I think I have a big mains-rated cap at work with 4mm terminals. I might try that and report back.

I almost had a smart meter fitted at my Glasgow flat, but the guy turned up on a Friday to fit it and was clearly just wanting an early weekend, so decided he couldn't do it. I was planning on testing it with a very high capacitive load to see how it registered.

Thanks Dr Clive, I always miss these because of timezone differences & work. But listen to them in the evening while messing around with technical things.

Cheers for that Seán. That is more or less what I'm afraid of. Once committed you can't go back. I need to do some hard thinking.

So far it appears to be reading the same as the old mechanical meter (which was 40 years old), however as we've only had it 8 days and we were away on Easter Sunday, we'll see after a few weeks. They installed ours while I was away. I only noticed something odd when I returned home and my PC's UPS software reported a 10 minute outage just after 1pm. Having recently received a letter that smart meters are being rolled out in our area I checked the meter and sure enough it was changed.
I do know my sister's smart meter in the UK over reads on LED bulbs as hers has the in-home display which ESB Networks in Ireland don't provide. When I was visiting her house, I noticed turning on/off a nearby light with 4 x 3.5W GU10 LEDs (14W total) would cause the display to climb/drop by about 50 watts. The live wattage appears to be a 30 second average. It'll be tricky to test our smart meter as the display doesn't show any live reading other than the 1 red flash per 1/1000kWh, but I'll certainly test on a quiet day as we have a lot of GU10 LEDs in our house.

A third way to tell if Calcium Nitrite soaked rags can spontaneously would be to do an experiment. Given that fire is potentially involved, perhaps it's something Liz Edwards would experiment with.

Is it reading higher than the mechanical one? They are threatening me with one soon so I want to know if I should tell them to FO

We got our smart meter installed a week ago (ESB Networks Ireland) and it indeed meters apparent power, although domestic customers are not charged for this (yet). In the past week it counted 114kWh active, 25 negative kvarh and 0 positive kvarh units.
