Testing bulk LED filaments

This video started as a simple test of a pack of bandoliered LED filaments from Aliexpress, but kinda turned into an experiment with driving them all from a capacitive dropper.

There's a link to the listing I bought these from in the YouTube description.  It's a pack of 100, but 105 were actually supplied.

The 1872 LED reference is the 104 filaments with 18 LED chips each.

Mine all arrived intact, but that depends on how nice the postal system is.  An order for coloured filaments paced at the same time from a different seller had about half of them pre-snapped.  I'm not sure if that was during shipping or if they were pre-broken dumpster-dive LEDs.

I think I managed the very first video on the filaments when they first appeared.

Big Clive

Are you the lone reviewer from the "UK", Clive, on those filaments? ;-)

Dustin

Yeah, I'm holding off for a bit on a few things(*) I'd like. (* ie, i've ~100 things in my basket and probably ought to shift stuff onto wishlist or something because it's getting silly)

David Reader

The first few lots of 100 I found on Ali listed the voltage at 47V. Fair warning to others though, it is approaching the Aliexpress 11.11 "festival". That's where for the month or so before vendors raise their prices just to put them on "sale" on 11.11 at still over usual retail cost. Not a great time to buy.

Have you checked that you're not a Dr Jekyll to Big Clive's Mr Hyde? :-)

Jon Knight

With a suitable transistor you could probably drive a few.

Big Clive

That's not a bad idea. Maybe with a resistor too as a precaution.

Big Clive

For polarity testing you could just use your insulation tester. It's limited at about 1.6mA.

So funny, again something I recently bought for the sake of trying out.. (last month). This happens often, that I buy some stuff and see it here a little later/earlier.. 🤣🤣

Looking forward to the DIY Dubai lamp schematics. Can you also do a 120V version?

The release of LEDs in 1872 is what most economists claim is the root cause of the Panic of 1873.

Imagine the Pharos Of Clive of Man the equivalent of the Ancient Pharos (Lighthouse of Alexandria in Egypt) It would be lit by a million LED's from Ali Express, and powered from a set of poundland 4000mah Powerbanks!

Mike Hughes

I'm just wondering, how many of them could be driven with a single Joule Thief...

KeresztG

Those LED's have come down in price substantially from their £5 each price a couple of years ago. Time to try and buy some for fun things to make.

Mike Hughes

Time to build the LED ship in a bottle.

Is there a glassblower on the Isle of Man? You could do a massive lightbulb.
