It's the gift that keeps on giving

It turns out that of three 12/24V lithium chargers, only one resembles the real thing inside.

If it's just the ROM you can download the file online. They will have it for use with MAME.

234053005033 Here is the ebay num. I did not realize how short the time clock on it was so i guess ill have to miss this one. maybe next time. unless they relist.

A company I worked for had a Chinese supplier shortlisted to provide these for TV use in cars and motorhomes (Winnebagos, RV or whatever people call them) and we specified 3 regular diodes in series to drop the higher Leadacid battery/charge voltage down to approx 12V for the TV. First batch was OK, then we started getting heaps of returns for dead TV's and figured out they had omitted, or simply bypassed the diodes! Supplier probably subcontracted yet another company to produce them. There was a fuse on the LCD controller thankfully so I got a few spare usable LCD modules out of it. The TV mainboard fed 12V directly to the LCD and had 2 buck converters (5V & 3.3V) and one boost converter (Backlight)

The old vector-tube machines are pretty fragile and difficult/expensive to repair. If you buy one, you should probably plan on spending a fair bit to get it running / keep it running.

Charles

If i found tempest orig game rom for reasonable price should i buy it???

I too have come across people that that do that. They do it to "blow faults clear" instead of tracing them properly. The problem being that sometimes the fault is so solid that it melts all the wiring.

Big Clive

The one I took apart looked OK visually, but without a hi-pot test and/or unwinding the transformer it's impossible to tell fully how safe it is.

Electrical safety first is the "charity" division of the NICEIC. There's nothing charitable about it, and EVERYTHING they do is financially motivated. I will not EVER promote either the NICEIC or their fake charity, because there's nothing safe at all about deskilling the electrical industry.

It's difficult not to think of Star Trek episode "Trouble with Triples" 🤔 I really love they have increased the fuse ampage by soldering a wire across the fuse terminals. So professional 🙄

Zeedijk Mike

Oh shit ! Lovit.

Pierre

There is too much junk out there. Everything comes at a price.

Frank

Mmmmm full of melty goodness….

Phil Collins

Wow. Nice catch Clive. What was the story on the mains-powered one?

Jack Hodgson

I know Clive hates Quangos but Electrical Safety First is promoting to petition your local MP about online sellers to comply with our safety regulations. After a couple of recent close calls with crap from eBay + Vevor I am keen for people to sign this petition. I just let my guard down on these items supplied by a friend as I usually take it apart and test anything I buy from these sources. So please Google electrical safety first and join in. Also they keep a list of electrical recall notices, look at timeline less stuff in the past. This list comes from the council/fire brigade.

I shudder to think how many fires have been caused by these dreadful chargers.

Mike Hughes

If it has the white diffused LED and current regulating circuitry then it should hopefully be OK.

Big Clive

Allo Clive. Thanks for the heads-up ... I bought four, so I've just checked the vehicle chargers on each; no dimples on the cases, and inside, the same small PCB that you thought was the only good one in your samples. Is this lot the fire-risk it would seem to be?

It's a standard size of 1.25" or 32mm.

Big Clive

What keywords do I need to order the longer glass fuse?

Neil Tonks

Just WOW. Thanks Big Clive. That Is educational and a little scary.

Dave Frederick

Hey, they gave you a 500A fuse for the price of a 1A. Good stuff.

Charles

I've seen electricians that carry little pre-cut lengths of rebar that match the size/diameter of standard fuses in their tool kits. I always wondered WTF every time I saw that. "Oh, it's for troubleshooting"; Oh, then you're an idiot.

Barry Ducote

Is that what you call a slow fuse :)
