Near unity power factor LED driver

This video is a bit deep and may only appeal to the true geeks. It's a cheap AliExpress power supply module with some circuitry that is not actually even mentioned on the chip manufacturers datasheet.

The way the snubber network also delivers power to the chip is quite clever.

Near unity power factor LED driver

Pretty cool. Thanks Big Clive. It seemed a little flickery on camera so I'm guessing this is not the type of power supply you used to replace your bench light. Would adding a larger cap on the output help that?

Dave Frederick AKA @amorphuc

The current is drawn evenly across the whole sinewave in a series of pulses, as opposed to the usual circuitry where it is all drawn at the peak of the sinewave as it charges the usual capacitor.

Big Clive

Thanks for the analysis. What about this circuit gives it the high power factor?

First, tolerance and now unity? What is happening here?
