High voltage lamp ignitor module

Quite an interesting module, and also quite complex to design.

In hindsight the snubber and unusually large resistor are probably to deal with the high voltage pulse that the module effectively gets from the ballast output.

It has to protect itself against that high voltage spike without attenuating it too much.

I just use butane to ignite my lamps.

Thank you - that's some useful info. I shall investigate the strangely anonymous device labelled Q1 near them!

If they're the sense resistors (connected between the transistor and negative rail). If they are it may point at failure of the main transistor.

I love these tear downs. What would be really interesting was a video showing how you do the PCB -> schematic with the coloured dots. I'm about to embark on something similar with a Mountfield Li-Ion garden tool charger that has a big sooty mark where some large SMD resistors used to be.... :-)

I saw "High voltage lamp ignitor module" ..... too good to be true, Clive plays with Coleman lanterns.. but alas.. Somewhere on my equally cluttered desk, I ha the remains of a Coleman HV lamp ignitor.. still has enough pixies in it to make you jump..!

All the girls run from my big fat juicy resistor... as well they should.
