Especially modern ones with a lot of active electronics.

Note that some modern vehicles may go through an engine characteristic re-learning period when driven after the battery has been disconnected and reconnected again.
Some really badly designed ECMs (Engine Control Modules) may even mess up when left unconnected for a while.
