This is where a surge tester beats an AC flash tester. It's more like the real world and doesn't stress the component in the same way. DC testing is kinder to capacitors than AC, that's what I tend to use.

Mike Page

Class Y is used where failure could cause a shock. This one was much thinner than normal ones.

Big Clive

nvm. Googled ... Class Y (L -> G) fails open, Class X (L -> N) fails closed so that over-current protection pops. I think I understood that correctly!

Peter Laws

I see now that I posted to the wrong thread. :-D Class Y, I assume, should fail open like a fuse?

Peter Laws

I removed it. It had failed in a resistive state, which isn't great for a class Y capacitor. But I did exceed it's rated voltage by 100%.

Big Clive

They won't even know about it.

Big Clive

Super!

electronbox

Confused about the "safety" capacitor. I assume it is intended to fail beyond some point and it seems to have done just that but did it fail OPEN or fail CLOSED? Since the sparks kept on sparkin', I assume closed? (Which is bad)

Peter Laws

Just what I was hoping for, thanks Clive 🙏

Will the 'Manx Beard Club' be gate-crashing it?

Andrew Donaldson

Hooray, I'll finally be able to get to one for a decent amount of time. - Mister Meaargee.
