I did a proper experiment

To see if a standard zinc air cell works as a gas generator I put one up against the cell from an air freshener to see how they compared.

Very interesting results.

Right, that's me done with the zinc-air hydrogen experiments.  Back to normal content.

You could make a time delay switch with a micro switch mounded to be actuated by the syringe plunger..... Not for any nefarious use obviously lol. I was just wondering how easy it would be to calibrate??

The sort of activity designed for the damned in hell.

The Yihua style units seem to go under many different brands. I've noticed that some prominent sellers like CPC in the UK have similar units that are probably made to higher standards to comply with local regulations.

You would appear to have had better luck with Yihua than I did. For anyone else looking at a hot air station from Yihua, I bought the 8509 model just a few months ago. First one came with problems: it would power up, but as soon as it turned the air pump on, it would just die - screen went dark, requires a power cycle to get it to come back, rinse and repeat. They sent a replacement. That one had different problems; the auto-cooldown feature didn't work because the nozzle stand was missing the NIB magnet that was supposed to be in there -- the hot-snot glue blob was there, but the magnet just wasn't under it. I took the first one apart and found a couple of problems, including a wire that had been squeezed under a panel and shorted out, plus some other minor thing. Between the two, I cobbled together one working unit - which then died when I turned it on yesterday. Total usage I got out of it was less than two hours. I suggested to Yihua that they had a quality-control problem. They said "Yes, we know" but not that they were doing anything about it...

They do use Helium to detect leaks in vacuum tubes/systems. I presume that is also because of the small size of the He molecule/atom. Great experiment, surprising to see how much gas is actually generated.

So the big question remaining is: how many Zinc-Air hearing aid cells would we need to fill the Hindenberg? My back of the envelope calculation is that the Hindenberg needed 211890 cubic metres of hydrogen. You're getting around 100ml of H2 from a single cell. A cubic metre is 1000000ml. So I reckon you'd need 211890 x (1000000/100) = 2118900000 cells. Hmm... 2.1 billion cells... imagine having to tape a resistor to each of those.... :-)

It's part of the Yihua 8786D soldering station I use for most of my soldering.

Very interesting indeed! Whatever you do, don't try to commit any sort of crime with the melted syringes, they have your fingerprints on them!

Fantastic experiment - quick question, what heat gun do you use?

Rik Kershaw-Moore

Very interesting- there must be lots of uses for this process.

Great video, more experiments like this are welcomed!

This will be interesting to watch i will watch it tomorrow
