Flux atomizing pen for fault finding.

At first glance this device may look like it's for atomizing cannabis resin.  But it turns out it has a valid electronic use too.  OK, I'm sure that many bought from eBay as rosin atomizers will be used for different resins, but as a fault finding tool it's actually pretty neat.

It's funny, I just saw these things on AliExpress for the first time yesterday and wondered if they actually worked - and it turns out you're going to tell us. Fantastic.

mmmhhh, unless you wear an FFP2 mask all the time I think it will rosin atomizer your board and your lungs...

Roberto Coli

That is a clever device. Paired with a high quality Lebanese resin I would expect it to do a wonderful job of fogging one's circuits.

Bill Kerr

It flashes back onto the heater.

An overloaded resistor was the easiest thing to guarantee to get hot in a controlled manner.

Big Clive

It's a classic vaping coil wound around a wick.

Big Clive

Ah, I misread your post as preheating. I'm not sure how good it would be for blanket fluxing PCBs. You might find too much went into the air.

Big Clive

too bad Clive used resistors to demonstrate it instead of capacitors, missed opportunity :P

Erik Granlund

that's really clever! i like it!!!

Interesting. Can you set light to the cloud?

Mike Page

I wonder if it has a Flux Capacitor and could be used for time travel…

Might be good for my moustache wax, said Marcel Wave.

At first I thought it was April first but this is advertised in many sites as a flux atomizing device.

I guess that using ones hot breath to locate track faults etc. is no longer PC

Andrew Donaldson

Interesting application for that device. Could you do me a favor and make a bigger photo of the coil, if you have time for that? Is it built with a wire or with a piezo element? I can't find detailed photos of it. I have many of that type of battery here and don't really use them anymore, but maybe they can get a second life now :D Maybe i can convert the old atomizers to rosin. The threading on the battery is called 510, the soldering tip should screw into the inner thread of the battery if it's a standard device.

What a clever little diagnostic device- must get one.

I was thinking more in terms of a flux, might be a way to do it without alcohol dissolved flux bubbling etc.

William Taylor

It doesn't radiate much heat. All the action is in the ceramic cup.

Big Clive

I wonder if it would also be useful for pretreating boards before solderring too! Perhaps smd boards with solder paste etc. I think it's worth experimenting for sure!
