I have had fibre for 3years now, son is gaming whilst I am watching youtube and wife is on netflix, regularly getting minimum of 60+ mbps download and 16-20 upload ,you wont be disappointed !

Good to hear you're finally getting decent broadband. When lockdown started, I ended up sacking BT mid-contract and they agreed. It wasn't just the slow speed, it was terrible reliability. I went back to Virgin who are expensive but at least reliable - this time. It isn't always the case.

There are several fibre links. I'm more concerned about Starlink's IOM based uplink possibly guzzling bandwidth.

The resolution is set by YouTube's app. I'm not sure if it will switch to 1080P when there is a faster connection.

The jitter/latency should also be a lot better. I currently depend on two 4G connections, picked up from two different Three masts using directional antennas. One mast gives me great speed, sometimes over 150Mbps down and 20Mbps up, but with terrible latency spikes, randomly spiking over 400ms without any load. I use it as my main connection. My second 4G connection peaks around 20Mbps down and 10Mbps up, but the latency is consistently around 40ms, so I run our VoIP # (ported from former 4Mbps DSL copper line that had expensive line rental). No sign of fibre for years to come.

Having fiber is great! Glad you’re getting the upgrade. I hope everything goes smoothly.

I'm sure with a usb 3.2 10Gb (gen 2) to 10GbE, it will rocket. Nearly 1GB/s means a full movie is downloaded really quick.

This is great news Clive. I have the BT 900/110 service in the UK which is the only internet service I have ever had that consistently goes faster than advertised. I'm not even talking the sync speeds either, Speedtest gives me a rock solid 930 down and 115 up without fail. Very impressive. I live down a private road about 500m from the main road so had to twist Openreach's arm to pull fibre all the way to me but they were very good and did as they promised. On the contrary, I work in Geneva and have an apartment there. My provider gives me 10Gbit/s symmetrical 😮 Sadly my computer there doesn't have a 10GigE port so I can't use the faster speed...! :( Speedtest there pegs at 980Mbit/s both ways which I'm pretty sure it's as fast as the Ethernet port on the computer goes. Anyways, enjoy your new fibre - It is an absolute game changer...!!!

I've been on FTTP for over 7 years now - living in a BT trials area. I only subscribe to an 80/20 service - (cheapskate) but it's reliable and all a family of 4 need really. You'll be pleasantly surprised for a few month until you get used to the speeds. But it's the reliability that is worth it.

Treat yourself to a nice router as well. It does make a difference with an increasing number of clients hooked up.

The violet ray was very popular. It was in the early era of electricity when it was claimed it could cure absolutely anything. In reality the main benefit was the ozone produced at the point of contact. I have a few violet ray units here.

Ironically it's going to cost LESS because I've had to have two other services to be able to guarantee a connection. Now my phone will act as the backup 4G service if the fibre goes down.

Assuming they're a competent provider, you'll love it. We got fibre some years ago and now have 300Mbps down and 150Mbps up. There's no technical reason for the asymmetric speeds anymore, but at least it's fast enough that I don't care about it anymore. C.

12 week lead time? That's rather a long wait! I'm glad you're getting it though. It will be worth it for faster uploads and smoother live streams.

Just don't have them lay it diagonally 2" under your front lawn at dead of night, as Virgin did with ours. I cut through the cable with a spade when tending flower beds.

Wide screen BC ? I live in a flat a(almost called it an apartment sound lie Hysinth Bucket ) and no one else wants fibre access. Miserable bastards wont fit it just for 1 person. Do they know WHO I am? Oh that’s right nobody. 🤣

Congrats. Our rural electric coop (thanks, FDR!) has been pulling fiber to members for 2-3 years - got mine at the end of 2019. Even at 100 Mbit/s both ways it's better than the Wi-Max service we had or the DSL before that. And it's cheaper. I can get 1 Gbit/s but the extra US$20/mo isn't worth it for my use.

Likewise. My provider can't even do a T1. Their DSL gets about 100 kbps. A cell phone with 50' tower is the only thing that can get you a couple megabits around here.

Ah Clive, if only I'd known... My grandfather, was gassed in WWI and subsequently became what would now be known as a 'health freak'. A notorious possession of his was the so-called 'violet ray machine', a wooden box with some sort of high-voltage generator and a variety of sinister hand-blown glass tubes that, under the correct conditions, emitted a plasmatic glow. Lord only knows that it was supposed to do or the health risks involved, but if I still had it I'd send it to you. But I don't. I do still have his collection of D'Oyly Carte Gilbert and Sullivan 78s though.

To be honest, 1080p wouldn't be pointless. It allows for a higher bitrate, meaning less pixelation in fast moving scenes (such as woofles). ;)

Hey, that means less hickups, and less data issues. Maybe try for 720p60 when you get it? Going to 1080p would be pointless, though more frames means better look-back at whoofles and other uncanny happenings.
