In loving memory of the fluorescent tube....

Maybe I should have had a rant in this video.  The Eurocrats are banning fluorescent tubes this year, but have seemingly turned a blind eye to the LED lamps that are made to fail and the fixtures where you can't even change a lamp any more.

This little module is a classic unit from a signage application.  It's about as simple as it gets.  I will concede that the good quality LED strings are perfect for signage illumination.  They are simple, very versatile and safe.

Did you mention that as well as a carrier gas, fluerescent tubes contain mercury (did I miss that). That's one reason it'll be good to see them go. But, the main reason for me is the huge waste in the electronic ballasts, which all goes to landfill when a lamp fails. I know early LED lamps were similarly complex (compared to the new linear regulated ones). With the original 2D CFLs, one could replace just the tube when it failed and the ballast would basically last forever.

I have zero CFLs in my home. I don't think I've even bought any in my lifetime. I've always bought either incandescent lights, or LED lights once they hit mass adoption/affordable status.
