Electrosurgery pen

Stuff like this makes me feel a bit squeamish.  This is a surgeons pen that uses RF energy to cut and simultaneously seal flesh so that surgery can be performed with minimal blood invasion.

This video is just the pen and not the RF power supply.  I'd guess the RF energy source is likely to be like a scaled up cold cathode power supply.

That's a good point. Capacitive coupling in the cable.

You could rebrand it as a DIY circumcision kit and sell it to (communities who routinely do that)

There is another reason for having all the cable conductors at roughly the same potential: drive current. When you're up at MHz, it matters. Even current to the operator's hand has to be considered.

We are glad you could dig into it!

Earlier this year I had a fair,y aggressive skin cancer removed and the surgeon kept deploying this tool on me. I was fascinated

I would be good to get hold of a "power supply" unit. even if it's a broken one just to see how it works.

Using the tip as switch common simplifies clearances. The dome contacts can be detected via isolating pulse transformers. Fluke use a similar thing on their "split jacks". The tips might be autoclavable; or as you say just select what you want. The collar colour would indicate tip type. Why not have two Patient return pads (or two contacts on one adhesive panel) and regularly test impedance between them to prove good contact?

My employer re-designed a smaller thing for "epilation" (it zaps the follicles), which ran at about 4MHz and some tens of volts from memory. Du-Lac I think. The job was to replace an earlier unit designed by a local valve nut who used a ruddy great air core as part of the oscillator. Trading Standards pounced on that; ours was solid state. Chicken breast was recommended for testing. We made do with used teabags.

The downside being that it replaces a cut with a burn.

Better than Band-Aids to stop a bleeding. 😁 On the other hand, imagine the fun meat carving in the kitchen.. 😁

The question is, would you WANT to make a flesh cutting device?

Big Clive

What kind of circuitry does a machine like that have, i wonder. Could it be diy'd for cheap(er)?

Is this good for eye surgery?

Sounds very plausible to me. Just like when the dentist changes drill bits during the treatment and only clean/disinfect the equipment between patients (I hope)

Zeedijk Mike

Tips can probably be changed while working on one patient, and then the entire pen and connector is disposed of.

Or make one.

Very interesting video. I wish you'd been sent the power supply so you could demonstrate it on a pork chop or something :)

Charles

I checked that. The close pins fit the cheap meters and the wider pin spacing may fit the higher profile ones, but the third pin blocks it from going in.

Almost looks like the lead could be repurposed. Might connect to 3 of the 4 jacks on some multimeters.

Scott Miller

Yep. Have had one of these used on me. It was ok. And it was pretty stinky.
