We have a number of those cheap 2xAA static units round little bushes in the garden except they use the blob LEDs on fine wire. This year I noticed they seemed very bright, so in true BigClive fashion, I measured the current - 160mA - after fitting a 12ohm resistor inside the case - 38mA and still adequately bight..

That's it I'm off to ASDA tomorrow. They look so cool they'd look great down my back garden.

Is it a battery powered set or powered by one of the common 31V plug-in power supplies?

Big Clive

You're sounding a fair bit healthier than last week, probably just going stir crazy now! I really like that Asda set. Unfortunately my nearest Asda is an hour away by bus, and in the current environment that's not happening! I yanked an LED clean off one of my sets last year but somehow it didn't break the wires so I just applied copious insulation tape to stop the now bare wires shorting and left them be. I'm sure that's now a weak point but so far, so lucky.

with the 3 wire lv set - what sort of fault (or alternative wiring) would allow an apparent break inside the wire to only take out a short section of leds? my guess is it is wired as multiple sections and either the + or - is broken in the middle so only the side with the continuous length is working?

Hang in there mate!

Our pet rabbits had the freedom of the house when I was a kid (yes they would go up and down the stairs with no probs - one would come into my bedroom whenever I had my music blaster going, and just sit in the middle of the room until I turned it off). They chewed the wallpaper in every room up to about 8" high, but never ever touched electric cables. Clever bunnies! Nice Xmas lights!

Yeah, the polarity swapping ones are annoying. If the power supply is around 31V then you may be able to swap it with another one.

Big Clive

If they're push-in lamps and the tungsten ones come out of the holders easily then here's a link to a guide on my old website. I don't recommend using the capacitor as it introduces complications and is really not needed for standard LEDs. The series string will need to be mains powered, as the holders will all be in series and would require about 50V or more to make LEDs light. http://www.bigclive.com/fairy.htm

Looks and sounds good Clive and you sound pretty good too, hope your recovery is going well.

Dr Andy Hill

Feel better soon my friend!!

James Clark

Get well soon Clive. The lurgy hasn't caught up with me yet but I'm bound to pick it up eventually!

I use one of these in public - "Trend Air Stealth P3R Half Mask Respirator Med/Large "

i had one sting of polarity-switching LEDs fail. investigated the issue, it must be the IC failed. now i need to devise some other means of PWM'ing the polarity on the string. it was just a few weeks old... :(

Good timing, but different lol I have a tree with 20 x mains bulbs in, most have blown and I want to use your modification to LED idea pushing LEDs in to the existing caps. Ideally to run on 5v - need to dig it out and check the wiring for series/parallel before i blow anything up :D

I enjoyed this video, I was thinking about the 3 wire system and wondered about this trickery. Glad you're ok.

Tony Weavers

So glad you are feeling better Clive, you had us all worried in case you got worse. Thanks for doing the video Clive, interesting and we know you are OK. A better mask would help when on an aeroplane, an FFP3/N97 would protect you much better. They fit my fairly big chops with the beard fine.

Thanks Big Clive. Get well soon.

Dave Frederick

Your ASDA and POUNDLAND always sell much better quality Tat than ours do! Which I don't understand as we're located in an affluent stockbroker area.

Andrew Donaldson

great video, good quality too. take care and get well soon

Richard Boyce

Thanks for the video, and get well soon!

Nick Loh

Don't jump!

Rob Googe

Get well soon, Clive!

Mike Cowen

Hope you feel better soon, Clive!
