Building supercomputers

An extremely frustrating week of multiple attempts at videos that didn't work out quite right.  Hopefully that's me back in the swing of things again.

I've never really featured the supercomputers on the main channel, so this video addresses that.

It also gives Evilution's and Mouse's Etsy pages a bump.

Clive, some of those “paint-drying” operations would make for a nice time-lapse ;-)

Gordo

I would love to see a snow flake hex computer. Perfect for Christmas.

Zeedijk Mike

You can get short strings of lights for beards. But they are a bit weird.

Big Clive

The large rectangular panel can be populated selectively to form letters.

Big Clive

Strictly subjective. But for reference I have to tame down the 1K version for video use. The resistors also affect the total current, which isn't much anyway.

Big Clive

You can choose to pay after they have validated the order, but they can still make wrong PCBs.

I think it’ll take the LEDs “The Poincaré recurrence time of the universe” to sync up again, I’m still waiting for mine to do it !

Regrettably, Kane has informed me that he has no plans to sell the Cubeputer as a kit. But no worries, as that has inspired me to come up with a few unique designs of my own.

Andrew Donaldson

as long as your alive, life is okies *Hugs*

Scott Traynor

What a great idea! Banggood often show video's of their kits being constructed.

Andrew Donaldson

Hi Matt. This is the video I made. I'll probably make more someday but this is a simple video of it doing it's thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0zMHj4jGeY

Russell Couper

Is there a link to Mouse's video of his pick & place machine? I'm looking for it but not finding anything.

Matt Tester

Your video gave me an idea, not sure if i will ever do it but the idea is neat. It would be cool to do this to those large letters that stores sell for room decor. (like at Hobby Lobby) The ones that look like they were part of an outdoor business sign. Just imagine the letters BIG CLIVE with supercomputers built into each letter flickering away on the wall. It would be very unique.

Matt Larson

Watching you fully assemble that would make for some serious good slow TV.

Rik Kershaw-Moore

What's the brightness difference between using 470 and 1k resistors?

Connor Strothman

Would probably have to be driven by higher voltage, though.

Jeremy Impson

I think everyone should go and buy 5 of each supercomputer just in case they become priceless collectables.

Russell Couper

If you drive multiple blinking LEDs from a single resistor, they will tend to blink in sync. It occurs to me that someone very clever could lay down runs of sync'd LEDs so as to cause specific shapes to appear.

Jeremy Impson

I have designed a round one but I've got a feeling my pic and place file for the resistor is wrong, do I need to place and pay for the order before JLCPCB check its viable for production?

Jono Harley

shift registers with output latches, perhaps? - see 74HC595 for example. Those can be cascaded, or you may be able to find suitable larger parts.

David Reader

if its any consolation my week has been very disjointed (brain wise) but things are looking up again i feel my creative juices will be flowing again soon. Hope youre back on track dude.

Sog Sussex

My sons keep telling me, there comes a time when you've got to let go of ideas etc.

Andrew Donaldson

I find that this type soldering project is a great way to relax.....music on in the background and let the solder flow.

John Carr

Oh yes, any ideas for putting LEDs in a beard? Want to brighten up our work Christmas lunch this year.

The 3D printed ones I did are still going strong after running for 14 months 24x7. It's a 3D printed 10x10 grid, with the LEDS pushed through. They are all wired in parallel with just one resistor in the supply cable to step things down. 3 panels consume a total of approx 100ma at 5V. They look very nice in the window, but don't know what the neighbours think!

Michael mc349iii

I implemented a proof of concept "supercomputer" in software (just JS). It does look like the real thing. This makes me think of a version with adjustable speed, or RGB. Has anyone a good idea how to get from - say bread & butter SoC GPIO - to hundreds of LEDs?

MrTridac

Love 'm

This is really inspirational!
