Just a quickie - neon sign controller

This is a very short video of the sign animator on a large neon sign on the side of a famous Scottish music venue.

It wasn't easy to film due to being quite slow in operation.

The letters build up to spell the name and then the stars light.

Are the contacts high voltage for the neon or line voltage to the drivers?

Michael Gilchrest

Very respectful toast to Michael Thompson. The fact you always speak the truth and are not afraid to speak from your heart definitely comes through. Thanks for all you do.

Alex Taylor

Prompted me to search YT for a video of the sign. I know of the venue but wasn't aware of the neon sign. A superb thing it is!

If they'd used that system here it would have been easy to fit new microswitches.

It is still great old school tech , Commercial dish washers used multi-cam micro-switch.Easy to test easy to repair.

richard ockman

Don't fuck with it.

Russell Levine

It does, but probably showing the sign operating and then the controller. Not so easy, as it would require someone to go in at night to turn it on. The sign only gets used during events.

Big Clive

Yes they are. Noting the use of earth wire for some of the live connections.

Big Clive

It's lasted a long time, but shows signs of contact pitting.

Big Clive

It is at just about groin height.

Big Clive

Or indeed any other parts of one's anatomy. :-)

Jon Knight

Needs to be a little longer video maybe.

richard ockman

Great video! I'm guessing these contacts are on the primary side of the HV transformer?

Mike Page

I have Seen that before on old chasing light marquee signs, also Reminds me of the Cam timers and micro switches we used to control solenoid valves for timing water effects in the Water park.

Jonathan Hughes

I imagine this is pretty reliable…

Michael Gilchrest

It's definitely not something you poke your fingers into.

Big Clive

I love these old mechanisms in the days before electronics. I guess there's no reason to modernise it if this continues to be functional and repairable.

Gavin Stirling

sort of a cam-switch system. Reminds me of ancient phone systems I occasionally find in commercial building closets which are just an array of mechanical relays switching phone lines in and out.

Looks spicy!
