Fixing the Internet of dead things.

Back at the normal bench, so let's celebrate by fixing a posh thermostat.

I’ve had at least three of these units from different customers fail in exactly the same way, Google’s solution is usually to send a FOC replacement, if you are within the two year warranty that is

Shamefully I have a device like this buried somewhere here in the gadget mountain.

The right most are for powering the stat side if you want it on one power supply (the WiFi enables smart bit) but end up mostly unused as there is the option for micro USB to power the stat also

A U.K. Nest Thermostat comes in two parts. There is the main logic - which is the thermostat and display itself and has the smart software, which links to Wifi, has a battery, and links to the Heat Link unit using Zigbee. It uses the existing thermostat wiring using that 12V supply to charge it’s battery, and then there’s the unit that is called the ‘heat link’ (which is what this is) which effectively replaces the timer and sits next to wherever the chocolate block of connectors for the boiler is (so whatever wiring it uses for calling for heat etc) . This box is designed to go wherever the chocolate block is - mine was in my airing cupboard upstairs and we effectively removed the timer under the boiler. Mine was installed in 2014 and was still working a-ok without issue when I moved out of the house a couple of months ago. But mine was the old 2nd Generation U.K. one that didn’t do the hot water and only the central heating - however it did save me a small fortune in heating costs over the time I had it, compared to the 5 years previously when I was just using thermostat & timer.

If having to lift SMT components is a regular thing these make it much easier, and aren’t too crazy expensive : https://www.ebay.com/itm/223951230776?hash=item3424889738:g:RrMAAOSwYbNgGqtW

Hmm. I'm sure their wiring diagram for the S-plan should have a neutral going to each valve too.

Ah, so it does power remote stuff.

Big Clive

Feeling fine, but awaiting my chance to try a new covid variety.

Big Clive

Yeah. The covid is long past. (Unless I catch the next version.)

Probably because the directors made 1 million pounds more profit by changing diode supplier and reducing the build cost by 0.5 penny per unit A customer tried this but failed, the reduced metal sheet thickness of an electrical consumable product (deliberately un named) spewed from the rollers mid production line lol but some reduced size product did make it to market, sadly for us who have to use it.

Gavin Gilmore

Hey a friend (electrician) contacted me about a faulty one of these, a few internet searches had got his customer a replacement in the post FoC seems to be electronically weak, his one showed/indicated a missing network, nest remotely Diagnosed and concluded the 12v supply to the remote thermostat was missing……. Sorry if this does not make sense I’ve been consuming alcoholic beverages and I’m dis-lat-tic … that covers that lol

Gavin Gilmore

Welcome home Clive, I trust you are fully recovered now.

How did a 3A diode with a thermal pad fail?? Was it counterfeit? Is there too much flyback energy?

Mike Page

Great to see you back

Try using two soldering irons ,one on each connection then lift the part using the irons like tweezers.

Repairing stuff like this makes a great video, and it's super helpful to folk who take part in Repair Cafe and Restart Parties. Thumbs up from me for more of these!

Jon Knight

this whole "smart cloud" stuff can only be fixed by dropping it off at a recycling center..

WooShell

Always something new to learn on your channel BC.

Mike Hughes

I love comparing this comparatively high end stuff to the eBay specials.

c

I assume you're feeling better now, right? If so, happy to hear that!

Couldn't agree more🤠,well that and the Ionisers ✌️

Simon Midgley

Are the rightmost terminals a 12V output to something else? That might be the reason for the larger 3A diode.

John Hiesey

These "fix it" videos are my absolute favorite on your channel.
