Inside a Space Flower

We have some unusually retro lights on the job.  This one was delivered with an unusual pan fault which may have been caused by a repair attempt in the past.

This light uses a 3kW xenon projection lamp to shoot a mass of rotating and morphing beams of light into the sky.  It requires Civil Aviation Authority approval to use.

His voice is less ... carbonated ... when at work ...

When I go into work-mode things seem to accelerate a bit.

Halogen and discharge lamps are usually under vacuum. The Xenon lamps are under high internal pressure. Face and body protection is advised when changing them.

Big Clive

That is a serious lamp. It must have taken some courage to design and to produce the first ones. As for testing and dry runs... I bet there were a few knocks on doors! Is it just me or is your accent settling down into a more natural local dialect? I can hear a lot more Glaswegian than before, especially with vowels, although overall it's still very gentle and dripping in honey. It's understandable - I spent 3 years in Brum a long time ago; when I went back to London everyone thought I was a Brummie because I had picked up the accent.

We always had to wear gloves and use alcohol to clean fingerprints when changing them because the oil would cause them to shatter or explode.

I worked in TV for a decade. I remember a few 5K studio lamps exploding (Halogen) and it shook the studio crew and talent. There were always (by code) screens that would contain molten glass. Were xenons much different than those quartz 3200K bulbs? Assuming just a different gas.

Dave Frederick

The xenon lamps are extra impressive because of the way they fail. They are under pressure internally and can explode forcibly.

Big Clive

Geeze Big Clive. I think you could fix ANYTHING! Very cool. The light source itself seems kind of impressive.

Dave Frederick

Shoot I thought it was going to be autopsy of Audrey (little shop of horrors) or maybe worse Barbarella - sort of a sixties space flower :) But this is much better. THanks

Thanks for showing!! I'd love to see more lights! New or old I don't care
