Any questions for tonight's stream?

Do you have any questions to revitalise the chat in tonight's stream when it invariably goes a bit weird?

Comments

Good timing. I've just released that very video on Patreon.

Big Clive

Answer to 2nd question: might be a weak conduction path inside the microwave, caused by damp. Even though you might not be able to spot it with a multimeter, there's a low enough resistance at mains potential between live and earth to trip the breaker. Other favourites include toasters with bits of bread stuck between the wire guards and the element, and old washing machines where the inside of the motor is coated with carbon deposits from worn brushes.

Nigel Walker

How do you feel about those pink wafer "biscuits"? I'm certain they're not biscuits at all, but I'm not sure what they actually are.

Nigel Walker

Ok I have a question. I know how to turn AC to DC But how do you do the Reverse?

How did you come up with the idea for your famous Whoofler?

There is also videos titled" like a boss workers" or simply "boss workers" similar to machine but people doing repetitive tasks very efficiently.

Louboxington

have you watch any of the machine compilation videos on youtube where they show 30mins of all random clips of different manufacturing processes.

Louboxington

Are you a fan of riddles?

Louboxington

are there any words that you have come across that you have used for ever, however, suddenly have a realisation how its syllables describe its meaning?

Louboxington

can you show us how your standing work shelf is mounted on the wall?

Louboxington

havd you done much in regards to wood work ir metal work as far as making stuff?

Louboxington

When lightning strikes the ocean why don't all the fish die?

what household items do you like to keep a large stock of?

Louboxington

Howdy Big Clive. Have you ever experimented with gardening?

Louboxington

Clive ,can you do a video on how to refill and recharge the cheapo vapes , we have a load and don't want to bin them 😁❤️ Nat and Craig

Craig Groves

A motion-sensor activated LED spotlight mounted outdoors at the traditional eye level becomes so dim in cold weather (say -10 centigrade) that I can count the LEDs, some of which are completely dark. What happened to it?

All I know is that "If you do it the other way you do risk having babies"

Mr B Shepherd

Clive, could you please explain Impedance in your terms? I still struggle to understand what the hell it is

Do you buy tools because you simply want them and look for ways to use them afterwards?

horrovac

Nope just glad that you are well and back home (at least I hope )

Charles Bruckner

Clive, a question about soldering irons: I'm cheap and I have an old Craftsman (Sears) soldering iron with a totally ruined tip. I have looked for new tips but I can't seem to find any specifically for it. Wouldn't any tip with the right diameter shank (that would fit in the stem) work? Why don't they sell them labeled as to their measurements so you could just buy the right size?

Kyle

How do PIR detectors work and what is the common chip used to process the signals? Yes I could just Google it, but I've never needed to incorporate one into a design and so far so I haven't taken the time to find out!

electronbox

What could cause an RCD to trip, without the switch mechanism visibly moving itself? For context, we have a distribution board that's over 25 years old, and some of the RCDs (and the main breaker) are starting to trip when too much current is drawn for a while, but the switch levers stay in the "on" position. Also related, one of the RCDs usually trips during the winter months when we turn on the Microwave oven (which is rated under 1000w).

Any suggestions for a laser etcher/cutter for a beginner?

Kevin Hardisty

Hi Clive, what is the most difficult and frustrating reverse engineering project you've undertaken and what is the most ingenious, cleaver application that really impressed you and was better than what all the other makers of that or very similar products. Thanks.

Paul Amos

Clive, can you explain or demo how addressable LEDs work please? I could Google the answer, but would like a Clive explanation :)

PieFloater

In your work you have had to coil up hundreds of cable length. There has to be a trick. I coil up a 50 foot outdoor extension cord and then spend an hour untangling it for the next use. Would you consider doing a video on it?

RonNona

Out of all the projects you've shown on your channel, which do you still actually use?

SmithyScotland

Hi Clive. Big fan of your work and style. I would ask.. how would you go about building a laboratory power supply, with all bells and whistles, but with 230VAC output? I am very very scared of mains power and usually work with 12-30V only, but I'd really like to try building some mains supplied LED fixtures.

Moto G7 Plus by the way, so you probably have the same 3A charger. How does it even do that? Split battery into individual cells and charge in parallel, like 1A to each of 3 cells, but draw from battery would use the whole cell in series?

Vernon Zimmerman

How do phones and other devices decide how much current they can pull from a charger? I have a 3A one that "fast charges" my phone in less than an hour, but a generic one will say "slow charging" and I'm guessing that means 0.5A? If I'm using the phone with screen on, it's barely charging because the phone uses most of it. Is there some way to make a cord to trick phone/charger into higher current? What is limiting the current, phone or charger? Regardless, why even bother to limit it? Both devices would have their own limit regardless of what the other wants/provides.

Vernon Zimmerman

Dear Clive. Where do babies come from?

I find usb-c terribly difficult to clean, actually. The connector on my 2017 macbook is annoyingly touchy at this point (nothing as bad as the days of magsafe, mind -- great idea to build a magnetic port into a laptop so any random ferrous crud in your rucksack jams it up).

How about discussing ham radio? I know I keep banging on about it, but it's not all about the weather, medical conditions and how big your antenna is... You can experiment without talking to a soul!!! :) - Steve - 2E0PTY

Steve Brace

How about a chat around the positives and negatives of various portable heating sources - oil, ceramic, infrared, etc. Seems a pertinent subject just now as its bloomin freezing out.

Have you considered using your THERMAL CAMERA PHONE to casually see how many people walking in the street etc have a high temperature?

L. Brait

Any Christmas food left in your house? If so I think some 'cooking' with the electro forks is in order. There was a distinct lack of mince pies, Christmas cake, etc being cooked during the festive period!

USB connectors (Esp. USB-C) I find it amazing that those TINY CONTACTS can handle such HIGH CURRENTS. How the heck do they cope with pocket fluff etc without problems!

L. Brait

Not a technical question but I'll ask anyway ☺️ , Clive do you still enjoy your tea cakes we always have some during your streams ❤️ Craig & Nat

Craig Groves

Do you have a favorite CONFORMAL COATING for domestic circuit boards in dampish areas?

L. Brait

Is it possible to make a (UK) mains rated enclosure on a 3d printer and if so what filament should I use for this. it is for a led light project with a capasative dropped supply

Craig Matthews

Did you monitor your TEMPERATURE and BLOOD OXYGEN levels while you had Covid? Any of the frequently mentioned residual Covid artifacts? Any idea if you had Delta or Omicron?

L. Brait

Maybe discuss advantages / hazards of putting 2 LED MAINS LIGHTS IN SERIES instead of putting in a series capacitor to reduce stress on LEDs?

L. Brait

Masks with EXHAUST VALVES How weird is it to see people using dust masks that have valves to vent exhaled air without filtering (Designed to stop mask getting damp from exhaled air)

L. Brait

Masks and Beards I manage to get a REASONABLE SEAL around mid size beard after tying small knots in elastic. Bit hard on back of ears due to tight elastic though.

L. Brait

Any interesting arcade / pinball / jukebox bits to show?

Tokkan FX

Ever had much luck with DAB radio, I have found DAB radios a bit quirky and reception frequently a bit patchy (Sydney Australia)

L. Brait

I was really inspired by your video where you cooked a cake by applying a mains voltage directly across the cake mix. On the grounds the cake could be considered a potential divider, would it be possible to directly drive LEDs inserted into the cake surface? Perhaps if the LED's legs were separated the right amount such that the gradient voltage they bridge across the cake matches their forward voltage? To be honest, I think really, I just want to see LED cake. It's just a shame they don't make edible LEDs. They'd probably burn out too, thinking about it...

Godfrey Tables

Have you heard anything about Tim Hunkin recently? His last video was 5 months ago.

Seán Byrne

the food zapping forks

Jesse_Fish_45

When's the next proper build a project with Clive video. Have you ever thought about clearing all the piles of interesting Tec stuff you have collected, and start the again from scratch? Many Tec channels seem obsessed with perfect sound and vision. Some,it seems, spend hundreds if not thousands on cameras, mics and lighting, jazzy opening credits etc etc. Can you promise you'll always keep going your own way,

Neil Tonks

Any interest in doing arduino project, just my son got one for Christmas and I added a load of components so he has a great kit of stuff but doesn't know what to do. Most youtube videos are weak in tuition.

Pat Bell

That's real, LEDs are really peaky. I have no problem with them, if you are sensitive to that, you need to look for LEDs with a high CRI (Colour Rendering Index). Those have spectra that are close to natural light. They're also more expensive and less efficient, which is why they are not used as standard. Don't get them from China, if they are specced with high CRI, it's a lie.

horrovac

Can you explain how a semi resonant fluorescent light circuit actually strikes the tube? Despite looking online I've been unable to get my head around it. I remember from years ago such systems in operation. Upon switch on the fluorescent tube would glow dimly, gradually getting brighter over around 5 seconds until reaching full brightness. Their mode of operation has always fascinated me...

Godfrey Tables

How is your air purifier going? I've been cleaning a room today that I vape in and there is residue on a lot of surfaces.

Paul Hill

Do you have any recommendations or direction for someone wanting to get started with PCB design? Any resource you prefer, etc?

And fine wine?

Mike Page

Clive I have an old signal generator rescued from e scrap, the same as the one pictured here. https://images.app.goo.gl/ebPn7kvTTCchaUqA8 Would you like it to dismantle and reverse engineer or to use or both.

What are some of your current projects that you are working on?

What's the best way to get started with drawing circuit diagrams? I find it easy to picture wiring in my head but getting it down on paper is so much more difficult.

I second this led bonsai idea. I wasn’t sure such a thing exists

Efault

In fact the whole bayonet vs Edison thing, I live in US now and I’ve gotta say I prefer the Edison fitting. in fact, the more I think about it, the more bayonet just seems like a daft idea … but there must have been a reason.

Snorkers

And that way I think we could get smd resistors installed as well

Ady Hewitt

Yes, can you show your led bonsai tree from your website if you still have it, and can you tell us where to get the files from. The one i am referring to is: "Led Bonsai Tree." http://bigclive.com/bonsai.htm. I checked the LED flowers page, but can't find any board files. http://bigclive.com/flwr.htm

Eric Latour

How much do you work on your own vehicles? Oil change and filters?.... Brakes and exhaust, etc.... Would you attempt rebuilding an engine or transmission?

Scrufdog

Your opinion of EnaBot EBO-SE Monitoring Robot, please?

Andrew Donaldson

(aka VHS Bits) I find that under LED light bulbs my eyes seem to become fatigued and I have to strain to distinguish certain colours, whereas that's not the case for incandescent bulbs. I once saw an article that showed a graph representing the colour spectrum of LED vs CFL vs incandescent, and incandescent was that only one that covered the entire spectrum - the others were very "peaky". Do you think it's just psychological (because I read the article and know there is a difference) or do you think that LED lights might cause vision issues for some people?

Film Clive filming a video -- a fly on the wall documentary. Nice

Have you looked at EasyEDA yet ? You can set a project to "public" or keep it private, a super easy way for folk to order via JLCPCB or download the gerber to order elsewhere :)

Computer controlled lighting back in the 8bit era. Ever used BBCBasic to control lights?

Big Clive Cards against humanity....

Who is the "rockstar" of the industry - who do people in the trade all look up to?

Do you own a copy of "the art of electronics?". What is the most useful book on the trade?

Conductive putty and conductive inks - ever used them?

Using LEDs in reverse to generate voltage - thoughts / drawbacks?

When you die can we have all your stuff?

Mark Trombley

Why in the UK, we have excellent bayonet fitting lights and fixtures, but if I go to a shop I only see Edison bulbs????

Lorcán Adrain

I suggest it goes weird because some folks know trigger topics for you and others in the chat. Clever trolling starts rants or weirdness. Politics, Monarchy, bear trolling, kink boundaries/shaming/ trolling, and repeating questions from past streams (constant asking for links). You gotta wonder is there is a trolling drinking game sometimes. 1) Good design and bad design examples. (Over and beyond overdriving LED) 2) What you’ve enjoyed recently. 3) Essential Tools 4) Standby currents in PIR’s, Smart plugs, USB chargers - How we should be purchasing super efficient devices rather than 3w standby ones. 5) Holidays - What are you views on covid safe trips. 6) Wireless controls 7) z-wave etc.

Chris

Prepare a 10 minute presentation on the positive traits of the NICEIC. Take a shot of jager every time you deviate from the positivity.

Will there be cake?

Tim Albers

If you had to chose between a goat and a worm, which unexpected fury costume would you choose, and why?

Michael Gilchrest

How hard is it to pick back up a project that you've had to set aside for a while and how do you encourage yourself to continue with a project..

I would like to know what work looks like for tech people since the covid thing started. It’s been almost two years now, have people lost their jobs? is there plenty of (other) work? How has the covid19 affected tech people?

Liz Edwards

I don't think you've covered QI (wireless) charging. It'd be interesting to hear your thoughts, especially around static build up and lack of a path to earth

LibC

How did you discover YouTube for the first time back in time and when did you decide to start your own channel? Imagine you were able to write a letter to young Clive, what would it contain, what would you like to tell young Clive?

Elim Garak

Have you got any interesting fruit machines you can show us live on stream? How they operate, what Easter eggs it has, value, with the back off show dip switches and effect? Maybe a follow up video for the latter? Also, maybe prepare some polls to be done on the 45 past the hour mark (which video next, are the audience interested in X) and make it a feature like whoofle and toast time). Top 3 videos you watched this week?

Simon York

How do smartphone auto-tappers work without a human finger? (also asked before, lol.)

I'd love to hear your take on modular synths and eurorack modules. (Sorry, I've asked similar before, and this sort of steps on Look Mum No Computer's territory!)

What made you literally laugh out loud during the last week?

Elim Garak

tell us a story from, the/one of the, highlights of your career :)

Jesse_Fish_45

How about doing a few things to add something to talk about. Try a new MRE, electro fork a Christmas pudding, have a few votes on top 5’s, show us where you film your main videos or the pinball machine room. Something we haven’t seen before.

Have you seen Anton Petrovs recent video on the possible use of electrostatic charges for flying on the Moon or other bodies? https://youtu.be/X0uMe9S4Fbs Given your passion for ion streams, I thought this would be right up your street. :)

Gerry BVR

Ever done any "circuit bending" where you get a synth or radio circuit and hack about to get wierd sound effects?

Wim

If not to impertinent.... What is your (relation) status... Just out of intrest( just curious) ... And thanks for them nice streams...

Was there ever a video that you were recording that went so horribly wrong that you decided not to upload it? If so can we see it 😋

Wolfie RARAR

I'm a nuclear engineer, Clive. So I'd love to ask your opinion on nuclear power 🙂 Is the field of nuclear science and engineering something that interests you?

What is the most terrifying equipment you have worked on live with a real chance of serious injury or worse?
