Lithium powered safety vest

Sorry - mega amounts of content today.
This one has a handy link in the description for an eBay listing.  It's a product that contains useful lithium cells and chargers at a ludicrously low price.  Either they've made a listing mistake, are selling redundant stock or are getting rid of them due to the slightly squirmy design weakness of having uncased lithium cells in a work garment.

Lithium powered safety vest

Comments

Mine arrived today, hadn't read the list so surprised to find 2 full vests (upgraded as the harness no longer available) complete with zips etc. 2 first aid kits and 2 safety glasses better quality than your usual rs/Screwfix/toolstation variety for the price. Β£10.74 for 2 sets delivered by DHL, excellent value. Thanks for the steer BC !!

ordered 2 (Β£4 each) at same time as you, recieved the complimentary goggles and first-aid kits too!

Sog Sussex

Same for me. 1 is missing the red LEDs on and back. Different packaging too.

Richard Robinson

Ordered 2 & they arrived but 2 slightly different products; one with red LEDs and one without. Also recieved an additional 12v supply as there was one inside the vest packaging. Not done too bad considering the 1st aid kits (loose description), the safety glasses (another loose description) and all the electronics - all for Β£10.

My 2 jackets arrived today. Price had bumped up to Β£4 each by the time I saw the video about dinnertime the day you released, but there was a slight discount for buying 2. It also came with 2 yellow tinted safety glasses and 2 first aid kits...

Richard Robinson

If the cells test out OK then it's definitely worth it for the cells and chargers.

Big Clive

Thanks Big Clive. Maybe not so bad for the bits eh?

Dave Frederick

I wouldn't wear that thing...

So, working with the Nevada Highway Patrol, over in the States, I noticed that the patrol cars got hit a lot on the side of the road. We had those things lit like Christmas trees and, it turns out, drunks are drawn to the strobes for some reason. They seem to stare at the flashing lights and then naturally follow their eyes with their vehicle.

Barry Ducote

The words "Design student's project" came to mind.

Big Clive

I doubt that's even going to cover their postage costs.

Big Clive

Yeah, I expected them to increase it when they saw the sales increase. It's also a different vest being shown now.

Big Clive

Oh I don't know - when I used to cycle in London, I'd have loved this!!!

Gareth Molyneux

Perhaps the LEDs are to cut through the Shenzhen Smog? LOL.

Mike Page

This would make the perfect accompaniment for that well-known hardware contributor to BCDC and dandy highwayman, Thomas Nagy (rhymes with bhaji) and his repurposed hand dryer safety helmet. πŸ‘· https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=in4BIBtm4lM ... timeline 19:20

Phil in the kitchen

I see the Clive effect has applied. Relisted at Β£6.15 HMmmmm

Gerry BVR

That shrink wrap over the batteries doesn't look like it would fare well against a fall on to anything.

that guy

I could see some value if working at night near heavy equipment. If I had to work around a big loader that is backing up and turning around in the dark I would want to be seen.

Mark Trombley

Those cells are in series according to Clive, so they're just standard 3.7V cells (4.2 fully charged).

Muxer Baker

3.7, it's just 3 standard lithium cells in series. Does it say 22Wh on both the cells and the pack? It should be around 7Wh per cell and 22Wh on the pack.

Muxer Baker

I think I've seen something like this already in use on the roads here. Although they are undoubtedly silly-looking, I can see the value, given how many people these days don't seem to know how to use their vehicle's headlights...

Nick Loh

So you're wearing a vest containing lithium batteries and lots of wires. It would probably be best not wear it at airport security, or indeed anywhere else you're likely to encounter trigger happy officials carrying guns!

Gary Bleads

lol @Dr Andy Hill You took the thought straight from my head :D .. still a great video... although I agree with Big Clive... why on earth would you need leds with such a good quality fluorescent strips. well they look decent quality anyway. but the leds are a crazy idea. Thank Clive

Wolfie RARAR

Big C, you make me nervous when you poke about on Lithium cells! I am an RC pilot and we use Lipo all the time. As you know, they are very volitile if poked. Best to have your pie dish handy, and your fire extinguisher. Great video, despite me yelling at the screen lol.

The title is an oxymoron, isn't it? Lithium and safety???

Dr Andy Hill

Looks like a different product now to what Clive got.

evilution

Ordered 4! Thanks, Clive.

The factory's in china have old stock parts and over stock parts to get rid of so they come up with stuff like this.

richard ockman

Grabbed 3 this morning less then 2 euros each, they are up to 7 euros nowπŸ˜…

This looks like someone's "revolutionary" invention. That someone, having never worn high-viz and knowing nothing about electronics in wet environments.

Wim

Clive, Get another, add a flashing circuit to it, and then make it required wearing for all live streams.

Chris Muncy

I have just snagged the last two that where available. I normally miss out on the best prices.

Namirred

Those cells are in parallel, and 11.1 volts 2000mAH each. Might be worth it just for those cells.

Chuck Kirchner

the Big Clive effect

Jonas

Can the batteries be used separately and if yes would they then be 3.7V each or 11.1V?

Jonas

So the three batteries as taped together are 22.2Wh? not 22.2Wh each?

Jonas

Now Β£4 each +Β£3 postage. hmmm

Mike Hughes

Ordered 4 to the states. Bottom line $7.50 each total.

If you buy 3 of them it's the same shipping price, works out around Β£6 per vest, which is dirt cheap for a reflective jacket, never mind the electronics. That's Β£6 for: 1 X 2000mA 12V Li-Ion pack 1 X 12V Li-Ion car charger 2 x 1ft 12V White LED strip 1 X Reflective vest 1 X 12V Mains charger (I'd salvage this for parts).

Muxer Baker

Only Β£2 to buy, but Β£13 to ship overseas.

Russell Levine

I have a seam stripper here.

Big Clive

I think you would quickly became a laughing stock wearing this on a building site. Especially when it bursts into flames.

Tony Weavers

I like that the batteries are in the middle of the waist so when you carry something pointy it punctures the cell and bursts into flames, very safe

Coil B

You should buy yourself a Stitch Picker. The help unpicking and opening stitched fabric garments. Much safer than a pair a scissors.

Jeremy Travis

This man is a machine....
