Fibre optic connection booked
Added 2021-07-07 20:55:59 +0000 UTCIf all goes to plan, and allowing for a 12 week lead time, I'll be getting fibre optic in. That should hopefully provide smoother live streams.
Today I also ordered a really vintage ozone generator from the 1920's for exploration. It looks suitably wooden and dangerous.

Fibre all the way I believe.

2021-07-11 16:20:39 +0000 UTCI wonder if Clive is getting a real fibre to the house or VDSL ?
Nuts 'n' Proud
2021-07-10 12:04:10 +0000 UTCI have had fibre for 3years now, son is gaming whilst I am watching youtube and wife is on netflix, regularly getting minimum of 60+ mbps download and 16-20 upload ,you wont be disappointed !

2021-07-10 11:23:40 +0000 UTCEnjoy.

2021-07-10 00:56:28 +0000 UTCGood to hear you're finally getting decent broadband. When lockdown started, I ended up sacking BT mid-contract and they agreed. It wasn't just the slow speed, it was terrible reliability. I went back to Virgin who are expensive but at least reliable - this time. It isn't always the case.
Mike Page
2021-07-09 20:38:42 +0000 UTCThere are several fibre links. I'm more concerned about Starlink's IOM based uplink possibly guzzling bandwidth.
Big Clive
2021-07-09 04:14:58 +0000 UTCThe resolution is set by YouTube's app. I'm not sure if it will switch to 1080P when there is a faster connection.
Big Clive
2021-07-09 04:13:38 +0000 UTCThe jitter/latency should also be a lot better. I currently depend on two 4G connections, picked up from two different Three masts using directional antennas. One mast gives me great speed, sometimes over 150Mbps down and 20Mbps up, but with terrible latency spikes, randomly spiking over 400ms without any load. I use it as my main connection. My second 4G connection peaks around 20Mbps down and 10Mbps up, but the latency is consistently around 40ms, so I run our VoIP # (ported from former 4Mbps DSL copper line that had expensive line rental). No sign of fibre for years to come.

2021-07-08 22:29:07 +0000 UTCDoes your camera put out 1080? Would be great if we can get 1080 live streams.

2021-07-08 20:47:05 +0000 UTCThen you find the next bottleneck is the subsea fibre off the island 🤣

2021-07-08 16:56:01 +0000 UTCHaving fiber is great! Glad you’re getting the upgrade. I hope everything goes smoothly.
2021-07-08 14:51:24 +0000 UTCI'm sure with a usb 3.2 10Gb (gen 2) to 10GbE, it will rocket. Nearly 1GB/s means a full movie is downloaded really quick.

2021-07-08 12:02:55 +0000 UTCThis is great news Clive. I have the BT 900/110 service in the UK which is the only internet service I have ever had that consistently goes faster than advertised. I'm not even talking the sync speeds either, Speedtest gives me a rock solid 930 down and 115 up without fail. Very impressive. I live down a private road about 500m from the main road so had to twist Openreach's arm to pull fibre all the way to me but they were very good and did as they promised. On the contrary, I work in Geneva and have an apartment there. My provider gives me 10Gbit/s symmetrical 😮 Sadly my computer there doesn't have a 10GigE port so I can't use the faster speed...! :( Speedtest there pegs at 980Mbit/s both ways which I'm pretty sure it's as fast as the Ethernet port on the computer goes. Anyways, enjoy your new fibre - It is an absolute game changer...!!!

2021-07-08 09:41:10 +0000 UTCI've been on FTTP for over 7 years now - living in a BT trials area. I only subscribe to an 80/20 service - (cheapskate) but it's reliable and all a family of 4 need really. You'll be pleasantly surprised for a few month until you get used to the speeds. But it's the reliability that is worth it.
2021-07-08 09:22:17 +0000 UTCGood luck man! I remember when the 300 baud modem arrived. It was twice than the 150 can you see??? CAN YOU SEE?
Michael Thompson
2021-07-08 07:47:33 +0000 UTCAdmit it... it's a Jacob's Ladder for your laboratory... :) Actually enjoy the fibre experience.

2021-07-08 07:05:46 +0000 UTCTreat yourself to a nice router as well. It does make a difference with an increasing number of clients hooked up.
Immit81
2021-07-08 05:54:37 +0000 UTCIt's not going to be as fast as that, but it has to be better than what I have now.
Big Clive
2021-07-08 03:34:18 +0000 UTCThe pictures look suitably dangerous.
Big Clive
2021-07-08 03:32:50 +0000 UTCThe violet ray was very popular. It was in the early era of electricity when it was claimed it could cure absolutely anything. In reality the main benefit was the ozone produced at the point of contact. I have a few violet ray units here.
Big Clive
2021-07-08 03:31:40 +0000 UTCTheoretically 20Mbit up and 100Mbit down. But I'll only know when it's in.
Big Clive
2021-07-08 03:30:15 +0000 UTCIronically it's going to cost LESS because I've had to have two other services to be able to guarantee a connection. Now my phone will act as the backup 4G service if the fibre goes down.
Big Clive
2021-07-08 03:28:23 +0000 UTCAssuming they're a competent provider, you'll love it. We got fibre some years ago and now have 300Mbps down and 150Mbps up. There's no technical reason for the asymmetric speeds anymore, but at least it's fast enough that I don't care about it anymore. C.

2021-07-08 01:42:45 +0000 UTCThis sign from AvE seems appropriate: https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/1028490676/take-heed-antique-warning-label?ref=shop_home_recs_7&crt=1
2021-07-08 00:52:12 +0000 UTC12 week lead time? That's rather a long wait! I'm glad you're getting it though. It will be worth it for faster uploads and smoother live streams.

2021-07-08 00:22:57 +0000 UTCHow long after installation will you wait to take the carrier’s network interface device to bits? :-)

2021-07-08 00:16:18 +0000 UTCGreat news, I hope the installation goes smoothly.

2021-07-08 00:04:55 +0000 UTCcool, now clive can set up a permanent livestream camera on his bench so patrons can tune in and see what he is fiddling with!

2021-07-08 00:04:08 +0000 UTC10 Gbps symmetrical! no more bandwidth issues lol

2021-07-07 23:35:19 +0000 UTCJust don't have them lay it diagonally 2" under your front lawn at dead of night, as Virgin did with ours. I cut through the cable with a spade when tending flower beds.

2021-07-07 22:42:44 +0000 UTCGood luck with the fibre :) I have it running along my boundary but can't get connected without paying 30k+ for some sort of junction box !
2021-07-07 22:38:52 +0000 UTCOoh, any hundred-year-old equipment sounds exciting!

2021-07-07 22:33:20 +0000 UTC1920's ? Wow I'm looking forward to seeing that - with or without fiber. Love old electronics (and machines)

2021-07-07 22:10:22 +0000 UTCWide screen BC ? I live in a flat a(almost called it an apartment sound lie Hysinth Bucket ) and no one else wants fibre access. Miserable bastards wont fit it just for 1 person. Do they know WHO I am? Oh that’s right nobody. 🤣

2021-07-07 22:01:23 +0000 UTCAwesome! It's going to be amazing!

2021-07-07 21:57:58 +0000 UTCCongrats. Our rural electric coop (thanks, FDR!) has been pulling fiber to members for 2-3 years - got mine at the end of 2019. Even at 100 Mbit/s both ways it's better than the Wi-Max service we had or the DSL before that. And it's cheaper. I can get 1 Gbit/s but the extra US$20/mo isn't worth it for my use.
Peter Laws
2021-07-07 21:33:26 +0000 UTCGreat news on the fiber connection! I've had it for several years and can't imagine living without it, especially during the quarantine.
2021-07-07 21:27:13 +0000 UTCMy fibre is an excellent thing - but took 7 months :)
Steve Lemon
2021-07-07 21:26:25 +0000 UTCLikewise. My provider can't even do a T1. Their DSL gets about 100 kbps. A cell phone with 50' tower is the only thing that can get you a couple megabits around here.
castirondude
2021-07-07 21:20:49 +0000 UTCGREAT! I called by provider and they said I have better chances of getting dial up than fiber.
2021-07-07 21:16:14 +0000 UTCAh Clive, if only I'd known... My grandfather, was gassed in WWI and subsequently became what would now be known as a 'health freak'. A notorious possession of his was the so-called 'violet ray machine', a wooden box with some sort of high-voltage generator and a variety of sinister hand-blown glass tubes that, under the correct conditions, emitted a plasmatic glow. Lord only knows that it was supposed to do or the health risks involved, but if I still had it I'd send it to you. But I don't. I do still have his collection of D'Oyly Carte Gilbert and Sullivan 78s though.
2021-07-07 21:11:53 +0000 UTCNice one! I'm jealous..

2021-07-07 21:05:01 +0000 UTCTo be honest, 1080p wouldn't be pointless. It allows for a higher bitrate, meaning less pixelation in fast moving scenes (such as woofles). ;)
2021-07-07 21:01:24 +0000 UTCHey, that means less hickups, and less data issues. Maybe try for 720p60 when you get it? Going to 1080p would be pointless, though more frames means better look-back at whoofles and other uncanny happenings.
NightshadeLenar
2021-07-07 21:00:12 +0000 UTCI just hope it works for you Clive, best off luck.
2021-07-07 20:59:50 +0000 UTCNice. Wish OpenReach would get their finger out here. Not even fttc on my street.

2021-07-07 20:59:07 +0000 UTCGreat news, a big investment but hopefully well worth it! I haven't been able to attend the streams lately, but I'm still kicking. Hoping to have a chance to attend soon.
