Prototype USB to LED string PCB

Just the same circuit as the hard wired version, but with the convenience of everything just plugging together without chopping up USB leads.

This was a prototype, and in hindsight I might just put two large solder pads on it for direct connection of the LED string, or maybe even a mini screw terminal connector.  Then the whole PCB could have a short bit of heat shrink sleeve put over it.

Why limit your options? Can put both screw terminals and JST connectors (or three options with solder pads).

Could do with some. Will you be selling packs as kits or populated, in your shop?

Andrew Donaldson

any chance of you putting up the gerbers for the usb-led one?

Scott Traynor

Maybe a spot for a resistor to keep the power bank awake on next design? new cheap power banks dont stay awake anymore.

Dave does tend to have high expectations of meters. To me, a general purpose meter is fine.

When my last multimeter acted up, I bought the Uni-T UT61E to get mA resolution on the 10A range as this range uses a shunt, so less likely to skew the reading than the lower ranges. I just wish I didn't watch EEVBlog's review of it as I looked at countless alternative meters, until I found another review LearnElectronics, totally opposite to Dave who made it look like an awful meter.

Well, I WAS going to suggest this, but I just assumed you had your reasons for chopping up the USB cables. Great idea, though, to add the resistors right on the USB board. I admit that wasn't part of my plan. It is now. Ta

I did make a hand-etched prototype of that a while ago. It requires a thicker PCB material than normal.

Big Clive

It's easy to overheat connectors and have the pins slide out.

The 2 pin USB connector just melted and the prongs came out ,this was a few days ago just a coincidence. I was not using a PCB, might try a bit of veroboard next time. I think I should have used a heat sink for soldering USB or spot welded the wires / wire wrap ?? https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32845760921.html John

you should design one that has the pcb go direct into the usb port.

You Sir are no schmoe 🙂

Dr Andy Hill

Cute board! I'm finding myself making more and more little utility PCBs. The barriers are so low that even a schmoe like me can save a lot of hassle laying out a board. I mostly wanted to write because I recently modified a little LED desk lamp with a capacitive touch switch to be always on; I didn't want the touch switch because it's plugged into a smart outlet, and having it default off makes it rather useless. Having watched you tear down so many LED-related things made me reasonably sure I could take the little touch sensor board out of the picture, and it works great! Thank you.
