Not a video (yet) - More ozone exploration

A spontaneous experiment with a simple voltage multiplier connected to the Russian Nuclear Corporation atmoshperic invigorator.

The capacitors are a higher value than the PCB was originally designed for (100nanofarts) so I had to make a double decker Cockroft Walton multiplier.

Really good results.  Prominent ionic breeze and decent amount of ozone that tripped the alarm in the test chamber at 45 seconds.

Hopi wouldn't read the power.  A series meter showed less than 1mA at 240V, about half of which is probably the neon indicator.

The classic multiplier circuit at mains frequency poses very little stress on the components.  This unit could run for decades with little maintenance other than cleaning or replacing the needles.  Running costs when powered 24/7 would be something like 25 pennies/cents a year.

It's a very simple PCB, so even if they had to do it from scratch it wouldn't take long.

Thank you, it worked out. Interestingly they didn't charge me an engineering fee, and it was approved within about 5 minutes. I wonder if they've realised lots of us are ordering the same things and reuse existing files?

Richard Robinson

Thanks, that's fixed it. Much appreciated!

Richard Robinson

They've changed something on their website. Try changing the file name of the outline file from outline.GML to outline.GKO

Big Clive

I got some of the minion boards a while back and used them with the single needle. I just tried to order the Russian nuclear corporation boards and JLC can't seem to pick up the size from them. I think it's suggesting there's something wrong with the Outline.GML Has anyone else had this issue?

Richard Robinson

The original design was for classic ioniser values like 10nF or 22nF but in this case the close vicinity of the emitters and ground plane mean that theoretically you can increase the activity of the atmoshperic invigorator by using different capacitor values.

Big Clive

I think it's better keeping it on the one channel as it has "better reach" as the marketing people like to say.

Big Clive

I did actually consider 3D printed spacer inserts.

Big Clive

I didn't realise it until afterwards. I thought I'd put some in the wrong way round.

Big Clive

Ooh…”The O-Zone”….I’m in !

Howard

Your rite yellow caps lol

Your rite . Lol

I'm wondering, why did you feel the need to use bigger than designed-for (and presumably higher capacity/voltage) caps? Does that matter in a Cockroft-Walton multiplier with such a small output? I can understand for a bug zapper (built mine with four 1 microfart caps), but an ioniser/ozoniser? Or were those just the caps you had lying around? :)

horrovac

Ngggggg.... That would drive me fecking nuts! I'd sort them out and have them consistent per-side!

horrovac

What 3D printed insulation? I see none.

horrovac

What's "too many" videos? There is no such thing. Ignore whomever is complaining about this. They can simply not watch.

horrovac

Is it time for a third channel just for the Ozone and related video's?. I'd subscribe.

The 3d printed insulation makes it look very beefy

I'm really liking the staggered look of the capacitors. Who knew you could build a voltage multiplier out of Lego...? 😁👍

Rupert Kent

BTW, no such thing as "too many" videos (on any subject).

Wim

Woo Hoo! (that was for the neon) ;)

Michael Thompson

That's even better - there is no right way!

The printed text was the same way on all the caps, but not the embossed logo.

Big Clive

Not orienting the caps consistently is going to drive some people crazy. You should definitely post a video.

with those bright yellow double stacked cap and Russian Nuclear on PCB with neeldles thru holes - looks like some kind of nuclear particle weapon (hmm ions pushed... so maybe)

I didn't even make a video while I was doing this, to avoid putting out too many ioniser/ozone videos. It was just a spontaneous experiment.

Big Clive

Very cool!

HarveyB

Can't wait for this one, looking good.

When’s the video?
