Well made work light

It's not perfect, there is one circuitry quirk that may affect the battery voltage sensing.  It just keeps flashing the last LED as if it's still charging when it is already fully charged.

But other than that, this Aldi light is pleasingly rugged.

With a full charge the COB will be running at the best part of 10W, so it may be preferable to run it at its lower intensity setting when the battery is freshly charged.  That will also give much longer run time.

And now mine seems to be failing, it's making very odd screeching noises when in use, not regular PWM but odd "not coping" sort of stuff.

Pretty sure I have this exact lamp, just rebranded as a "Craftsman" product. I'll have to check the circuitry.

Although as you say above Clive, the best optimization is to use the Medium setting.

They seem to be relying on the circuit resistance and tendency of LED voltage to float higher with increased current.

Hi again, I was in Aldi this afternoon, and they had six of these left, but no price on them, so took it to the checkout, and it was £7.99- been on Amazon, and the cheapest was £14.61- so I bought one from Aldi, because after Clive's review, I thought it has to be a good deal, and I can soon make an articulated arm for it so that it will affix to my Drill press or Bandsaw. But thanks for the info anyway. It's been on charge since 2:30 and is still drawing 260mA - supposed to charge for six hours befor first use, and as usual 3 yr warranty!

I have had one of these for a couple of years, the blue bumpers etc are yellow on mine. Interestingly mine has high, low, and flash settings. A good move for them to lose the flashing!

I've had it for a year and kept it fully charged and run it flat whenever I've use it, so I imagine there's been some normal degradation of the batteries.

I wonder if the battery is faulty or much lower capacity. The one Clive reviewed here has a 4.4Ah battery, so based on Clive's current measurements at 11:15, it should provide about 2 hours on high (2.3A) and over 4 hours on low (1A).

Next time I'm in the loft I'll take a look. It's currently stuck on a steel tie pointed at the boiler!

Aldi (Australia) did the higher power version of these. Has a high CRI chip according to the product desc and it does seem rather adept however it does have some colour shift on the lower intensity, which is a hallmark of high frequency PWM hence most use a lower frequency and strobe. Mine does fully go solid at the end, but it takes 8-hours to top-up from 3-4 leds which may be why yours never stops?? I don't like how soft the button is either, I use it for a fill-in for photography and it's activated a couple of times.

Anton

The American version has 3 intensity levels, four LED charging status indicators and a square COB - it is incredibly bright. 6600mah and 20 watts according to the sticker. It's a great light.

Excellent suggestion. I think I might just do that. I strongly suspect that they are driving that cree array a little too hard!

Mark Warburton

Keep in mind that the option is there to swap out those zero ohm links for resistors to fine tune the output and run-time to your liking.

Big Clive

Would that be the JML one? as I had one of those, but the magnet was poor, and it wouldn't stick very easily.

Mike Hughes

might have to grab one of those if they turn up at Aldi here.

Kate Cole

The Asda work lights (totally different form factor, more like a wand) have a magnet on the back. Works well.

This was very interesting Clive because I bought one about a year ago. It's rugged and very bright, but it also consumes a lot of power, so not great for operating >30 minutes on high beam or >1 hour on low beam. It's also way too easy to turn it on while it's facing you and it happily burns a purple ghost into your retina for a while, even on low beam.

Mark Warburton

That would be ideal for my Drill Press and Bandsaw if I added a means of adjustable attachment to it. Must get one to try it out. Great Review Clive.
