OSRAM photocatalytic air purifier

This is the simplest of these devices I've seen.  If it wasn't branded OSRAM I might be cynical that it was genuine.

It's always hard to tell if something like this is actually doing anything, unlike an ioniser or ozone generator where you can see and smell something.

How interesting!, I have several of these I picked up from Lidl last year. I took one apart because I wanted the enclosure for something else. I never realised the gauze was titanium , I was puzzled why it was solid. Also I didn’t realise leds were uv-a. I thought they were uv-c and they actually sterilised the air. I did wonder why they never had a bluish tint. Also that explains several identical led products labelled as osram/sylvania led advance mainly from Lidl. I thought osram was a top company until I read the comments.I’ve just bought some osram products for the car thinking it was a good brand 😐

My guess is that the pad is just titanium. And like all metals exposed to the air it creates a layer of oxide on the surface, making titanium dioxide in the process. That would be a good guess as to why they used a mesh rather than a plate, for maximum air to titanium contact.

You could take an eye out!

That's odd. I wonder if the 11 LED reference is for a different version.

Big Clive

That too has been targeted by the contrarians and flagged with their stock "cancer" label.

Big Clive

It does appear to be a surface contact thing.

Big Clive

OSRAM is sadly just a brand name owned by an investment company, with the lighting aspect spun off as LEDvance and sold to a Chinese company.

The newer version is all black, still has 4 UV LEDs, plus an LED for the Osram logo, circuit looks identical but is now EU v1.3.

The instructables circuits web site shows a build using a thicker catalyst block

Osram is a European, Asian and Australian brand name. In the Americas, their products are usually labeled Sylvania. Look for SYLVANIA Car UV Air Purifier or Sylvania AirZing.

Are these things not sold in the North American market? I'm in the US and Google is only showing me results that look very European. I can, apparently, order one from amazon.co.uk and have it shipped to the US, but shipping is $12.45 on a $23.78 order, which is a bit steep.

The sponge is to increase the active surface area of the Ti02 catalyst.

My understanding is that titanium dioxide is a catalyst metal, especially in the presence of UV light. I wonder what this means for sunscreens based on titanium dioxide (exposed to the UV from the Sun).

Contact of pathogens with the titanium dioxide may be needed to destroy them:

I note the PCB says EUMarket v1.0 - I wonder if there are different versions for other parts of the world? Can't be supply voltage differences of course.

Daikin's website speaks of photocatalysis, which might equate to "a photonic catalytic reaction". This was apparently invented by Fujitsu (https://www.ctc-n.org/products/titanium-apatite-technology) but I see no mention of UV light being needed? From the blurb on Daikin's various purifiers, I get the impression that UV is used for its own bug-killing properties, but it has nothing to do with the photocatalysis.

Pac-Man without a display? No fun. :@(

^ because it’s a 445nm laser, so red glasses

Efault

Yeah OSRAM is legit. I believe that’s what powers my 3W laser I use to smoke bowls (as a trick and with red glasses on). https://sites.google.com/site/dtrslasershop/home/diodes

Efault

Caution!!! Contains UV death rays. Bidoo Bidoo Bidoo. 😉

Here in nl they are on sale at lidl for 14,95... not too expensive if it actually does anything.. Can i add a link here? https://www.lidl.nl/p/osram-luchtreiniger/p100331187

Just add a sheet of toilet paper and you are good to go!

Bill Kerr

Went to find this item for sale - seems pretty expensive for such a simple thing. Which parts account for the price, the mesh, the UV-A leds, or just the brand name? If the mesh is Titanium Apatite, that might account for some of it.
