UVC lamp that can zap you

This lamp has one of the most unfriendly power supplies ever.  When unplugged it can hold a charge of over 300V across the base for a long time.

Normal glass and many plastics block UVC. It's actually tricky finding things it actually passes through.

I think the whole pandemic thing made manufacturing the UVC LEDs viable. They seem to be popping up in a huge range of products now.

Hi, I imagine it's still a mercury lamp, so will have full 254nm emition. I've never heard of a lamp that can filter the 254nm out, as it would probably be a much better ozone emitter if it did. So, if you want it for germicidal purposes, I'd say it'd be perfectly fine. If it was from a water sanetiser, it was probably the 254nm that was being used anyway, unless they were drawing air past it to make ozone of course!

This is how Big Clive tans himself at home! lol

Clive window glass does block some UV, if you made the dangerous xmas UV lamps and put them in glass testubes or small bottles would that reduce the UVA-B-C light Also some safety glasses, YT show girls with clear glasses using TIG welders, I was a bit shocked at first but I guess they do not have a problem ? I have used both black glass masks and auto darkening welding helmet, I still have one from the 1980s with the same battery and it still works. Our Honda Jazz windscreen blocks enough UV that my wife's Reactolite glasses do not darken. Hi Clive, an interesting video. It might make another good video by fixing the unit with a ballast to make it safer and correct the power factor?

We always used to shout "eyes" before striking an arc, so people would know to look away.

Mike Hughes

Clive, have you any more news about UVc LED's? Are they mass produced to a price similar to say Infra Red ones yet?

Mike Hughes

ARC exposure when I was 10y back in 1970s in the welding shop, my dad would get me to hold framework while he did the welds ;-) "I was a bit like an automated CLAMP" I used to get a sun tan in winter. The only safety equipment in the Blacksmiths show was the SHOUT " MIND OUT ! "

I salvaged a 12 inch long 182nm bulb and power supply out of an unused water sanitizer. I put it in a ~3 cubic foot box and ran it for about 30 seconds and definitely got the strong ozone smell after opening it back up. The power supply is really nice it has runtime reporting on the bulb. I want to get a higher nm bulb more in the anti-germicidal range but the socket for the bulb is so unique I don’t even know how to go about describing it. There are about 4 different types I have seen online but even when they post a picture of the socket it is hard to tell.

I recognize that aqua color as a danger sign, and the scent is quite obvious.
