Fibre (fiber) going in

The fibre is now on the wall and the associated equipment will be installed tomorrow if all goes to plan.

Not sure what effect that will have on streams yet, but it should hopefully make uploading videos a lot faster.

Fibre (fiber) going in

Comments

You should plenty fiber.

Michael Thompson

It is indeed the wedge of cheese upright style. The install happened a lot earlier than expected, so maybe they've just not set the connection option to the chosen level yet.

Big Clive

Just been speaking to my bosses son who happens to have been the young lad that installed your terminal for you. He says that the router you have is new one, he thinks it must be from Sure? anyways he said he thought he did do a speed test for 100mbps but some of the sure routers are fixed to 13mbps by default and you must call sure and and get them to wake up the 100mbps.

I got FTTH installed by Openreach after twisting their arm to pull it 500m down my driveway (semi rural). Signed up with BT and it's the only internet connection I have ever had that consistently outperforms the advertised speeds. Bought the 900/110 package and I consistently get 930/115. Epic.

Rupert Kent

Yes it will.

Big Clive

Which is why I have a backup 4G data plan.

Big Clive

Should. But so far download is almost, but not quite as fast as the old ADSL connection.

Big Clive

My baseball cap hides them outside.

Big Clive

I've done a test and the YouTube app I use to stream is still doing it at 720P.

Big Clive

13.7 download, 18.4 upload. Not great for a 100Mbit connection.

Big Clive

Alas, not my house.

Big Clive

It's the Patreon stream this week.

Big Clive

There are a few fibres across the sea. It's supposed to be 100Mbit, but is currently not even close to that. It wavers between 5 to 15% of that.

Big Clive

That's what I like to hear :) 😀 Speed wise, remember when you went from dialup to ADSL ? It's like that only x100. Streams will be great as your latency will drop like a stone and speeds you will love. A ping and tracert to a known site before and after will blow you away ! Have fun... I'm sure we will get a full report. 😀

It was Manx Telecom and both guys got beer tokens. (And offered tea/coffee.)

Big Clive

Except I think his house gets down to 4deg C lol

If they dig too many holes the whole island will sink

Mark Holder

Make the poor Engineer a Nice cuppa !!!! Anyone who works for Openreach needs it.... I worked for them years ago and I'm still in therapy 😬😟👹

@Clive, make sure your fiber modem is put somewhere frost free. I am serious. Those laser modules in the modem do not like operating temperatures below 0° C. Probably best to stay above 4° C.

Frank

It is probably a different house ;)

Frank

That sounds very promising. My mother alway says fiber is healthy for you.

Frank

I was under the impression that you lived in a moderately sized house, but the picture shows a small castle. Should we refer to you as Baron Clive instead of Big Clive ?

adrian

Would be great to have Fibre - who is provider ? I am thinking of getting Fibre when I go South to be with Dad (hopefully will get there before he passes). Anywho there is Fibre near to his home from Virgin but Son has Virgin in Derby and says it is not that great when multiple devices connected, Bandwidth throttling probably....NO Fibre to home where I am so max I can get is around 45MB down and 18MB Up and on my 4th BT Router in around 24 months !!

Robert

Hey look ...... it's Tom the Spark Nagy

You’re still faster than dialup, it’s live streamed. When the modems got reset🙈

Cerity

NBN? You have my deepest sympathy

Anita Davis

there's a disappointing lack of much in a fibre box, especially spicy things that go zing.

Anita Davis

Big Clive: "Evening all. I now have fiber!.....Let's take it to bits!"

Here in Aus they only run FibRe internet underground - so they had to dig trenches to my house...

Steve Lemon

I'm in a county of 35,000 souls, 392 sq. miles (1015.275 km2). What is this "Fiber" thing of which you speak so highly???

Mustafa's Fleas

I'm jealous. I'm in rural France - 1215 kilobits down and wait for it...... 315kilobits upload. I have to watch the stream at 144p.

Nuts 'n' Proud

I moved to bathgate two years ago. Broadband went from 3mbps on talk talk aDSL, to 30mbps on origin. vDSL, to 200mbps on Virgin fibre. It's unbearable to imagine being back on 3mbps again.

Pixscotland

And your point is... ? :-)

Does that mean the patreon stream will be the test run?

Jono Harley

Jealous. In the middle of a city of 8 million I can't get fiber.

Bill Kerr

it'll go bang!

Tim Albers

don't forget single point of failure :)

chris

Fiber! Uppercut!

mega

Should make a big difference in your neck of the woods.

Awesome beans!

Mike Page

Nice Clive! Hope it is coming here soon.

Hub Rijcks

Seen the lines man and had a good giggle about last Saturday stream

Glad to hear, Clive :) Hope the installation will be fast and smooth

Yes, a neat looking bungalow....

Andrew Donaldson

I feel some 4k livestreams are coming in the near future!

Lucas Illingworth

It'll be easier to tell that your eyebrows are gone! I always thought it'd be the foamy woofler that would get em.

Jim

More fiber in the diet is always good.. 😜

Lostngone

That is excellent news Clive, you will be amazed at the speeds you can get, especially during the silent hours, which is when you seem to be most active.- you will also be able to stream 4k videos as well as upload them super quick as well.

Mike Hughes

haha, I'm still working on sites where adsl is still current tech on openreach.

Chloe Cresswell

Apparently England is getting FTTP from BT over the next 10 years.

Dr Andy Hill

Waiting for the "Oy mate, you're doing that wrong" live stream.

AlfaGuy

Biggest change to the stream I can see is the supercomputer not eating all the bandwidth ;)

Chloe Cresswell

IOM is FTTP iirc

Chloe Cresswell

Are you getting fiber to the premises FTTP or just to the cabinet FTTC with a copper final connection to your house?

Dr Andy Hill

Most excellent event :)

chris

i know this is not your house clive but i spent over twenty years up and down pols and never without a full helmet with fully fitted chin strap. so if you fall it wont pop of when you hit the ground 😁

9 of 10 doctors agree that we don't get enough fiber.

Chris Parsons

Haha buncha perverts!

horrovac

Awesome! Not sure if I'm more jealous of your new fiber internet or your current view of that tradie. :P

Brooks Andersen

I'd say it looks like he's taking the pic from his house and towards another one. 🤷🏻‍♂️ He is BigClive for his height but maybe not several stories high. 😁

You're going to get "a reputation" if you start taking photos of workmen's' bums! ;-)

Nice house. 5 chimneys? Big Clive Towers!

Gadgetman

It's the reliability that you'll enjoy more. You quickly get used to the speed increase. Been on FTTP for 7 years and being a cheapskate only buy the 80/20Mbs service. It's only now showing its age with 4 adults who stream a lot .

In the ground is the usual way for FTTH/P in the U.K. but it could be Isle of Man is different or he’s getting FTTC which is over the existing telephone wires.

Let us know your speeds from www.testmy.net when it's done, this is a real world test 👍

Private Private

Excellent!

Jeff Larson

You're getting dangling cables for fiber? 😳 Didn't know they even did that. Over here in Norway it's pretty much always dug down into the ground. They're way too fragile to be exposed to the elements.

FTTC shouldn't normally need a fine lady or gentleman mounting the erect pole near your dwelling, so my bet's on the full fat FTTP!

Simon Casey

Impressed with your mansion in the background, Clive!

Ian Cooper

Happy for you Clive! Thanks to FDR's REA, my electricity comes from a coop. That coop started stringing fiber over their rights of way (poles, underground) and offering FTTH to members. US$55/mo 100Mbit/s, US$85/mo for gig. Symmetrical, no cap. Neat system, too. Single strand, so I immediately realized it was WDWM to get two channels (likely many more than that) but what I didn't realize until I dug was that this was a "passive optical net" (PON). There are passive splitters at the pole to each customer - no optical modules that need power. Pretty cool.

Peter Laws

Hopefully you’ll give us a heads up before the inaugural fibre stream.

Elliott Krimchansky

Nice!!! I FINALLY had fibre service installed recently. My only regret is I should have done it much much earlier.

Howard Simons

Actually, he should have NOTHING on BUT a hard hat!

Does he come with it?

FTTC or FTTP? Pah! I'm saving up for FTTK - Fibre To The Khazi :-)

Hurrah !

Rik Kershaw-Moore

Opps! They've got the wrong house...

Andrew Donaldson

Nomination for the title for Saturday's stream: "Naughty Lineman Playing with his Pole Livestream"

Mike O'Keefe

Awesome!

Awesome! Does the isle have enough bandwidth to the shore? And what bandwidth are you going to get?

Paul Schuur

Hopefully you'll be going from "semi-rural decent-but-slow internet" to "actually pretty nice" from now on. I've got >200 down but ~25 up. That up kills me at times.

What provider are you going with? Looks like it's off of an openreach pole. Also the guy should have a hard hat on. Naughty naughty.

Awesome....Congratz

Good news

Nic Higham

It's all done with YouTube's own app.

Big Clive

Most stuff is overhead here, including the power.

Big Clive

...and much faster! 👍

Peter Luijer

If you need a hand setting up stream Configs to work a little better let me know, I'll happily help. Congrats on the upgrade!

Looks like a possible thumbnail for the next stream.

DrSquirrel

From a pole?

Mikey

Now we'll be able to see things blow up faster ❤️

At our age we need more fibre apparently. It'll make the streams more regular

Mark Holder

Welcome back to the 1st world 😂👍

Great news Clive! Hopefully it will make your life a little easier 😎👍
