end. Maybe I should just have said that the EPA needs to redo their ozone information as it takes a very negative stance to a natural component of air. That's the peril of doing unscripted videos. The only script was the bit at the start with numerical data.

Big Clive

I actually hit the limit of text in the description. I wanted to add a lot more.

Big Clive

Do you mind if I use your video to train people please I work with UVC robots

Might be worth while pinning a comment with a link to the relevant NASA page so people can find the research easily. Otherwise it's a good educational video.

It's £249.99 for god's sake. At least they don't charge for delivery.

I got one of the triangular units last week (ordered yellow/green as that was cheapest, but received a black one). It's been running for 5 days now on one charge and still going, even though the blue LED is quite ferocious and could do with some taming down.

Paul Slootman

A great video I use ozone generators for last 20years in my bread cupboard., veggies cupboard and fridge which works well in keeping mould out. Also use to get rid of smells from rooms.. Like Clive said small traces are good that's why I have many units in areas of need.

N. Shaun Tremayne

I think this is a great summary video Clive. I like the introduction to what is Ozone. And the assurance that a corona discharge has nothing to do with corona virus. Personally I have one of those with the strange warning light that tells you that the input voltage is low. It produces a good breeze and a nice sparkly corona. There is no ozone smell, however when I first started using it on the high setting it made me feel a bit chesty, anyway I soon got used to it. EPA woo science eh?

Dr Andy Hill

I think this a really good explanation, especially the first half (it gets a wee bit ranty towards the end, and is a tiny bit long — but just as I was thinking “I wonder how much more there is” it wraps up and stops). I’m sure it’ll be click bait for the anti-ozone folk, but I think you addressed all the common points of the uninformed. Ewen

Ewen McNeill

Great video. Consumer giants Bosch have used ozone in their high end washing machines for a while, but their latest gizmo is really interesting - it’s a personal plasma generator which removes odours from clothing. The marketing blurb avoids scary words like ‘ozone’ and ‘ionisation’ but it’s clear what’s going on. Can’t help thinking that they took their inspiration from a certain big bearded Scottish chap’s UV ‘sterilising now’ routine. Looks like a near field device, but would be interested to know much ambient ozone it produces….they do talk about a ‘smell’ during use. Would love to see to see a teardown of one of these units too, but they are pricey : https://www.bosch-home.co.uk/bosch-innovations/freshup-fabric-refresher

Howard

Hmmm.. Might want to post sources of information in the description with links to studies or official websites.

Bungeeskunk

I look forward to testing out some rarely used profanities and berating the idiots in the comments.

evilution

Great stuff Clive. I was in a doctor's waiting room yesterday. Every 5 minutes or so some mysterious thing in the ceiling cavity above me would make a fizzing noise for about 30 seconds then shut off. It made me think of your ozone videos. :)
