I'm not buying the industrial building
Added 2021-11-30 17:56:37 +0000 UTCThe idea of buying an old industrial building for use as a workshop has fallen through.
There were too many unknown variables regarding structural wood and steel components hidden from view in a damp wall.
Slightly disappointed, because it would have been cool, but a modern premises is probably a much better option.
Comments
Shame, it would have made an interesting video or 2!
Alan King
2021-12-06 18:28:21 +0000 UTCProbably a much better option than an old musty damp building.

2021-12-04 15:54:45 +0000 UTCdidnt ralfy already buy things for that place?
2021-12-03 20:48:17 +0000 UTCThat's a shame but if it had issues it would have been a money pit so I guess it's for the best in the long run.

2021-12-02 20:50:21 +0000 UTCOld places have charm, history, character, etc. And cost more. New places are comparably soulless, but allow you to move in and get on with 'proper work'. As others have mentioned - going with your gut is always sensible enough. Not sure on the state of the Manx industrial property scene but hopefully there's more fish in that there sea! Best of luck with the journey in finding a place to fill with techno bits and other tomfoolery :) I'm sure you're aware but be warned - once you have a big place you'll fill it then never be able to move out! Not necessarily a problem...

2021-12-01 22:39:52 +0000 UTCHi Clive! I’m sorry to hear that it is not going to happen, however it is always best to listen to your gut instincts and as you have said there are too many potential issues to make the purchase worthwhile so you are definitely making the correct decision 👍 I’m sure you will find a suitable alternative if that’s what you require 😎 Best of luck
Lee Goodair
2021-12-01 22:38:45 +0000 UTCSo sad.... Better luck next time...
2021-12-01 12:16:04 +0000 UTCA disappointment for you but clearly a wise, but hard, decision - we would not want to be watching a Big Clive 'Office reverse engineering' video of the building should it prove unsound. Hope you can find another (even more suitable) building - even if it does not have a lift to tinker with!
Mr B Shepherd

2021-12-01 10:42:41 +0000 UTCI'm sorry Clive, I know how much you were looking forward to the old place. It's definitely the right choice, but that doesn't mean it has to come easy. I hope you find somewhere else that tickles your heart as well as your mind.

2021-12-01 01:03:23 +0000 UTCI'm sorry to hear that too, but I also think you played your cards just right. That could be the very reason why the pl;ace was up for sale. And I have confidence that all your planning and musing wasn't wasted either - saves you repeating it all from scratch when you find the next contender. Someone else once got famous by saying that they could have been a contender; you are still in the ring.

2021-12-01 00:58:25 +0000 UTCGood call, if it has the potential to be a money pit, the chances are it will become one.

2021-12-01 00:44:11 +0000 UTCOne less financial obligation, worthy of celebration. Just keep the ECPD handy for the tighter residential quarters. (a.k.a. Explosion Containment Pie Dish)
2021-11-30 23:49:20 +0000 UTCIt's better to have avoided buying it if there are too many unknowns, last thing you want is a hefty repair bill, and if it's listed, all the red tape that comes with that side of things!
Dave Matthews
2021-11-30 23:44:35 +0000 UTCYeah, sounds like a crappy, but appropriate call, especially if said wall is load bearing. Things could very quickly go from "this needs fixed ASAP" to "the building needs to be demoed"

2021-11-30 21:39:05 +0000 UTCClive, I'm actually sad to hear that, as you've put so much thought and effort into it all, but If it's looking more dogy, then definitely better to drop it. Still, I hope you find another even better place soon!

2021-11-30 20:43:48 +0000 UTCA decision is done. Peace. For a penny or two - I have lost so much time for electronics etal projects dealing with my old houses. I learned a lot , but not computers/electronics.. and have as many construction tools as electronic tools.
2021-11-30 20:40:59 +0000 UTCThe guy who surveyed it raised some very valid points.

2021-11-30 20:40:32 +0000 UTCYeah, I was surprised that he did that.
Big Clive
2021-11-30 20:37:48 +0000 UTCI got the feeling that some potential issues could be quite major. The building is made of loose stone like a wall.

2021-11-30 20:35:57 +0000 UTCIf you didnt feel comfortable about it, you made the right decision now, rather than going through with it then having regrets. I always go with my gut instincts and they have never let me down.

2021-11-30 20:05:05 +0000 UTCGet a second opinion by a builder not surveyor. Having bought a couple of houses the surveyor warned against spoke to builder then went back with lower offer. You can get insurance sometimes on things like this. By the way we did good and fixed the property all went well until got divorced. Problem is surveyor are usually working for mortgage companies so always go for caution.

2021-11-30 19:56:08 +0000 UTCFuck. Oh well. Is there a construction site nearby that can help you cheer up 🤔 otherwise perhaps a trip to your favourite nightclub in Glasgow? 🕺

2021-11-30 19:08:20 +0000 UTCLike you have said in some the streams the speculators haven't touched it to turn in to luxury apartments, maybe they found out the same as you have to many hidden pitfalls. Also you did question the roof at somepoint, so it is probably better to walk away rather than be stuck with a white elephant.
2021-11-30 19:02:13 +0000 UTCThat's sad, but better you listen to your gut feelings.

2021-11-30 18:52:04 +0000 UTCAt the end of the day you have to do what is best for you. Modern is sometimes better but if there is too much to decide on and you don't get a positive feeling then it's time to walk away.
2021-11-30 18:49:14 +0000 UTCSad, it is good to have these visions of what could be but the practicalities tend to rule. Let’s commiserate over a woofle or two in a few days.

2021-11-30 18:45:59 +0000 UTCI'm sorry to hear that. It's been one of my dreams for years to buy an old factory / industrial building (I live in the northeast US and they're everywhere) but these days they're all either in terrible disrepair or being bought up by cannabis growers, driving prices sky high.

2021-11-30 18:29:30 +0000 UTCMakes a lot of sense as you don't want to be left with huge bills for a structurally compromised building. Would have been interesting though.
2021-11-30 18:29:08 +0000 UTCI honestly think it's for the better. Perhaps a small workshop at your current residence will work out.
2021-11-30 18:29:08 +0000 UTCThat is unfortunate. You were pretty excited, especially about the lift !
2021-11-30 18:28:13 +0000 UTCThat's a shame as you were really psyched about it making plans etc, but totally understandable as well. As said by others here: no fun in buying a money pit even with the family to try and help restore it. On to the next opportunity! \o/

2021-11-30 18:02:30 +0000 UTCYes disappointing but I think you made the right decision Clive, unknown factors, damp wall, old building, just too many variables for comfort, hope you find the right place soon. Yes I agree modern will be better but maybe not so characterful.

2021-11-30 18:01:19 +0000 UTCThat's a real shame, but hopefully you can find something else to tickle your fancy soon (that isn't about to be converted into flats etc)
2021-11-30 18:01:00 +0000 UTCThat's a wise choice considering that the amount of variables is too high. A different building maybe!
2021-11-30 18:00:53 +0000 UTCSorry to hear that news Clive so your scepticism was well founded. All you can do now is move on to the next one .
2021-11-30 18:00:45 +0000 UTCI'd much rather you have plenty of time for taking electronics to bits than having to rehab a building. That said, seeing you attack a problem wall with "brute force and ignorance" could prove interesting. 😁 Hope you find the right space soon.
Davin Desborough
2021-11-30 17:59:55 +0000 UTCIt's a shame because you were clearly excited by the idea of it, but better to find out it's too risky now when you're only some surveys and legal fees into the process than buy it and find you have to practically tear down and rebuild. It's also a shame for the building itself - it pretty much guarantees it's just going to sit there and slowly rot until someone gets permission to knock it down and build some expensive flats on the site
2021-11-30 17:59:50 +0000 UTCAs someone who's always trying to fix his damp old house I can say you probably did the right thing.
