The new fibre connection

By request, a picture of the unexpectedly small incoming fibre optic unit.

The black and white cable is the outer black reinforced overhead tube with the white inner fibre sleeve.  The excess/spare fibre is figure-eighted at the back of the unit.

The black cable is a plug-in power supply.

The red cable is a data cable.

The stuff on the left is my old ADSL line.

Congrats man! Pew Pew!

Thanks for posting the picture Clive. I would suggest you run some ethernet round the house. I would also suggest putting a wifi access point within a few meters of where you use your phone for streaming. 5GHz is preferable. Did you know your microwave cooks at 2.4 GHz. With wifi you need a big as possible signal to noise ratio as possible for a solid reliable stream. You might be able to force your wifi to use a quieter channel there are apps for the phone. Radio hams call it maximum smoke. Best wishes, Tez.

Nuts 'n' Proud

I'm with talk talk. I think they are pretty good.

Nice... a relative moved into a new-build about 18months ago that came pre-fitted with a BT FTTH box about twice the size of that one. It also had Virgin Media pre-wired - he ended up going for that as it was cheapest for his usage (just a playstation and his phone, no computers!). I'm jealous, we're currently on FTTC, the cabinet being about 100ft away straight-line but crap cables snake all over the place first. 65Mbps service giving me 33... ADSL used to give us 6 - when ADSL was first launched, the Mrs was turned down for it as the line was too crap for 512Kbps ! No Virgin here, and FTTH is apparently not available.

First thing I did was add a complex password to the router. Not that it will protect against the glaring back doors that are sometimes left in place.

Big Clive

More Passwords for Clive to generate.

Andrew Donaldson

Did you ask the fitter if he had a larger one? πŸ˜±πŸ€£πŸ‘

Shows how fast tech moves - Have clients in KC area with that install system (reinforced tube with fibre in it), and a client with an openreach maintained leased line, where they uesd self supporting fibre from the pole to the building, with the time between them being under 1 year.

Chloe Cresswell

use :))

If you want to improve speed, wire your home network. Makes a world of difference. Juse wireless for other things.

Hub Rijcks

Via coax cable..

Hub Rijcks

I got internet via ethernet in The Netherlands, basic abbo. (measured) download 250 Mb, upload 30-40 Mb. Including TV/radio and telephone (without cost for phone calls) €64,50 a month via Ziggo. Happy. I hope your speed will improve dramaticly.

Hub Rijcks

I am with Talk Talk in the UK (Salford) l opted for FTTC ...,"fibre to the cabinet" a few years ago . I get about 35meg on average...and depending on traffic on my large housing estate downloads are good ..,l don't do any sizable uploads

Is good that both guys got beer tokens. (And offered tea/coffee.) I'll bet you have a sticker saying 'No cash kept on premises' despite running a shop & amusements.

Andrew Donaldson

It's not the size of the Unit that matters, it's what you can do with it.

Witold Witkowski

So far it has actually managed to disappoint by being slower than the ADSL. But they may just not have enabled the service fully yet.

Big Clive

Don't. It's currently slower than my copper service.

Big Clive

To absorb as much heat as possible. (or possibly radiate it)

Big Clive

They've supplied one. But no manual and no online one either.

Big Clive

Separate power supply.

Big Clive

No. But they may not have enabled the full speed yet.

Big Clive

The alarm LED has me alarmed about popping the lid.

Big Clive

A rather uninspiring 13Mbit down and 20Mbit up at the moment. (100Mbit service)

Big Clive

all underground tubs are in place. wanting for fiber to be installed ,

A PON, just like my electric coop built. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passive_optical_network

Peter Laws

Nice, they are currently digging up the roads outside my house and burying ducts and tubes to each property for FTTP.

Congrats on the FTTH clive you will not be disappointed.

Those prices should be illegal

Bas

Up/down speeds increased so wont be an issue so no stuttering or loss of connection, and good latency times. Youtubes compression will still be poor tho. Wonder if he can do 1080?

James

Congrats on the upgrade. I love how the Isle of Man can manage to do FTTH deployment. Meanwhile my city of 1/10 the size and twice the population in the middle of the mega metro area that is Southern California likely won't see serious talks about eventually doing fiber start for another decade or two. lol I managed to get fiber at work a few years ago, but it's >$2k/m for 30/30. Currently in talks up upgrade to 100/100 for around $2.5k/m.

Kadah

I have Fiber envy!

Why is mostly all equipment black these days?

Andrew Donaldson

"UV" leds ;)

Treat yourself to a nice new router as well. It does make a difference as the number of clients hooked up increases.

Immit81

It should be yes. It's a much cheaper way to deploy network only fiber. Fiber line goes through a passive splitter and then branches out to the homes on the street. Speeds over 1Gbit are still possible with PON so if the speed sucks it's not to blame. :)

Chris Parsons

Uses POE for power?

Scott Miller

Test it yet? Fast?

Bill Kerr

Amusingly I cannot read or think or say the word "Alarm" without thinking of that scene from Das Boot. I find it amusing, anyway :/

Mike Page

Beware the Go faster Clive

Tokkan FX

Looking forward to tomorrow's Patreon stream, wonder if we will notice the difference between the old and the new, or will it just be Big Clive who notices a difference. ?

When will you reverse engineer the unit/PSU to see how the gallium nitride LEDs are powered? A capacitive dropper maybe?

Gadgetman

PON ? Does that mean passive/shared optical network ?

lImbus924

Make sure you surround it with UV LEDs so you don't catch 5G from it.

Mark Trombley

Speedtest?

SimplyElectronics

That looks super similar to the older fttp boxes from BT over here in main UK. Nice!
