Basic air cleaner teardown

I got this on eBay as one of the very classic "loved it until we discovered what a new filter costs" listings.   It turns out that you can get the entire unit for the same cost as a replacement filter!  Major price gouging going on.  And the filter is small and basic too.  The sort you'd expect to cost a quarter of the price.

Good news for us though, as we get to explore a unit with minimal active electronics.

Yeah, I keep making that mistake.

There's a direct link between levels of ozone and ambient pollution. The generation of natural ozone seems to react to impurities in the air by ramping up its level. The real problem is the pollution that is triggering the ozone increase. These "ionizer" modules are designed to produce trace levels of active air molecules that are below natural outdoor levels. Molecules like ozone get depleted quickly indoors due to the lack of replenishment of outdoor air to replace them.

Not carbon fibre but carbon impregnated material in the filter.

I agree that the anti-ozone crowd have been drinking too much of the koolaid. However, research has suggested that exposure to ozone can exacerbate pre-existing respiratory conditions like asthma. Ozone can cause inflammation and damage to the airways, which could potentially lead to the exacerbation of asthma symptoms, especially during periods of high ozone levels, such as in a lightning storm. A respiratory death rate of 1.13% in a concentration of 10-μg/m^3 ozone compared to the mean increase of 0.33% in total mortality during Summer has been reported (https://journals.lww.com/epidem/Fulltext/2005/07000/Associations_Between_Ozone_and_Daily_Mortality_.2.aspx). The difficulty with some ozone generators is that, depending on the lack of airflow, pockets of concentrated ozone can build up, sufficient to induce an asthma attack in the susceptible. As with all of these things, a common-sense approach to the use of ozone generators must be used. Don't use ones which increase levels to 10 ppb or greater. Also, use them in well-ventilated areas so pockets of more concentrated ozone can't easily form.

Same thing happened with my Avalon tabletop water dispenser. Replacement filters are like 100$... Thankfully there's no stupid filter DRM so I'm just gonna find another filter set and plumb them where the avalon filters are.

Putting the ionizer in the air stream before a prefilter and the HEPA/Carbon unit will improve the capture rate, Prolong HEPA life, and reduce dirt clinging to walls. A grounded aluminum mesh filter as found on many vent hoods is ideal for the prefilter.

Yeah, they did put out quite a lot in the past, but in that era offices had many other issues too. There's always been this anti-ioniser thing going on. I'm wondering if it was motivated by marketing companies selling traditional air filter units.

its not funny anymore when you explain the joke

Those suggestions are weighted by where you live and what Google knows about your current session with them (even if you don't have an account, they profile you). I get model trains, Australian and New Zealand engineering projects, and electrical safety videos.

Damaged

The fan blows and the filter sucks.

youtubes algorithms first suggestion on this latest video was these additional dangerous products -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wlh6yFSJEms fitting?

The idea that ozone is harmful may have come from the time when (some) photocopy machines put out high levels of ozone when they were printing.
