High voltage fuse blowing

While I'm travelling there's going to be a burst of shorter videos I've prepared in advance to keep you entertained while I'm away from my normal bench.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0-9ivSyz9Y

Let's start with blowing a high voltage fuse and addressing a common magnetron myth.

High voltage fuse blowing

Comments

TV's, iPhone's, Windows OS ...them bugs get everywhere.

Phil in the kitchen

Most fuses have almost no resistance. The rest of the circuit the fuse is in is where the resistance comes from that requires the high voltage to run. When you remove the fuse from that circuit you can easily use 1.5v to blow the fuse.

Alex Taylor

Dambit there is a bug on my iPhone.

Alex Taylor

That was pretty cool!

Nani Isobel

That was interesting. Never seen a fuse quite like that may have to pull apart some of my transformers salvaged from microwaves. I always leave the magnatron in them as have obviously heeded them warnings. Not really sure I have a use case for a magnatron anyway though. :)

Broxie

Amazing - at 0.25 speed you sound like Billy Connolly!

Ymir the Frost Giant

Fun at .25 speed, too !

Phil Collins

Sorry for the stupid question but If I=V/R, how are you pumping 1A without high voltage if the resistance of the fuse is fixed. Again apologies if this is extra stupid.

I was just about to get up and get rid of the fly on my TV screen. I love it

Gary Bleads

Sharp commercial microwave ovens were the only oven i have seen that used a high voltage fuse , rated 5KV @.55 A about 2 inch long glass cartage with the spring to pull-back and stop arcing.

richard ockman

Modern domestic microwaves use an Aluminium oxide ceramic, older and comercial may well contan Berylium. Don't crush or break it the dust is very toxic and carcinogenic. Getting it in a cut is also not recomended.

Tokkan FX

Even when you change playback speed to x0.25 it's gone in a blink.

Phil in the kitchen

Over the years I have had a couple of microwaves suddenly stop providing any heating but with the light and turntable still continuing on at least one occasion there was a distinctive pop, I guess this was probably the high voltage fuse blowing.

Dr Andy Hill

A nice short video. Are going to cut it down and release it as a YouTube Short? An other piece of bait for clicks? ;)
